Blur (2022)
Interesting story, but the plot lacks purpose
I tried to reduce any spoiling to soft, no story plots revealed.
"Blur" emerges as a commendable effort within the indie or low-budget film scene, particularly when it comes to its visual effects. The movie kicks off with a creative premise, laying down an initial story that piques interest and sets the stage for what could be a compelling narrative journey.
However, the film soon encounters its primary setback: the main script's lack of depth and character development. While the initial setup introduces us to a misterious plot brimming with potential, later falters in advancing these elements. The narrative struggles to introduce meaningful challenges or obstacles for the characters to overcome, leading to a plot that feels stagnant and underdeveloped.
Without spoilers I cannot delve much into how some characters find their fate, but some situations just happen without any subtlety that would give coherence to how/why it happens. Keeping it short, some occurrences felt fabricated instead of natural to the plot.
The performances delivered by the lead actors -the main actress and the actor portraying the police officer- deserve recognition. Their efforts add a layer of engagement to the film, considering the slow roles they were assigned.
Unfortunately, "Blur" concludes on a note that many might find underwhelming. The ending lacks the narrative payoff that viewers might hope for after investing time in the story. A little abrupt too. Even if you can consider the ending acceptable, the reasons why it happened were not.
The 'Evil' lacks a tangible method for the protagonists to confront or overcome it. They experience a series of continous perpetrations from the entity without any chance of finding ground or development. This absence of a well defined evil, or motivations of it, transforms what could have been a captivating adversary into a mere plot device, reducing the characters to passive entities caught in the wake of powers that can just happen and cannot be confronted.
Rebel Moon - Chapter One: Chalice of Blood (2023)
Rebel Moon: A Cosmic Letdown
"Rebel Moon" shoots for the stars with flashy visuals, but the story gets lost in space. Zack Snyder's cool effects and hero scenes can't save it from a slow, crowded plot.
The story drags, and there are too many characters with no time to get to know them. The movie rushes through world-building, making it hard to care about what's happening. Even with great visuals, the pacing is off, leaving you disconnected.
Acting feels fake, artificial, with overacted poses and gestures that don't help.
There's also the usual Hollywood agenda message there, from beginning to the end. I won't get into details about this, probably there are already videos on this subject.
The ending is a miss. You won't care about what the characters did achieve or didn't, if they are betrayed, who lives or dies in the process. "Rebel Moon" aims high but falls short of being the epic space adventure it wants to be.
Rick and Morty: The Jerrick Trap (2023)
Not as good, but far better
After digging Rick and Morty ep. 1 with a score of 4, it wouldn't be fair if I don't review ep. 2.
It really changed the game, in many ways.
The series now portrays a new formula. May be the Morty's voice has some work finding its right place. Having Rick pairing with other characters is bringing a weirdness into the traditional Rick & Morty's dynamics.
Justin Roiland out of the scene has brought changes, not all bad. Anyway I would like him to return.
The idea of Jerry's fusion with Rick was a clever one, Rick became more human and Jerry was enjoying himself having more tools (intelligence) to face life. Both of them found their missing half and that brought comfort to their misery. The script had many good moments.
I don't regret throwing episode 1 in the trash and I don't regret changing again my mind about the direction of the TV show.
It was good and hope it gets better yet!
Rick and Morty: How Poopy Got His Poop Back (2023)
It's not about the voices, it's about the script
I wasn't expecting that Season 7 was as good as what Rick and Morty always delivered. New voice of Rick and Morty is fine, close enough to be fun.
But... beyond the voice similarity, Justin Roiland clearly was delivering much more than the familiar sounds of our loved characters voices, he clearly was much more... and it feels that he is not present anymore.
You cannot just put the best characters together doing stupid stuff without Rick's clever and far-fetched ideas and Morty's reasoning giving sense to the story.
This was one of the smartest animated shows even when they where taking irrational decisions. Best clever show out there downgraded to a "different" audience.
This was simply a sequence of bad jokes and an attempt to put in well-known characters to try to produce a connection that was definitely lost.
This wasn't Rick and Morty.
Black Mirror: Beyond the Sea (2023)
It was always dark, but not like this
Producers thinks that darker and more sinister has become a necessity for selling.
I am not enjoying this season. Netflix lately seems to be a factory of hell content. Are the illuminati in control of the network?
Does it have to become so explicit? Where will this end? I'm very aware that season 1 has a couple of episodes with strong content. But this episode and the previous one have "gore" content.
Do we really need more psychopath films because the audience has this urge for brutality in order to give meaning to their lives? Or to enjoy it?
I don't think so. But it is becoming normal and this is not my choice.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 17: The Apostate (2023)
The Mandalorian derailed as Disney has us used to
Ups... Disney did it again!
I think this site is not involved in what is happening with reviews, but... reviews are bought for top movies and series. Hollywood is investing tons of money on improving scores and perception of viewers.
How difficult is to spot this? Just take one of those users that give a 9 or 10 to one of those impossible to digest episodes and look at other reviews from the same user. At this point you will have no doubt these users were paid for doing this.
Seems unfair? Well... presidents buy elections, winners at war write history, Hollywood buys success, nothing new under the sun.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
I think many will miss John Williams and George today
There has to be a lot of viewers who enjoy content with misdirection, terrible character development, indoctrination, a feminist agenda, lousy camera direction, and dialogue that can only be worthy of an audience addicted to was is "cheap"... and the worst music.
Money could only bought the name and actors, but Star Wars is a story, it was a story, a compelling story.
After Obi Wan episode 3, I don't see any chance of recovery for this series. Disney bought Star Wars purely for profit and it's very clear that it can't create compelling characters on its own, so it relies heavily on the source content. The problem is that the substance that George Lucas created is being systematically destroyed.
Perhaps Mandalorian excited many of us with all the potential that it offered, however beneath the brilliance (of the armor), the content is weak, has lots of empty space and lacks depth.
Star Wars under Disney's mantle lacks moments of mystery, wonder, emotion and grace. It appeals to nostalgia to survive and tries to evoke what is in our memories in an attempt to make us feel something that is not there.
What can be seen in this series is like a diluted supermarket wine with a beautiful label attached.
