The box office data compiled in this list comes from a variety of sources, although care has been taken to ensure that this are mainly relevant and well-known sources that deal with this topic on a day-to-day basis. However, caution should be exercised as there is no official centralized collection of such data in India and no professional official control either. Therefore no liability is assumed for the absolute correctness of the data as with all other lists of this kind on the worldwide web. What this list can certainly do, however, is to provide a reasonable overview of the 2022 cinema year in terms of Indian films and their popularity with audiences.
Since nobody knows at this point how the pandemic situation will develop worldwide in the course of 2022 in terms of the impact on unrestricted cinema openings, but the level of box office results in the previous year were heavily influenced by it, initially a very low LIMIT OF 5 CRORE is set for the entry of films on this list!
All currency conversions are based on the exchange rate from January 1, 2022 in order to ensure equality when viewing. Numbers of votes from the IMDb given here are rounded up, as constant tracking is not possible with daily changes.
In addition, the list at the beginning of the year is also filled with some upcoming potential box office hits of the future, so that visitors can get a first impression of which highlights they can still expect this film year.
35+ HIGHEST RATED INDIAN FILMS ON IMDB INCLUDED ON THIS LIST ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Even commercially highly successful films can be great, this should be written first! But a high box office result is not always synonymous with high film quality or the enthusiastic response from film reviewers and film buffs, but only indicates which films appealed to the broad masses of the population. It is therefore certainly interesting which films were also well received by the users of this film site, which should actually be reflected in the average rating. But unfortunately there is a huge problem!
The average ratings for Indian films in the IMDb should be treated with caution and only be trusted with reservations, because they are subject to very strong manipulation. The ratings are both pushed up and voted down in an extremely way. This is partly done through possibly paid fake accounts hired by the publicity departments of the respective studios and production labels in order to gain an alleged advantage in viewer favor over the competing films that were released in cinemas on the same day or weekend, but also through fanatic crowds of fans organized via social media platforms in order to do this for a variety of reasons which often include political or religious causes, and finally because of allegations of nepotism towards one of the main actors without counting their qualifying acting abilities, if they even have them.

35+ MOST RATED INDIAN FILMS 2022 DIRECTLY RELEASED ON OTT PLATFORMS ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
OTT means over-the-top-content and is especially in India the official term for subscription-based video-on-demand platforms respectively streaming platforms that directly offer their customers films and series to watch.
Especially in the last two years, which were largely shaped by the global corona pandemic, streaming services have became increasingly popular for the first release of films without a theatrical release, among other things as an alternative station due to closed cinemas and the insecure market situation in general.
An overall view of the Indian film year can only take place if one compares the streaming hits that never ran on a theatrical screen with the actual cinema hits. Because the directly digital released films in the following overview with their high number of votes and the resulting presumable high audience popularity would all have had the potential to achieve a good to very good box office result.

► FAQ: What Does Crore Actually Mean?
People connected with the South Asian sub-continent don't need to read this. But hardly any film fan from the West knows what is behind this word. So here is the short explanation: Crore (cr) is a very commonly used South Asian numeral term to summarize larger amounts of money, of course related to the respective national currency, but also other measurements and amounts of people. In this list it logically means:
1000 crore = ⠀10 billion rupees ⠀100 crore = ⠀⠀1 billion rupees ⠀⠀10 crore = 100 million rupees ⠀⠀⠀1 crore = ⠀10 million rupees

What this list can certainly do, however, is to provide a reasonable overview of the 2023 cinema year in terms of Indian films and their popularity with audiences.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ What Happened Last Year? Here's the List: Highest Grossing Indian Films of 2022 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
To ensure that a few films from the smaller film industries add this list overview, initially a very low LIMIT OF 5 CRORE is set again for the entry of films on this list. This value was originally chosen so low due to the strong influence of the corona virus pandemic with its associated restrictions and shutdowns on the box office, but it is also doing quite well in terms of film industry diversity.
All currency conversions are based on the exchange rate from January 1, 2023 in order to ensure equality when viewing. Numbers of votes from the IMDb given here are rounded up, as constant tracking is not possible with daily changes.
In addition, the list at the beginning of the year is also filled with some upcoming potential box office hits of the future, so that visitors can get a first impression of which highlights they can still expect this film year.
10+ HIGHEST RATED INDIAN FILMS ON IMDB INCLUDED ON THIS LIST ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

The following overview shows the 20+ most highly rated Indian films on IMDb with a minimum average rating of 8.0 that are released in 2023 and included on this list with numbers. Behind the IMDb rating in the first place, the Letterboxd rating is added second (multiplied by 2 to equalize) to have a comparative value to a site where Indian bots don't manipulate the ratings as much as here. The sometimes serious differences should alarm everyone!

10+ MOST RATED INDIAN FILMS 2023 DIRECTLY RELEASED ON OTT PLATFORMS ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
An overall view of the Indian film year can only take place if one compares the streaming hits (lower limit: 1000 votes) that never ran on a theatrical screen with the actual cinema hits.

WHICH COUNTRIES WILL BE COMPETE FOR THE 2022s INTL FEATURE FILM OSCAR?
Since 1956 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) presents annually an Academy Award (widely known as Oscar) to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States and its overseas territories with a predominantly (more than 50%) non-English dialogue track and a running time over 40 minutes. The Oscar category previously called "Best Foreign Language Film", but this was changed in April 2019. Fictional live action feature films, animated films and documentaries are allowed. Lots of film industries of various independent states and autonomous regions were invited to submit the best film of the year from their country. The submitted films of the year 2022 selection process had to be first released theatrically in their home countries between 1 January 2022 and 30 November 2022. The deadline for submissions is 3 October 2022!
In order for films to more easily meet theatrical exhibition requirements in these global pandemic times, the Academy will allow films to qualify outside the country of origin, provided the film is theatrically exhibited outside of the United States and its territories for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial motion picture theater for paid admission (same rule as usual).

The submitted films of the year 2023 selection process had to be first released theatrically in their home countries between 1 December 2022 and 31 October 2023. The deadline for submissions was 2 October 2022!
