Planet of the Humans (2019)
uninformed and badly researched
First: Coal energy would simply not be profitable any more in the US if it weren't subsidized and rammed down our throats by president 45 and his mobster cronies. In the year of 2012, the coal industry was fighting for survival, and the picture hasn't become rosier for them despite help from a cast of corrupt Republicans in D.C. Renewable energy (wind and solar, that is, not biomass) has become an incredibly cheap, reliable and morally superior energy source.
This film is full of strawmen and misleading "gotcha" moments. For those who are familiar with the actual facts on renewable energy, these moments only expose the lack of research (or are they intentional efforts to mislead?) on the side of the production team. The problem is that in our cynical age, this film might sway the less informed to wrongly believe that there is "no alternative" to coal, oil and gas.
I always thought Michael Moore is little overrated as a director. But I would have never expected him to produce a film this uninformed, misleading and badly researched. In a country that incentivises and values self-promotion like no other (just look at who had been elected president), this is another one of those movies where the producers are in it for their themselves.
Who Killed Malcolm X? (2019)
truly fascinating documentary
I binge-watched the 6 episodes of this documentary series. This is a truly fascinating series which features lively and groundbraking material on the murder of Malcolm X. The director speaks to a large number of witnesses, many of which are interesting personalities, and uncovers in all detail how Malcolm X - an immensely inspiring and impressive man, who told the truth to power - got murdered by members of the Nation of Islam. The FBI and NYPD play an obscure part in all this. Without their complicity, Malcolm X could not have been killed. The documentary shows that it is obvious that the state was complicit in Malcolm X's murder via represenatives of these organizations who saw a threat in him. Everyone should see this film. Kudos to the director for his idealism and for dedicating so much time to uncovering the truth.
