Mal de ojo (2022)
ths is a must...
See production, if you like the mexican language , culture and folklore. Sometimes folkloristic horror movies becomes too oversymbolized and complex, but these filmakers have made a great balanced product, and a perfectly presented narrative, great plotspeed and intense fear all over the fiddle...
the cast delivers the best ive seen from mexican feature horror movies, i do hope the kids saw just a green or blue screen when acting, cause there are many frightening scenes involving them. Also the musical score needs an acclaim, its merely calm, but when stuff gets hot the trombone sounds are just eeringly chilling. Theyve also succeded a lot on the choice of locations, set decorations(utterly detailed) and the special effects are REAL.
So follow my advice, nevertheless im a grumpy or not old man, if you wanna suckle in your sleep this may be a good place to start. 10 stars awarded.
Candy Land (2022)
not a barbie
Fairytail from the candy land that you might imagine, and i do for god sake not hope this come under the genre of x-mas movies, as the plot happens in those happy days of joy, and the musical score jingle all around. Its the cloaked businesses that happens to take place in every trucking pit stop or major rest areas at the vast interstate road system of america.
Its a raw and consiousless story about them sexworkers that hangs on to the trade of giving pleasure in the humongous cabins that american rigs are equipped with, until kingdome come, and the great cleansing begins.its right here youre introduced to the environment, presented in such a heartless chilly way that you wont forget...
Well it was not the sexual, erotic joyride you paid for, and its absolutely not a childfriendly piece of action, other than some overgrossed gory absolutionatory moves, if that knife is still sharp i doupt, an uncomfy view for a grumpy old man. Its a shocker for sure, and the cast are really going all in, so a little recommend.
Alkhallat+ (2022)
this was...
A surprise, an anthology from the arabian peninsula that easily will be lined up among the best in this kind of genre. And believe it or not , this is real mockery with the arabian culture en masse'
its attacking issues like infidelity, alcohol consumption, the wealthy rich, and most of all religious rites. Its not that i have knowledge of arabian life and culture firsthand, but i do from my education and a long life lived that this netflix production would be hard to swallow for many in the muslim world...
they have made a good product of tales of the unexpected clung together with nice musical score, and an amazingly nice float from story to story. The acts are full of gesticulating and enhanced use of nonverbal signs and language, and with a maincast delivering like this, their next product should be all pantomimic , like the films ''the bra '' or ''a man with a hat'', cause they are hilarious at its best.
So if youre a novise to the cinematic landscape of the arabic world, then this will be a good place to start. Alkhallat+ is a recommend from the grumpy old man.
Die Schwarze Spinne (2022)
the black spider...
Woman, or the whench or witch or die hexe as the germans would gennant it comes to life in this swiss/hungarian +++ dramatization based on the novel written in the 18th century by. Swiss writer jeremias gotthelf.
Follows the life in a village in the 13th century, where superstition and religious mass psychosis were part of daily living. So when the midwife of the village makes a pact in secreto with the devil to save her kins, the heads will fall over heels and bonfires will be lit.
A well acted, visual marvel of good european styled filmaking may be rewarded in tenfolds of the production costs, its very close to the novel and very few deviations has been made in the plot. Therefore the choice of locations and great scenery combined with very well embalmed vfx do catch my attention.
Therefore a recommend from the grumpy old man.
All Eyes (2022)
a rare now and then...
You might stumble over a film like this, its really on rare occations, and usually when the mainstream hollywood market has dried up a bit. A film thats made on a dime or two, the efforts of some screwed together minds (writer and director), all highly independent like the declaration in the 1770's, about the land of the free (thinking???) and the home of the brave(hardened???)...
its a horror comedy that is for sure, and you might need to be on the makers intellectual level to enjoy, or just having that day for rumping around, but well made it is, and well acted it is, the mr don actor plays that caracter so darn well, that i might watch it over again...
but from one joik to another yoke...consider this analogy... in which red light district would you like to go... cuddled into the bottomless boobie trap in reperbahn , hamburg, or to dons farm boobie traps somewhere dickens, oklahoma ?
Well follow the advisory given by the grumpy old man and join the podrace of a broadcast of monstrous porportions, cause there will be blood nevertheless.
Heon-teu (2022)
an intense...
True life happening spymovie, about the fight for power among the intelligence organizations of the dictator led regime of south korea in the early 1980's. North koreans do always play a part when issues of the interior political landscape of south korea occurs.
To get full pot on understanding the menace of the plot and its historical strata, read yourself up on this countrys political history, because this film is so intense and complex plotwise, with an extremely act actionbase, and a filofax full of names that are important to know for the benefit of enjoying the show...
ive said it before, and repeat it again...south korean actors are hard to differ, them look like a swarm of clones at the hottest moments, but korean actors do really know the acts. An impressive and suggestive musical score draws a double line under its speed and tension, so if you may connect with its kin then its a recommend from the grumpy old man.
Sorry About the Demon (2022)
its a witty spirituell...
Ghost comedy en masse', with walking , talking demons in a young lonely loveblaced man, who in an effort to become an adult in his ex-girlfriends eyes, buys a house in a hurry falling over rubble and sticks by a family full of fear due to demonish tendencies and drafts in their EMP'ded house. How much he paid aint said, but the demonbuddies didnt flee the house along with the perrishing family.
So the young man takes on the battle of the grounds of his house, trying to neglect them pestos, but the more he and they try the worse it gets, and the dire get pretty witty
its more a witty situational comedy than a direct horror flick from shudder this time, the script vs. The acting are at times slightly imbalanced, and that drains some of the comedy. As a parapsychological movie it works thanks to good musical score and abrupt noise and physical movements of pretty good quality. The only real bad issue with this mockinaround a neurotic sole is the dragged out playtime, 15 mins less wouldve compressed things better.
But its a film for more or less everyone, i envisioned my eldest child who live in his own squeeky quadruplex, never opening a door or a curtain after dawn, due to a maestrodamical fear of everything that might lurk in his own shadow, so some comparabilities to a real life stud theyve made and found, so a smell recommend from the grumpy old man.
Bad Axe (2022)
american dreams...
Are hard to make, and if youre the lucky one that fullfills the dream of american pride and joy and confidence, there are always someone that wants to take it away from you, either by hate or by force, or by stealing the dream...
it was really a joyride to follow this multi-racial family up in bad axe michigan, grown up from the rice fields of cambodia, fleeing for their life from the genocidal powers of the mean and inhumane powers of the red khmer government, thats main idea was to eradicate every sholared ,brightbrained and human sucesses in the name of superradicalized communism.
Striving building a business that in 2020 came under attack by covid shutdowns, an ongoing race war and threatened by neonazi weaponized hooligans that mourns over the defeat of president trump, you will follow this familys ups and downs, and general anger towards the unfairness of their society.
Its filmed by a cinematographic geek of the family, therefore its more or less a family portrait of a real life documentary, made on a dime, and casted by a brave and at no cost crowd of grandfamily, its well edited, and musical scored, and will bend the beads of emotions anyhow and anywhere among everyone who still believe in the american dream.
The grumpy old man that reviews this documentary from norway recommends, still shellshocked by the knitwit white supremacists way of thinking how a perfect society should be, and their ways of method to fullfill this vision. Some of the most powerful stuff viewed this year.
There's Something Wrong with the Children (2023)
gloomhouse...
Of a blumhouse production this was. Its 2 families going on cabin trip, something is wrong with the kids of one of the couples, its all blurred into some building ruins in the woods that has an endless pit that hypnotize the children, and that screws around with their uncles mental health, that hallucinates and dives into paranoia at any given time...
there are loads of signs and hints to this horror mystery tail, among those are lithium , noseblood and bombdiving and a secret tunnel between the ruins and the huts. Its not much originality in the plot, the rush of scare is forced ahead by the score, more than the acting efforts. They use long stocks of ''one take'' shoots, so its well planned and panned out , but it is not enough.
The script is a real downer, and it ruins the trip for the senior horror geeks, suits better a sofa-tv fanatic with its silky touch. So its just a 5 from the grumpy old man.
Retrograde (2022)
there is a threshold...
On how much adrenaline, cortisol and all the other neurotransmittors that tell you to get the heck out of where you are, that you can cope with...when sitting safe and sound in a cosy sofaenvironment in your own kashbah somewhere west of kabul, before you get so numb and awshocked by the defeat and depression in those ishfahanious afghan eyes, trying to get out of the home of terror and in many cases a surtain death...
i do understand the giant leaps in this production, if they tried to film it all , then the probability letting you watch this production wouldve been near zero, cause this is war correspondency at a higher level...
politially i think the u.s. Government did leave loads of troops behind, not the u.s ones, but all the collaborators within the afghan society. The desperation and dire straites evacuating head over heels they blame on, but all this couldve been planned and accuated a long time before vanishing the grounds of taliban...
the grumpy old man recommends.
The Old Way (2023)
its barely...
A weak 5, mostly for the try, and as an acclaim to lifting the wild west genre on the silverscreen witout too much rott gore and evilness...
but making the perfect wild western aint done in an instant, and the one thing you need most of all is patience... something this production crew didnt. I might be grumpy and meager but editing together a msequence where god almighty's big lamp, the sun , switches on and of at each cam shift, and the sky goes from clear to cloudy in an instant, that is amateurism. That happens only in vacumized and presurized containers in real life so big flaw there. The plot in itself is workable and couldve been a major hit, but its distracted bya slow nitwit dialouge of nonsense, where the toughness hangs about the moustache, and the final outcome so bleached due waiting for it all to holler off in crimson red... i think a cloths mysterious path towards a climax would be far more seeworthy than this slowfox gunshot polkadotted final.
Nick cage, well ive nothing against him, he does his part the best hes allowed to be, the child actress, is fair and square allright, the rest of the main cast and stunts aint less than c-worthy.
Every nice wild west saga made in the past have always been supported by a musical score to remember, its not that excellent, but it rises the quality of the final product.
So a tiny recommend from the grumpy old man, they try but fails alot at production and plotspeed.
Sick (2022)
well its a ...
Bloody aftertaste of covid 19 horror, a desease that where bloody deadly in the start until immunization, a film that thank good leaves the covid issue pretty fast and turns into a real hunter hunts the hunted, with some really good and more up to real life, extended and exclusively filmed and gored scenes of good old evil kniefel bloody horror.
Apart from that it follows the generic lines of a trip to cabin with friend, where things follows the recepie of blood gore and galore. I think the lead actress was a smashing aquintance to watch and meet for me the first time, but whatever, a fresh breath of horror medicine for the scare jumpers out there, recommend from the grumpy old man.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)
decent...
Is a large understatement when reviewing ''puss in boots 2'', because this was a marvel of animation techniques, a pepperspray full of rainbowlike colours from start to end, and a story that accelerate from a dim start of reminisence into a progressive eroticlike cataclysm of sound and vivid visioned story that engulfed most of the tom and jerry language spheres children fairytail caracters in its well filled bossom of fanatic fantastic fantasia of animation. Include the voice acts, the musical score and the insanely well done job made by the colourasation crew, this will stimulate your medula oblongata into a feverish climax that youll dwell over for a long time.
The gibberish grumpy old man saw this 3 times on our last family night after x-mas holiday season, with my wife and each of my adult children, and the jury said...perfect... bravissimo, maybe a dacapo in 20 years, just to forget the caracters again as the years fade by.
Noc w przedszkolu (2022)
as a pre-...
Christmas good ol' yuie comedy its not a hit, its a vast mess of ironical polish understatement humour, that im sure will score a mighty fine homerun among the poles , not further north, west , south nor east of the kaliningrad enclave.
I'm sure its a witty movie, but speaking at the shootrate of a gatling gun on a language thats more slavic than the great slave lake, a language that differs so huge on the diphtongs from my own norwegian, its hard to say where the fun spot is.
But its a film about concerned adults/parents meeting at the kindergarten to plan the yulecrib play that shall be performed for x-mas...
if you have an ear for languages or have time to spare its all there for you. Its just not funny thinks the grumpy old man, even though the cast does a nice job, its too plat and flat.
Bed Rest (2022)
a very...
Generic storyline in the first half, really takes of in the second. Its a ghastly hereditic ghost story of dimensions and a kind that i havent seen for a while, its what you would call'' a whimps roller coaster'' for the nitwit watching tv movies, while at bed rest chewing popcorn to nutrition the forthcoming one, a variant of ghost horror that will scare the heck out of the novise, and at its best scare the wits outta the seasoned one too...
but, and thats the only but i can think of , it comes too short in its calm moments.
The production is good, filled with good special effects, nice acting and it has a twist in the end for the most heartfelt of the viewer, a twist that even soothed a grumpy old man, so therefore a recommend.
Mumbai Mafia: Police vs the Underworld (2023)
it seems...
Like theres no end to crime anywhere, and where it eventually worked for a while fighting bad with bad and worst for worst, they eventually got punished and dolloped with by their own. Cause mumbai police force encounters, or may i say enforcers, cause it was that their real mission was, upon criminal organisations and terrorists had an asphyxiating effect , and made mumbai for a period become a silent town crimewise...
quite unheard of really for western ears and eyes , giving a task force carte blanche authority over life, death and justice. And that really ruined their tactics, when an article in time magazine told the story about them dirty harry's of mumbai.
So crime came back, and are still ruling the streets of mumbai...
as a documentary production its a historical testament of mumbai, a city of dirt and chaos, where i least of all wouldve acted as a policeman. They use loads of media reels, and interviews, but the historians and humanists are oblivious. I do also miss mentioning of the mumbai hotel terror attack of 201?, that mustve had links to the d-company of gangsters. And in the end must be mentioned the lack of a pure time line, especially the latter third of the film...
but its a well made film on its premisses, the grumpy old man who hasnt and wouldnt visit mumbai, will recommend a view, its raw nature of crime shown en masse'.
Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street (2023)
yet another...
Fantastic true crime documentary directed by joe berlinger, and coming to be one of the finest products on how to get an insight into the bernhard madoff ponzi scheme case, made possible through dilligent reasearch and a very well made dramatization by his production crew... a product thats quite on the brink of overwhelmingness to binge for breakfast...and just another star on my chart for being concerned about how economics really works when the road is cleared for any obstacles and monitoring, and crimes like this could happen... and does happen... and will happen in the years to come.
So whenever a ponzi scheme is mentioned and youve forgotten what that is, then ''madoff: the monster on wall street'' will stay there to explain to you...
January 6th (2022)
for me...
As a grumpy old bystander, who knows a little bit about u.s politics from my high school years, and i bet that i know more than 90% of the u.s population about political usa, than u.s citizens knows about my own country , norway, a land of peace and beauty where the king still may take his walking stick for a stroll down the main street of the capital, and where the police just have been allowed to carry weapons as part of their uniform... it seems so ludicrous that its the french naudet-brothers that hands over this panzerblasting documentary about the capitol siege... just like they documented the socalled conspiratious event called '' 9/11'' with sequels, a film i usually view every fall just to remember what its all about...
the naudets do such a grave job that everything after this would be kindergarten stuff of highly partisan conspiracy stuff, that noone at either side would like nor hate vice versa...
so if you are in for a buffet of french documentary brilliance with codus on insight and objectivity, then this is my recommend, i know that 50% of the u.s population disagrees, but that is why we have political observers around the world.
Mencuri Raden Saleh (2022)
a highly interesting...
Indonesian crime/action/heist movie, where i most of all will applaude the complexity of the plot, its tip of the finger filmograhics, very nice effectuation of special effects, and a real dramaturgical highly prescicionally made musical score for a film if its kin. Bravo... and a dacapo may be asked.
Only a few drawbacks must be mentioned, and thats fairly and sharely because im a grumpy old man, that easily falls asleep if a film lasts longer than 2 hours, its too long on its playtime. And i do see some small moments of ''off-acting'', especially where romance and emotions are the target. In this kinda genresetting it didnt fit in so good, but these are just nanomoments in a film that is megapacked with action...
i also praise the use of original language , at least the version i came across, indonesian language and currency seems astronomical anyway, so i might be a trillionaire in those settings...
so if you like smooth criminals heisting people that deserve a pinch on the tip of the nose then watch this one...
Manifesto of a Serial Killer (2023)
paul and charlie ...
Had the best kinky and fetishlike friendship on earth, but was that good for the rest of the society? Definately not, as it was unveiled by californian criminal justice ''league''( police fbi etc), the two culprits kidnapped and surtainly killed 20 to 30 people in a killing spree lasting from 1982 to 1985, and there are still reasons to believe that there are more victims that hasnt been reported missing, nor found on that top of the hill walseyville california.
So if your going to dig for gold in this particullar area, you might find some white ivoryish stuff, well its not an elephant, more likely its bodyparts that should be reported to the police asap, cause mr ng (ning ning) is still alive.
Its one of the better oxygene productions, with minimal use of dramatization, loads of crime scene stuff and a myriad of media cuts and clips, it starts off a little slow but ep 2 and 3 will make your hair stand at the edge.
This is one among the worst of crimes done in the u.s , apart from war incidents and organized crime and civil uproars, criminal history for sure,if youd like to learn more about crime related history, then do as the grumpy old man, and delve into it. Its gross...and very well made.
The Battle for Justina Pelletier (2022)
if you ever...
Have had situations with you health care system that has grounded the way for your ptsd, or if you have had gravely ill children that you only want to survive for all of your heart and your child is taken away from you, just because of that...then this documentary may be kinda strong on the emotions, and you might crash your tv set and start writing hate mail at an instant to the culprits of this series.
I have children myself, my youngest where born with a hard to diagnose kinda asthmae, that almost killed our baby, and we were also accused for not being enough parental, or understanding over the care plans made for our small one. Us parents, both medical nurses, had a string of verbal disputes with the ''uber-doctor'' at the local childrens ward, a ward that stuffed our young one with ephedrine to stop the cough, and that our child definately had no asthmae.
Almost dead we demanded our child transferred to rikshospitalet /voksentoppen asthmae and allergy in children ward in oslo , norway, who at first glance diagnozed his condition and had a hell of a fight over 3 acute weeks to stabilize our child instable condition, and further on settled a treatment plan ( that where so medically heavy that our home uberdoctors eyes nearly sprung out of their sockets when viewing the treatment journal)for the child and us parents + siblings, a cooperation that went on for 12 years with great success, and i thank my wifes ''munchausenic'' efforts that i still have my child safe and sound, still profylacting with medication in his twenties...
''I got the power'' sings the song, and in ultraweird cases as with justina and her family, its a wonder that they still are able to hang together... just think about her other siblings situation up in all this calamity, they have been scarred too, as well as the whole pelletier family... and they have not been rehabilitated economically for the wrongdoings done towards them...its unbelievable, and worse than the inquisitional courts of the medevals...
so be hysterical as a mum or dad if you have a sick child thats being slung around in the health care system where care from the givers becomes a threat to your existence... i wouldve wrung somebodys head off if i had to go that route over again.
So take care over there my dear pelletiers, its a heck of a battle done , and a dire future may come, but thy shall overcome, my acclamations goes to you...and a little bit to the documentary makers, and a big reccomend from the grumpy old man.
Spoiler Alert (2022)
its a gay...
Movie, and its a good gay movie, especially the second half, and its a great gay movie due to its solid acting cast, and it made me feel almost like i did when i was viewing ''torch song triology'' back in 1989, all except for the dragshowing that was the main theme there, they both share the subject of death and pass away and loss and grieving and a snotty and tearful end. And that is highly unusual deeds made in today gaymovie entertainment which has bend more over to the sexual stuff, the kiss and the closetfighting either its gay or lesbian or btq+ stories...
therefore the grumpy traditional old man gives this a recommend, its biographical sting leaves you numb in the end.
The Amazing Maurice (2022)
this is a...
Story that has been told several hundred times in cartoons, feature and shortfilmlenght movies, theater, tv series and living very vividly in the folklore, namely the ratcatcher of hameln , germany, or the pied piper that stole all the children as ransom money for some ratpack work, so now you know...
but there are quite a few original digressions to the story, and maurice the cat is one of them, still not able to play the flute, he is the real mobster that steal from the poor and never gives it back...
production is pretty generic when it comes to advanced animation, and the first 30 minutes scriptwise isenglishenglish spoken uziwise at a heck of a speed without telling much actually, but after that it works, and they are able to draw you into the royamune of the ratking, an underground landscape so lavishly animated and coloured i just ended up fascinated.
So have a happy hour with maurice and his bunch, is a recommend from the grumpy old man.
Coupez! (2022)
first and most...
Of all, i am disgusted by the zombie genre, cause they are dead eating the living that dies wakes up into eating other living humans, and animals, there aint much space for the developement of new inklings and ideas..
so whats new here, well its french, and they try to make a comedy over an earlier feature movie called z, its all planned from the director in secretes, cause he wants the directors cut to be as real as possible, there are some gushing special effect and some one arm jacks that crawls around with or without its parentbody... and thats its.
Loads of well known french actors that play around with loads of blood and gore, but as it is x.mas day and the woodstick saltsmoked sheeprib meal(pinnakjøt in norwegian) from yesterday evening are still regurgitating my oesophagus, tingling the nether ends of my tonsilles that i ectomized many years ago, this is just meeehhh entertainment today. Almost 2 hours of panic and slash isnt food for a nearly braindead grumpy old man.
Murder in the Wicked West (2022)
based on...
What ive seen in the 3 first episodes, it merely follows the investigation discovery reciept for a family real crime tv gathering at night, very little blood, no police body cams, and very few delinquent interviews done at the police pitstop.
But its based on very good storytelling through interviews with the detectives and police force, and a heavy load of beefed up homeboy, friend, brother or grandfather interviews that gives a good feeling of them things going dire, as it usually did, and still does out there in the wild west.
Some media clips, and audio evidence and stillphotoes of victims are used to place the dominoes before they fell so in general its a policesteered and policedominated investigative series from the land of silence, not sicilly, utah, just the grumpy old gunslinging midwest USA.
So if you want some more flashing blue crime scenes, go somewhere else bodycam flicks, but this is decent storytelling anyway. A small recommend.
