Permanent (2017)
A family values movie that isn't schlocky
I like movies with strong ethical centers but I hate movies that are predictable or patronizing.
I am so delighted when I find a movie about a family with positive attributes but is also genuinely funny and original.
This movie is all that!
It deals with some heavy issues but isn't ponderous.
The Girlfriend Experience (2014)
Funny misogyny
If you can get past the glaring misogyny, it actually a pretty funny little film. Maybe the film was pitched after a couple of beers at the frat house.
The writing and production values are good. Erin Foster does a good job with her role and I hope she gets some better roles. (I missed "Barely Famous") It's a one-joke movie that lesser directors would have tried to turn into a full length movie. Seven minutes is just about right. Maybe even a little long.
The one joke is based in some really old, worn-out stereotypes about women. And when I say "old" -- I think "The Honeymooners" covered this territory and it wasn't fresh back then.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015)
The perfect sitcom balance of fresh, funny, familiar and feel-good
It's a rare sitcom that hits the perfect balance of being funny and original while still being uplifting with likable characters.
No disrespect to edgy, cynical sitcoms but those aren't for me.
Friends, Modern Family, King of Queens and Glee are what I like to watch after a stressful day at work.
While the characters are flawed, they are all ultimately well-intentioned and likable.
But -- and this is a big but -- I want fresh takes on that familiar formula. And I want to laugh out loud.
"Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" hits that perfect balance.
The musical numbers make it obviously original but the show also has a number of original characters that drive the plot.
The romantic lead, for example, is a short Filipino guy rather than a hunky white guy. And it totally works! And the zany neighbor is a sexy, disaffected millennial woman. And that works, too.
My only problem with the series is that the other suitor in the love triangle is supposed to be troubled and moody but he's just not convincing. It's not reflection on his acting abilities -- I think it was a bad casting choice.
But, that's not a deal breaker. This is one of the best sitcoms in a long time.
