Aquaman (2018)
Spectacular - Like Nothing Before
This film has got to be one of the most unique superhero films ever created. I loved every minute. A quarter of the way through and I was already in love. The visuals, the performances, the story, and all of the heroic moments in this film makes it a must see. The underwater scenes, especially the fight scenes, are just beautiful. If you were looking for an amazing superhero film to see this year, this is definitely the one.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
Wondrous
As a huge fan of the first Fantastic Beasts film, I had been looking forward to this film for a while. I'm so glad that it didn't disappoint! I really enjoyed this movie, just as much as the first installment. Of course, it is a bit different, and it gets down to serious business, so the tone is a bit darker. Which of course makes sense. There was still enough humor though, and I love the characters. The storyline is great, the villain is interesting, the special effects were amazing, and the history and lore for the Harry Potter series is rich and enjoyable. Although this movie is pretty amazing, it did suffer from trying to feed us a lot of information and history. Yeah, there is a lot to take in, and a lot you find out. Perhaps this movie could've been a bit longer too as some extra scenes between some characters would've been appreciated. But with all of the information and history that was given, I found it all to be pretty exciting. I definitely feel as if this is a definite must see for any Harry Potter fan.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Better Than Past MCU Films, But Still Has Almost the Same Formula
Avengers: Infinity War comes after a long line of previous Marvel films, and some would say that the same old formula is getting pretty exhausting. Infinity War definitely has a lot of the same formula, and still plays it safe at times, but it is definitely a step up from a lot of the previous films. Doesn't say as much as Black Panther, but still has some philosophical moments. This film also has a villain a tad more interesting than most of the bland MCU films in previous entries, and we get to understand a bit more of how he thinks. He is a bit more complex than most of the previous villains, and that is refreshing. Avengers: Infinity War was a pretty good film, not amazing, but a decent enough Marvel film in a time when its formula has been getting pretty tiring.
Justice League (2017)
A Very Decent Movie
Like most DC movies, this film has been getting a lot of hate from critics. The funny thing is, the complaints it is getting are some of the same exact things you see in other films of this genre, but for some reason those films get a pass. The cgi is actually pretty good, and just as great as the other popular superhero films you have seen. This villain is pretty generic though, which can be frustrating. He is just there to set up even more of the universe and provide a glimpse of the new gods. So he was effective in that sense. He is just like a normal superhero villain though (like a regular one you see in the MCU). Honestly, this movie is very similar to other team up superhero films, and should probably get the same scores as those films, but for some weird reason it isn't. The characters were great, every single one. The humor can be a bit much at times, but I found myself laughing a few times. There was quite a bit of fun action too.
Unfortunately the movie is too short. WB wanted to cut down this film by a lot, and it shows. Most scenes feel like there was probably originally more to them, so hopefully we get an extended cut for Justice League as it definitely needs one. The soundtrack is also pretty generic, but I guess that's what you get when you get rid of Hans and Junkie XL. Danny Elfman scored a pretty bland, generic, un-epic soundtrack for Justice League, and that is really disappointing. Even though this movie had some obvious flaws, there weren't more than most superhero movies that have come out (and for some weird reason get a ton of praise). So I say watch this film. It's definitely worth the watch, and is quite entertaining. And I can promise you that each hero is, well, pretty heroic and definitely fun.
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Better than Age of Ultron, But Not What I Was Expecting
In a year with quite a few Superhero movies coming out, I'm surprised to see that this movie gets all the love. I went in the movie theater expecting so much, and came out feeling disappointed. Although I do believe this movie is better than Age of Ultron (that one was pretty terrible), Captain America: Civil War was not much better. I'm starting to feel that Marvel can't do anything different. These movies don't take risks (like the comics actually do), and they still don't have a great villain in this film. Marvel in general just has terrible villains, and Zemo in this film was no exception. There was nothing villainous about him, and he was just so bland. The fight scenes were okay, but not as epic as they could've been. This movie was so hyped, and all I heard was that it was so amazing, and that it is the best comic book movie ever, but after seeing the film I know that isn't true. Marvel movies are starting to get stale, and uninteresting. Also, why isn't this called Avengers: Civil War? There is no way this movie can be a Captain America movie. It seems like the people at Marvel are just trying to sell Captain America, because I cannot see how they could even call this Captain America: Civil War. At least Spiderman was cool, but he had a very tiny part, smaller than I expected. He was one of the main guys in the comics, but not in this film. But as we all know, Marvel doesn't stay true to the source material, and in this movie's case, that is very true. This didn't even have the same storyline as the comics!
Overall, this movie was just okay. I found that it had slow pacing, which made it kind of boring, and had characters making illogical decisions (especially from Zemo). To me, this is definitely not the best superhero movie ever, or even of the year. I hope that the MCU can release films that actually have more substance, and with better villains. I don't know how much longer I can take the Marvel formula. Their next movie has got to be different, otherwise I may not ever go see their films again.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Definitely a Movie for the Fans
I have seen this movie twice within it's opening weekend, and I can honestly tell you that I have no idea why there is so much hate for this movie from the critics. Sure it's got flaws, like every movie (I have never given a movie a 10), but I do not think it's as flawed as people say.
This movie is full of comic book content. It effectively combines more than one story from the comics, and if you have read the comics, you can point out what was taken from the comics. In fact, there are some lines that are exactly the same from the comics. I was really impressed.
I've heard the pacing was bad from other people, but I don't think it really is. The pacing is always setting up something later in the movie, or trying to get you to think. There were questions presented in the film that really made you ponder. The action was awesome, but it wasn't just pure action (like some people thought Man of Steel was). All the actors and actresses did such a great job with their part, and I loved seeing the brutal Batman that we haven't seen much of over the years.
Unfortunately I do have a couple of complaints. What it comes down to mostly is that if you don't know the comics, then scenes from the movie might confuse you, and may seem random. They're actually not if you knew the stories. This is why I say this movie is for the fans. Maybe the critics don't know the comics, so thought the movie was a mess when it really isn't? I dunno. But I know for sure some people have been confused because they don't know the comics. Yes the writers should have made it so that even people who aren't fans of the comics would understand, but they didn't. This has made people think the movie is a tad confusing, and made it so that I have had to explain to a lot of people what was going on. But other than that, I really don't have much to complain about. It's what comic book fans would want to see in a movie based off some of their favorite comic book characters, and I was very pleased with what I saw.
Overall, this movie is quite good, and really enjoyable. I don't quite understand all the hate, and I hope people don't let the critics think for them, and actually go see the movie to form their own opinion. Critics are there to help people in some ways, but a lot of the time they are not correct, and the audience thinks the opposite of what they do. So give this movie a chance, and maybe you'll like it just as much as me.
