Old (2021)
Important Message Overshadowed By Lines That Shouldn't Have Been Crossed
There could have been a great message here about how life is short, and arguments that divide us cease to matter in the end. But it lost all moral highground as soon as we got hints of what was to be the result of the kid's ageing. And what a lazy attempt at trying to justify its presence.
We get a very weak, momentary implication that their mind has matured along with their bodies. While there may be a degree of that in a person's physical and chemical development, the fact remains (and is demonstrated in the plot!) they're still children inside. They don't have the neccesary life experiences and education to make the sexualisation of these characters remotely ok. Most disturbingly the youngest girl, depicted as under the age of 4.
Even another fumbling lie to the viewer that she could have somehow consented wasn't bothered with. Throw in the dead baby and I was done being interested in anything else this movie had to say. It's only saving grace is the acting. A huge low for the director that shouldn't quickly be forgiven.
Elvis (2022)
Putting the Art in Artistic Licence
I went in knowing very little about Elvis, aside from the well-circulated high and lowlights of his life. I don't believe I've come out of this experience any better informed, but still enriched from the cinematic experience.
I took 2 stars off due almost parody-esque glossover of Elvis' penchant for underage girls. We all know it, but, if you can put that unsavoury fact aside Luhrmann crafts true movie magic. Bringing fairytale glitter even to the dark and dirty, down to the last details.
Its worth watching just for the modern, but still respectful, twist on Elvis' music for the soundtrack.
Vox Lux (2018)
Genius or Terrible? I still don't know.
This had all the makings of a brilliant art movie, but goes right off the deep end in places. In an attempt to be "real", it's often confusing and switched between dull and harsh. It's absolutely worth watching and I'm glad I did, just don't put too much weight in it's own merit because it sure doesn't.
The Stranger (2020)
More Loose Ends Than A Shoelace Factory
I loved this series immensely, up until the last episode where everything fell apart like a pyramid of cooked spagetti.
- What happened to Olivia, now that her father is in prison for 3 murders? Is she just left with her mother who's done a DeeDee Blanchard on her?
- It was a nice attempt to gloss over the fact that Killane's son is now his daughter, make her gender transition just a fact of life without it being a big deal. Unfortunately this was just confusing.
- Why did Adam's father's law firm have all of Killane's belongings instead of the police? He killed his wife, they would have confiscated everything.
And the biggest of all; the kids and the drugs. Multiple teen characters had ongoing side effects days/weeks after the rave. This was initially presented as part of the plot, inplying more than just Mike had been spiked in some way. But then..nothing. And we still don't know what happened to Dante.
RIP Louis the Llama, and my hopes for this series.
Collateral Beauty (2016)
Did we see the same movie?
I can distinctly recall when this came out, that every newspaper, critic and everybody's mother was calling this the worst film ever.
Sure, it has a couple of rough edges. But I've watched this twice and will probably want to again. Great xmas movie, suspend your snobbery and give it a chance.
Alias Grace (2017)
Amazing series, but not for Emetophobes!
As this is rarely taken seriously as a content warning I feel it necessary to warn other people: As much as I'm enjoying it so far, the vomiting is bordering on gratuitous. Overexagerrated, frequent and the most unsettling sound effects I've ever heard used in a non-comedic setting.
I'm sure plenty of people will roll their eyes or laugh at this but heads up for who might want to know anyway.
Apostle (2018)
Missed Potential But Still Great
There are so many brilliant elements to this film, it could have been amazing but it failed trying to combine the supernatural element with the human one. Giving more focus on former would have stopped them both ending up a bit weak on all counts. Maybe this is what leads the plot to be a bit of a jumbled mess in places.
Nevertheless it's still enjoyable, a must see if you loved The VVitch but not for the squeamish.
