Turning Red (2022)
Hype killed the movie star
This movie is not pleasent. I could live well enough alone for the premise, but, for how people went about promoting it, it cost the movie its value. I can't go into anything if it means rubbing elbows with unpleasant types that make up the majority, especially when I offer opinions to the contrary.
My biggest issue with the film is the arbitrary use of the year 2002. If you take that away, the core element of the film would not be lost, it would still be about a girl going through the throws of growing up and becoming a furry.
Also this has to be the ugliest Pixar movie I have ever seen, nothing like mugging the camera every few minutes.
Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie (2014)
All that's left is pain
When your first point is that it's supposed to bad, you know your movie has absolutely nothing to it. I feel bad for those who paid money to fund this movie, that's a lie, they would gladly take steaming fudge if it came from James Rolfe.
I love bad movies, but those only work because their bad qualities come by accident. When you intend to make the worst movie possible, there is no room for imagination, either you laugh at it or you don't. I didn't. Sensible people would've dropped off after this.
Not looking for helpful ratings, just getting this out there.
Mr. Malevolent (2018)
Apparently we're all idiots
I'm no stranger to bad movies, heck, I love them, well the more obscure of the bunch. I love anthologies all the same, so I decided to seek this out and see what the trouble with this was. I was thankful someone uploaded this to YouTube... because not even a refund could fix things.
This movie wears its views on the sleeve. Yes, many of these issues addressed are real, but the way they go about it, reducing it to a cartoonish degree, it kinda ruins the prospect and takes away its legitimacy, don't you think?
Condescending messages, sloppy camera work, oftentimes sloppy writing, and the lingering sense the director thinks we're idiots, I saw this for free, and I still feel ripped off.
Homeless for the Holidays (2009)
And the Award for Most Miserable Woman Goes To...
The mother in this was my only takeaway from this entire movie, and that's obviously not a good thing. Without the right reactions then we wouldn't get through various holiday movie cliches, and we wouldn't want that, now would we?
Have her complain about her husband not being home because of his job, and source of income? That's there. Have her complain about him not having a job, while you just sit on your behind less you relegated yourself to a stay-at-home housewife to prepare for this moment? That's the idea behind this movie after all.
It's like the powers that be set up an outline and wrote dialog based on it, rather than actually writing something with weight to it. It wouldn't be so bad, if it weren't for the occasional whiplash and foregoing of small plot points.
The thing about these Christmas movies is that the worst aspects of them always stick out. Only way to make this more prophetic is to refer to the mother as Karen.
As with many saccharine Christmas movies, there is little to offer here. Heck, the Christmas spirit is incredibly dull in this movie, so just tune in to Hallmark every Christmas, with so many movies there you're bound to find something enjoyable. Let this rot in obscurity.
The Red Ape Family (2021)
This is the Bar
Nothing can get any lower than this. There is no way to justify NFTs, there is no way you can justify a high asking price, there is no way you can justify low quality animation that somehow has less than any barebones production.
All this is good for is justifying the existence of other low quality shows.
This is as low as bad animation could get, welcome to planet earth ladies and gentlemen.
Turbocharged Thunderbirds (1994)
You gotta have a buck to make a few quick ones.
Of all the cash-grabs that were a dime a dozen in the 90s, this takes the cake as the cheapest and most desperate... thing to ever exist. This was made to capitalize on the success of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but the people behind this didn't realize that lightning never strikes in the same place twice.
So what does this have to show for itself? Cheap effects, cheap appeals to the youth, cheap props that you can easily identify as other things, and this is just within the first half of the first episode.
It's not just an insult to a groundbreaking British television series, but an insult to sensibility, the youth, and cash grubbers that actually know better.
High Guardian Spice (2021)
Poor and problematic
I won't go into the controversy surrounding this series during its earlier stage of production. As far as anyone should be concerned, we just have a new series on an anime streaming service. It will be judged as such.
The issue here is a lack of true innovation, or at the very least innovation that seems natural. Characters are one note or adhere to traits already used in other shows, the plot is just as flat and basic, the animation... I'm not gonna complain about a western cartoon being featured on an anime service, but this animation is pretty subpar.
Basic movement, mediocre art direction, often lazy backgrounds.
The writing suggests the writers are out of touch with the world or have no grasp on natural progression or presentation. It feels more like meeting a quota than providing true representation. Not all LGBTQ+ individuals have garish hairstyles or a punk look, it's a borderline caricature.
It's less "A lesbian character" and more. "Look, it's a lesbian character, are you satisfied?" I'm all for representation, but I fear it will always be handled in the worst possible way.
If these characters are based on the writers, then it's less about representation and more of a warped interpretation of it.
Either the wrong people are representing diversity, or this is just a poorly written show that was not worth the delays and vague initial details, plagued with cliches, bland characters and stories and low quality animation.
Both. It's both.
Police Academy: The Series (1997)
It ain't quality, but it's still fun
I had never seen any of the Police Academy movies. I'd be encountering the franchise, or some part of it, for the first time here. As a given, the show isn't as funny as the movies, at times trying way too hard to be funny.
While the movies had more nuance, at least I would assume, at the very least the jokes aren't unbearable, at best overly random (lest they were borrowing from the films.) The one episode I watched I managed to get all the way through, so at least they got a sense of bearability down.
It's not impossible to sit through, just corny and pales in comparison to the movie series it's based on. If you're in the mood for some cheesy screwball comedy, this is the perfect show to shut off your mind to and just have fun with it.
Sammy (2000)
Deserved Better
Sammy wasn't the greatest show of all time, but it was far from the worst. It has heart, style, its finger on the pulse of contemporary Hollywood, and the supporting cast lends itself greatly to mannerisms split between two characters by the same lead.
It didn't deserve to burn off after two episodes, it would've been more practical to sell the remainder to a network that would've welcomed it, as NBC had no interest in this show at that point. Had this run its course entirely on the network then fine, people are allowed to think what they want as they got the full experience.
You could've done far worse, and I can say that with confidence given the glut of low quality adult animation.
Danny (2001)
The word of the day, is "Stock"
CBS is no stranger to generic sitcoms, but to be fair, a generic sitcom doesn't always have to be bad, because the formula is essential, and good characterization or an ounce of bearability can bring it a long way, CBS had those in spades.
Danny isn't good, but it's not that bad either. The show follows the sitcom conventions to a tee with very little divergence. The staying power it would ultimately have was determined by its early cancellation two episodes in.
While Daniel Stern is no stranger to family sitcoms, one of his two most notable roles in that realm was The Wonder Years, but it seems he couldn't shake the stigma of Marv, he had nothing else going for him.
Danny has no interesting qualities, or at least those not done better in other sitcoms. The odd things that occur with or by him are random, sure, but they feel abrupt. Random oddities work better with either a good set-up or flow to it.
Admittedly, the show was easy to sit through, and I do like the single camera approach, plus it can do wonders with most of its good-natured humor.
But at best, this feels more like filler than anything else, I imagine they wanted something to fill the season's schedule. Interesting trivia, one of the producers behind this would go on to produce Reba.
Only one episode has resurfaced of this show, and honestly, one is enough. This is basic sitcom 101, but at least it's easy to sit through.
Noon Blue Apples (2002)
Deserved a full release at least
Noon Blue Apples is a slow burn. It starts off a bit boring but gets more insane as you go on, such is the way with conspiracies and their respective theorists. You'd get a lot of references to popular conspiracies, whether you're told about them or just happen to see imagery relating to one.
While not the best character deconstruction tale ever, it at least deserved a wider release. If you have the patience for slow burns, this movie is at least worth a watch.
Saberspark (2011)
What do people see in this guy?
He is incredibly hard to ignore, in regards to the most obnoxious thumbnails on YouTube he takes that trophy with both hands. But for every recommendation, a thought occurs to me.
What could he bring to the table?
He seems to have found a market in telling us over and over again why bad CGI is bad, even though better reviewers have told us why. You look up one bad CGI movie, you're bound to find Saberspark's name. Guy's basically a borderline leech.
Beyond that, it seems he's too eager to play it safe and covers topics that're bound to get him that sweet sweet ad revenue and trust. Sensible people would feel his videos are unintentionally condescending.
People go for obvious targets usually because they're too afraid to do hot takes or potentially encourage further discussion on popular topics. For perspective, this guy singled out Fish Police against a major disappointment encompassing the writers and producers of Animaniacs.
Overall, this guy doesn't fill me with confidence.
I Hate Everything (2013)
I'd hate anything that'd get me far.
I was a big fan of this guy for several years, for both his rants and his movie reviews.
He had been consistent for many years, and therein lies the downfall. Once you find the pattern in IHE's content, it's a matter of how long it takes before it gets old for you. I gave up around the time he released a predictable April Fools Joke video.
At this point IHE went from contrarian icon to forced meme. It's less about finding what's wrong with what people like, but validating things people agree with. Maybe he got tired of idiots in the comment sections?
PhantomStrider (2014)
Points for honesty, but can otherwise do without
I'm not a big fan of countdown channels due to their manufactured feel and faceless runners. PhantomStrider is of the Matthew Santoro crop, being a present personality while conducting his countdowns.
Whatever I may say next, I will say I do like how he doesn't try to masquerade how generic his format is, heck, few animation channels rely on this format so it makes him unique by default.
However when it comes to his topics, if you're knowledgeable of the opinions of the animation community, you're bound to piece together how the lists would go down.
It does feel like he wants to genuinely incorporate his opinions, but at times it comes off as a bit narrow and one-sided.
Whatever the case, you get what you clicked for.
LS Mark Commentaries (2018)
Mehdiocre
I've been on and off when it came to LSMark. I first heard of him during a debacle with another reviewer. That, along with his videos related to Butch Hartman accounted for all I saw with him.
Beyond that, the guy falls into the same web as other mediocre reviewers, relying on known opinions and being too afraid to branch out, even making pot shots, which you'd only do if you know you're on a low ebb.
Little Angels: The Brightest Christmas (2004)
A burnt bulb on Christmas Day
For the most part this movie faded from the public eye. Not even a low-res copy of this film exists on YouTube, something that even Miracle in Toyland (another of the company's effort) has.
For perspective, this and Miracle both have Cam Clarke in the lead role, and with many of the glaring flaws on a visual basis, I assume both movies were being worked on simultaneously, think of this like a plan B if Miracle fell through.
Going into this, just know the Little Angels on the cover play little of a part. Oh they're part of the plot, but they're just onlookers 90% of the time. The amount of times they had to intervene is rendered meaningless when it boils down to where they actually try to do something.
The characters that do get focus are too bland to name, in fact at least two of them can be considered duplicates of the mains from Miracle, even sharing the same beliefs and motives.
Even by the low standards exhibited by the production company, this has to be the worst film I've ever seen. I'm that sure.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020)
Fundamentally flawed, worst in the trilogy, but still enjoyable
Following the death of Stephen Hillenburg and the sudden announcement of a spin-off, something Stephen was strongly against, it seemed this movie would've had a lot of hurdles to go through.
Let's get this out of the way, they changed a lot of the show's lore for the sake of laying the groundwork for the spinoff, something fans won't shut up about, but even with that, you still have an enjoyable story to sit through. Take everything you knew about SpongeBob, shove it aside and treat it as a self-contained product, probably the mindset the ones behind Kamp Koral have.
I would've been strongly opposed to this movie if it had no substance, that's obviously not the case.
I will admit this is the worst film in the SpongeBob movie trilogy, it's a given for any trilogy, but it's far from being the worst movie ever.
Attaway General (2020)
A Cardinal Sin
The worst thing you can do with a cast coming off of a god awful app is make a straight-forward show that's meant to be taken seriously. All I can say about this show is that TikTok should be banned in the US.
School Gyrls (2009)
Tweens deserve better
Seems the only people who'd speak favorably of this movie are either fans of the band featured or people who grew up with it. For perspective, I saw this movie when it first came out, admittedly, I'm no tween girl, but dedicated media just limits your appeal.
The movie feels like it exists solely to promote a band who were due to release their first album. Though something tells me that's exactly so. It was made in conjunction with their manager and their record label and the band's first album came out a few months after this movie got released. Effort was concentrated solely on getting the name out there, and it shows through a story that's thinner than a stick figure.
The girls play fictionalized versions of themselves, which isn't a bad idea in itself, but they go for over-the-top personalities that encompass their entire character. The key to making any good character is multiple dimensions to their personality. They do try this, mostly, for one character, but it's one that's somehow both too obvious and too undeserving.
Any character that isn't the main one with some significance is either too bland or too obnoxious to like.
Also at times I feel as though the movie was rushed. Action sequences and even establishing shots at times when they aren't needed are replaced with cheap animation. As if their filming permit expired or they just wanted this movie out as soon as possible.
Compared to other musical films, this sucks harder than others because of how corporate it feels. They cared more about pushing a brand than they did making something worthwhile. Longshot had a plot of some kind, The Naked Bros. Band had charm, Big Time Rush's means of comedy helped suspend your sense of disbelief.
Basically saying tweens would enjoy this movie suggests you have no faith in their sense of quality.
Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi (2004)
What $500 can get you
I used to watch this show as a kid. I was also an idiot in hindsight. Just to get this out of the way, there're far better comedic cartoons out there, even ones that aren't critically successful. Like the average Canadian cartoon.
I bring Canada up because a lot of the low budget toons we've caught in previous years came from them. But Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi is proof that the states can work for even less.
This show has the worst flash animation I've ever seen, other shows at the very least get the bare minimum of effort necessary. In this show, the flash animation is choppy and very limited, movements don't feel entirely natural, and I have the feeling they're going for an anime-inspired style. Any attempts at that come off as shallow at best, and the overall design looks as though the creators never saw an anime in their lives, and just went by a vague description.
If it wasn't obvious, the premise isn't interesting either, just uber simplistic comedy with characters that range from bland to flat out ridiculous. It can take out-there ideas and render them boring.
Kappa Mikey and My Life Me, regardless of how you feel about them, at least had the right grasp on anime, while their stories are hit or miss, you can tell they had some level of care for the art form, plus had better flash animation to top it all off.
Overall, this show makes me feel like the animation studio is a front for a more disturbing deal.
The Mighty B! (2008)
It's okay
Part of me wanted to hate this show, but in a way it grew on me. Only issue I have is the occasional art/animation inconsistency (noticeable if you pay enough attention.) Once you understand its humor and intent, it's really a slow-burner, nothing particularly hatable.
MP4orce (2006)
To answer your question, yes this show deserves one star
Admittedly, it'd be pointless to do a review of this show, not because it's a catastrophe that need not be tended to, but because it's such an enigma. It's out there, but nobody seems to know or talk about it.
But maybe it's deserved.
A near-two seems harsh for what looks to be a forgettable cartoon, but just know that only three people gave it ten stars
The problem with this show is how unashamedly mediocre and generic it is. Its characters are one note and abide heavily to checklists related to action cartoons. We have the cocky douche, the alternative-looking sarcastic one, the blonde one and even the token black guy. Plus the generic wise guide, who looks like sperm. For the four mains, their only traits are the archetypes they play, oh, and they like video games. The geriatrics that wrote this series must've reached far for that one.
Any characters that do stand out do so for the wrong reasons. One of the enemies was stupid enough to release the major antagonist by entering a suspicious (and laughably specific) cheat code. Yeah, why don't you give away your mom's debit card info while you're at it?
This is going by the first episode, but since it's essentially serialized and the first episode determines whether or not you want to follow along, one episode is all you need, and it didn't fill me with confidence.
The animation is as enigmatic as the show's history. On the surface, it looks good, it's a hybrid type series; 2D characters against 3D environments. The effect is ruined by the digital nature of the set pieces and the often lifeless characters.
If you pay close attention, you can pick up on many nuances. For example, at the start when the four are playing a game, the screen doesn't move, but their actions suggest otherwise. During their transformation to their game counterparts, it looks as though their game forms are just JPEGs that get dragged by a mouse. Plus, the poses don't match their normal forms, it's basically a rush job. Perhaps as proof they just used JPEGs or whatever assets they had available, when one of the characters gets frozen, the character doesn't give an expression implying so. It's like they took a final render of the character through a design pitch and put it behind an ice filter.
The dialog is over-expository and rigid. High points to this are when one of the enemies doubles down on revealing the fat that he has become a villain in the game, even stating the name of it (side-note, they state the name of the game in full, which adds to the overall clunkiness.) One of the characters uses overrated , unironically I might add. A chance for a decent joke was ruined by a lack of beats. (if you play a stupid answer straight, then clearly you're just chasing a paycheck and don't care about making something halfway decent.)
MP4ORCE is a crash course in how generic a show can be and how it can elevate mediocrity to levels not seen since The Black Cauldron. It's destined to be a right of passage for upstart reviewers, complete with surface level flaws to help people get the hang of reviewing, or heck, maybe it can be proof that action shows can suck as much as comedy shows.
And this is coming from somebody who finds enjoyment in mediocrity.
The Twilight Zone (2019)
A steady decline
For every revival of this iconic series, some things are bound to go arwy. The first revival was interesting, providing a slightly bigger emphasis on horror, but perhaps that was it's achilles heel, as it competed with the likes of Tales from the Darkside, Monsters and Tales from the Crypt. The second revival was hardly much better, not for a lack of effort but the fact that it could easily be lost in the shuffle of horror anthologies from yesteryear (and that was from the same people behind the 90s revival of The Outer Limits)
You'd think that with someone as experienced as Jordan Peele at the helm that this would make a stark turning point right? About that...
Peele made a seamless transition from comedy to horror, that in itself is commendable, but politics may play a role in how well he did. To be fair, the original Twilight Zone did touch upon politics and Rod Serling was indeed a liberal, but while that series was backed by clever writing and subtlety, Peele seems to think lowly of us and has to spell everything out.
A bulk of the episodes are reliant on at least one political or racial message, and Peele feels the need to do the equivalent of telling us wholesale, while ignoring supernatural elements that seem to play a role in the episode. For instance, in one episode, a supernatural camera is forgone for a play by numbers reference to violence against African Americans (complete with a Black Lives Matter message spelled out clear as day in one scene.) I'd also be doing you a service by not bringing up an episode that clearly mocks Donald Trump and an attack on "toxic masculinity"
I'm not faulting the show for its political messages, I'm faulting a very clear lack of subtlety and an inability to properly mix the supernatural with a political slant. Peele and whomever writes the episodes seem to take us for idiots, why think for yourself when you can think the way they want you to think? A form of escapism was molded into something you'd see every day on the news.
Say what you will about the second revival, at least it doesn't forget its intended plot drives.
Alpha and Omega: Family Vacation (2015)
Another cash grab for the pile
The fact that something as unwanted as Alpha and Omega received a line of sequels proves my stance that companies are only out to get profit, and what better way to get it than by luring in an audience who lacks a grasp on quality cinema.
Since the first movie, the following sequels represented a decline in what little quality the first movie had, and up until the sixth release, this would've been considered the worst. But no, this hardly qualifies. All it really is, is a series of flashbacks mended with 30-40 minutes of actual plot (which is debatable, given how hollow the actual plot is).
I would say more, but that's all there really is to this movie. If the creators don't care about making quality products and putting in effort, why should anyone outside of the fandom for this franchise that shouldn't have been?
Alpha and Omega (2010)
The beginning of the end for quality cinema for children everywhere
Since the late 2000s, animated features for families have begun to decrease in quality. With blatant rehashes, cookie cutter plots, horrendous animation (it's rare to see a 2D feature animation these days), crappy musical numbers and a motive centered around breaking box-office numbers without any regard for quality, I'd have to ask this. Are we reaching the end of good family cinema, and are companies this uncaring for creating quality products? Apparently so.
The problems with this movie become blatant from the get-go. The title of the movie represents a short-lived trend of Romeo and Juliet carbon copies. This is made apparent through the clichéd "two lovers from separate tribes who want to be together regardless" trope. With an aesthetic so paper thin, it's not worth describing in full detail.
The animation is stale, and not distinctive from its competition, and given how significant good animation is when it comes to an animated feature (one that came out at the start of this decade mind you), what's the excuse?
Another big thing about this movie is that it can't tell the difference between feral models and anthropomorphic models. There're times when four-legged wild animals would stand on their hind-legs and make allusions to stuff only humans or animals close to civilization would know about.
Sadly, this has attracted a fandom who has proved to be more devoted (borderline obsessive) than any other fanbase, and they'd fight to defend A&O's furry allusions. You can't defend what is hardly present.
It's a little better than the horrendous sequels that followed this particular movie though, but that's a review for another time.
