Ms. Marvel (2022)
Impressive visual storytelling
A ton of negative reviews citing the lack of a story or "villain" in the first episode. They're clearly introducing a new character and the "villain" is her struggle between her family's culture and her desires as an American teen. We'll meet the prototypical villain in due time.
The first episode was visually beautiful and there's a beautiful story being told that typical White audiences aren't familiar with. Those who can't recognize it just haven't gotten outside of their own bubble.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Don't listen to the toxic fanbase
This is a fantastic movie and incredible follow up. It's the second-best Matrix movie ever made.
Keanu is perfect and delivers an honest performance about mental health and loneliness. It perfectly balances the reality (or lack of) of everything that happened in the original trilogy while advancing the story to a much larger world of the Matrix.
Neil Patrick Harris is a classic Matrix villain who had his own limits and fell to them. I can't wait for Matrix 5 if there is one and this is any signal.
The bad reviews are a result of unrealistic expectations and a fanbase that wrote their own movie in their head. It's nonsensical that this isn't much higher rated. The action is fantastic and the storyline makes you care.
The Haunting of Hill House: Silence Lay Steadily (2018)
Untold perfection
Mike Flanagan will walk you down the halls of his mind. You might not know where he's taking you and it won't always be comfortable but you're going in the right direction.
This show is about a family with an incredibly tainted past finding peace with each other and the losses they've endured. The finale wraps it up in a satisfying fashion that few shows even approach.
I've seen a lot of reviews upset by the "happy" ending, but it's not entirely happy nor does any rule prescribe an upsetting ending. Not the genre nor the source material because this is its own story. Mike Flanagan has earned my trust so I'd bet any other ending could've accomplished satisfaction in my eyes but this one goes above and beyond. I come from a family where siblings have battled with drug addiction, one was lost to suicide and a parent was lost long ago. It's not easy and this show is shockingly accurate in the way it represents the various coping mechanisms and stages of grief.
I can't imagine not being satisfied in the way this show wrapped. To each their own.
The Last Dance (2020)
Predictable view of Jordan's accolades
This was an entirely uninventive look at Jordan's time with the Bulls. Because it's a story told by Jordan and only by Jordan we never get a single true challenge to any of his many misdeeds as a person. Michael Jordan is not a good person and never has been. At least not to anyone who doesn't work for him.
Lies go unchecked, stories go unvetted and we end up with a romanticized version of an extremely flawed man. We will never hear the true story of Michael Jordan who is undoubtedly one of the greatest athletes in American history.
Dragon Ball Super: Doragon bôru cho: The Approaching Wall! The Final Barrier of Hope! (2018)
This might be the best episode of Dragon Ball ever
This episode has definitely top five action and top five dialogue the show has ever had. Incredible writing after a long lull in quality for this show.
