Blade Runner (1982)
If You Know You Know
Blade Runner is hands-down the best movie of its kind. What is its kind? Dystopian Science Fiction? Futuristic Film Noir? Semi-Fantasy Thriller? Who knows? But it is a fantastic movie with a great story, amazing acting, effects way ahead of its time, accessible yet dreamlike, with a psycho-emotional theme that all can think about, feel, and relate to.
Released in 1982 and long past its story year of 2019, it still holds its own against other shinier, computer-assisted science fiction movies. I'll even refer to Blade Runner as an epic. Not due to some sweeping, wide open scenery or depiction of years gone by, or a cast of thousands, but by its sheer impact in both a visceral and visual way. Plus the perfect soundtrack. The world it depicts is here, yet is so far away. So industrial and yet still somehow human. It was - and still is - an amazing view of a future that never was, and maybe will never be, for better or for worse.

I Loved the Action
What can I say? Realistic action scenes. Different bad guys with their own agendas. And as a simplistic look at the power struggles in Afghanistan it works. If you want complete accuracy, watch a documentary. If you want some action and suspense, watch this movie. The only thing missing was humor and romance, but sometimes a movie should just do one thing. I thought the acting was moderate to great, depending on the actor or character. No horrible or poor acting in my opinion. Plot was pretty straightforward, but the viewer has to fill in some gaps on his or her own. Some nice, sweeping scenes as well (yes, I know it's not Afghanistan - but some of the camera shots are pretty good).

It's Entertainment
I am a combat veteran from back in the day - a combat medic in fact. 91A/B for those who know or care. Anyway, while I don't find this series compelling I do find it interesting. Of course, I never went in expecting MASH 2.0 either. Episode 1 was lame, but episodes 2 and 3 have been quite a bit better. Many of the lower ratings are from folks who maybe gave up on the show too early. It's a mix of fantasy and reality, of things that absolutely don't happen with a few things that absolutely do. This series is not trying to be a gritty documentary and it admittedly has very few knee-slapping moments, so I just take it for what it is - mid week entertainment.
