Come Sunday (2018)
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE TYRANNIZED BY FAITH.
Only a person that is born in a country (Italy) where, at the time, you had no choice or saying in what to believe, can fully understand this movie. Unfortunately the screenplay is a mess, and the director is not doing justice to an oscar worthy performance by Chiwetel Ejiofor, (this men is on another level), Lakeith Stanfield and Danny Glover. STILL, they are able to absorb you into the Via Crucix of not only pastor Pearson, but of those who clinged to his words in hope of salvation and are suddenly casted into chaos instead. This was a very courageous movie to produce BUT (like I did in Italy to break the chains by showing up to my confimation with short hair, bright green lima pants and matching pullover) sometimes you need to use firerworks to be seen. This movies FAILED to emphatized the magnitude and enormity of an African American pastor standing up against these "corporate", ANCIENT, religious organizations. Best part of the movie are the dialogue about being born gay and not going to hell, and the speech at the end in this new Hope church: because after all those years of Cathechism, the only thing I'm certain about the Bible is that Jesus is LOVE. He even wrote it in his scroll. It's just that fear it's a much easier feeling to handle.
The Rape of Recy Taylor (2017)
Too bleached to be real.
I agree that we do need more of these movies, but this one miss the point. Maybe I am wrong, but as a white woman I strongly believe that is ESSENTIAL that these movies should be made ENTIRELY by black people. The movies is confusing, jumping from the story of Recy Taylor, to the autobiography of Rosa Park, which is already a well-known pillar of the African American right movements. The continuous jumping back and forth in between Rosa and Recy takes away from the horror, and we need to UNDERSTAND AND BELIEVE the horror. Also, the story is about a woman and HER FAMILY victimized both physically and mentally by the Justice system. It's too much to take in, to hear the tearing stories of the rapists' relatives describing them as just kids fooling around, or even worse war vet with purple hearts. It's also unacceptable to hear a white woman (despite how much she wants to help) saying that the Civil Right Movement "abandoned" Recy after the Second Grand Jury fail to convict. What was excruciating and marvelously done, was the agony and complete sense of despair her father suffered. It almost reflected the saying: when there's no hope , there's nothing.
Paterno (2018)
MAGNIFICENT
Two roles really will defy Al Pacino: Scarface and Paterno. Polar opposite, vaste age gap, yet perfect timing for both. In this one, I cannot express how good both him and director Barry Levinson come together and create a sensation that is like nothing short of diving into the slippery mind of an old man, passionate about football so much so that he is willing to sacrifice even his own principles for it, nevertherless entitled and arrogant till the end. At times, with the help of a great editing, and the fresh acting of Riley Keought, you almost want to feel a hint of pity for Paterno, but then the amazing acting of Pacino brings you back to reality with perfect placed "bullets" in the screenplay that remind you he knew all along and he just "justified it for the greater good: Penn State and his name".
Jiao zhu zhuan (2017)
CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM PLEASE.
First off: a movie is a story (sometime fictional, sometimes not) that becomes virtual reality due to: 1) great cinematography 2) excellent script 3) good acting 4) CASTING choices. This movie falls into FANTASY, so you are not judging their government or their censorship. As far as special effects: they are not good, or even close to perfect, but terrible? I work with computers all the time. My 13 years old nephew can spot the smallest oversight. Still they are not making the movie "unwatchable". The acting overall is good, but taiwanese actor Darren Wang is EXCELLENT. The casting is flawless and the 3 main characters mesh together brilliantly. Finally, the screenplay. I would have give them 7 stars, if it wasn't for the special effect. What a pleasure to laugh like that ! Only Guardian of the Galaxy 2 has a better screenplay in terms of laughs. Also, I gave the an extra star because THIS MOVIE HAS NO GUNS, EXPLOSIONS, OR ACTION like we are used to. So, to me, it's a plus.
