- Following the loss of their mother, Elise and Johnathan struggle to make ends meet, the challenge compounded by Johnathan's gambling and alcohol addictions. Elise has an upcoming trip to Canberra with her social support group to forward to but Johnathan refuses to let her go, attributing the cause of his problems to her disability. We learn that Elise is actually more independent and mature than Johnathan gives her credit, being able to manage taxes and cleaning up after her messy brother. Despite her attempts to improve their relationship, Johnathan refuses to acknowledge her independence. Elise talks to her support worker Mindy, who believes his problems are due to his grief, however Elise is unsure. Tempers and emotions come to a boiling point when Elise takes matters into her own hands, and pours Johnathan's beer down the drain, Johnathan threatens to destroy a porcelain doll left to Elise, but realises he is in the wrong. The two learn to live together, with Johnathan eventually deciding not just to let her go on the trip, but to accompany her.
