bodybag (2024)
What's in the bag??
If only some relationship squabbles were the biggest thing to worry about; noooooooo, gotta deal with the existential threat of a malevolent abandoned corpse come to life on an equally abandoned highway.
This new short from Anthony Leeroy is dark (figuratively and literally), gritty, and disturbing and is probably his most pointed work in the horror genre. The Hellraiser / Lost Highway vibes wrap tge whole thing in a familiar spooky aesthetic, while the short running time lends itself well to repeat viewings.
This would make an awesome primer to any Halloween movie marathon, and a very effective vehicle for an anthology (hint hint wink wink nudge nudge). Get on it Anthony!
The Love Witch (2016)
An effective melding of visuals and narrative, a profoundly saddening tale
Director Anna Biller utilizes every creative tool in her repertoire as a filmmaker and artist to craft a purposeful, stylistic, visual symphony that serves to enhance the heart-breaking story about a woman who tries everything within her means to get what eludes her the most, true love, in a man's world.
Absolutely recommended.
Dolly Deadly (2016)
What doesn't kill us, can make us kill
Director Heidi Moore does a remarkable job in weaving a cautionary tale about the dangers that come as a result of bullying and pushing someone far enough over the edge, that rather than naturally building a stronger character, results in a violent transition to a very dark place. "Dolly Deadly" follows the tragically motherless young boy, "Benji" as he goes through hellish trial and tribulation, ultimately leading him down a blood soaked path of revenge. The film's art direction, clever use of colored lighting, brilliant performances from lead child-actor Justin Moore, and exquisitely disturbing - and realistic - practical gore FX work defy it's low budget production. There are a couple missteps, mostly regarding pacing and gauche performances from some supporting cast, but it doesn't do much to lessen the effect of the film's core message and the power of how it presents it.
Highly recommended.
