Platonic (2023)
We need good comedies like this
I am a big fan of this show. It's very positive and gets at the fun and heart of a good (albeit tumultuous) friendship. In fact, it has a lot of fun showing the viewers healthy and unhealthy habits of human relationships, what we should demand for each other, and how those good people in your life should be ones that stick up for you and have good-hearted criticism, regardless of how difficult it may be to hear in the moment.
With heavy hitting dramas that I enjoy watching, there should also be heartfelt comedy series that can remind me of the goodness of life as well, and this show delivers.
Paterson (2016)
An Absolutely Perfect Movie
I have spent years since my theater experience seeing this movie, thinking about what it means to me, and why it touches my heart so much. It's gentle, mysterious, simple and beautiful all at the same time.
There has been no piece of artwork that I think has represented a part of my soul better than this film. To this day I still cannot thoroughly explain the personal elements that this movie blesses me with.
It's told so well, made so beautifully and the performers are so great. Adam Driver is amazing at representing someone so real and so true to life.
I'm thankful Jim Jarmusch made this!
Ozark: Let the Great World Spin (2022)
Don't be hoodwinked
I'm a fan of this show, I really am. But this is the most absurd episode I've seen thus far in this series. There isn't one, but several weird left turns.
The first episode had a few nits that I picked at, mainly involving Jonah's motivation(s). This episode on the other hand is acting like an 8/10 episode when it's trying to not let you realize how pretty bad it is.
Almost every scene is bringing something new into the show that wasn't even considered or thought of as potentially possible by the characters. They clearly need to amp things up and move things quicker since this is the last season.
KC mob bosses son: he's considering partnering with Darlene? AND EVEN FURTHER: He's trying to convince his dad to partner fully with her?! She shot his DICK OFF! Why in the hell would he want to partner with her? Did I miss something? The KC mob should be after Darlene for retribution. It's insane writing-like real ground level character motivation stuff is being completely disregarded.
Ruth has a high roller contact in Chicago? Oh and she does heroin to convince him to join in on a drug selling business idea? That was out of nowhere.
This show went from what I thought was fourth gear to like 12th gear. I didn't even know this show had a 12th gear, I thought it was a 6 speed.
So now I'm bogged down trying to pick up the pace with where the show wants me to be.
The FBI agent has completely turned against her morals and is considering meeting with Navarro himself?! This is episode TWO!! What is her philosophy now? How is she so cool headed about this?!
There are so many damn whiplash moments in this episode that from here on out, I expect this show to pick up the pieces from this mess.
It's your last season and you've gotta end it well, and this is not the way to do it.
Moon Knight: The Tomb (2022)
Don't get me wrong
I do not have attachment to Marvel, I'm not a "lover-of-it-all" or whatever. I do however love adventure, drama, mystery and just good damn acting, writing, directing that leads to something fantastic. And this episode shows that this show can be that in its entirety.
This episode was so damn good, that now I expect the rest of the show to be inconceivably good, because how can it not be after this?
The pace slowed down in this episode, tomb-raiding mystery and adventure was had throughout, as well as a marriage drama with some multiple personality disorder thrown in to complicate things and make it even more interesting.
And, "Oh yeah!" they thought. "Let's also make it like a short horror movie in the middle. Scary, like startlingly scary. Like-dude ripping guts out of people and then trying to stab them in the face with his broken arm bone type of scary."
But no, this episode didn't stop there. It couldn't stand being this good anymore, so it got WAY better and went into such a crazy interesting direction.
I don't even want to write this review anymore because I'm afraid someone will read what I've written so far without seeing the episode so I'll just stop. It's too damn good for me to keep spoiling it.
Crazy good episode of television right here. Bravo.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 5: Return of the Mandalorian (2022)
Finally, a good episode
This series has been widely disappointing to me, but thankfully, a better established, grounded and alive character is brought back to keep me watching. Was it worth it up to this point, to wade through a garbage 4 episode run to then get this gift of an episode? Maybe. But the title of this show dictates that the boring characters will be brought more into the fold of the rest of the show. Hopefully they won't cause drag to the thrust this episode has brought and things continue smoothly, hopefully to a farewell to Boba by the end of the series-cause damn he needs to die off.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land (2021)
I like Star Wars stuff, but this was poor
If we're honest people, we should admit that this was a pretty lame opening. It's fine, it gets the job done, but if this is the level of what Star Wars properties will be accepted as and continue to be, then we're all in for either sad or disillusioned times...or a combination of both.
I'll keep watching, but man, I think giving what the fans want is a bad way to go. Move on to new ideas and stop retreading old stuff.
And if you aren't already turned off by my completely sane point of view, The Last Jedi is my favorite Star Wars movie. Switch it up, get interesting. Stale is not good.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Bloated, boring people pontificating
That's what this show is. 7 overly-long episodes filled with sad-sack weirdos who all have a superhuman ability to keep listening to each other's droning, shallow observations about faith, death and whatever else.
The most realistic parts of these episodes are the supernatural, mythical moments being displayed-stuff that doesn't exist in reality. I say that because the more "real world" aspects of the show are insane. Miracles and horrific things happen in the story, but the GREATEST miracle is the patience these characters have to continue listening to each other babble on.
This series should have been whittled down to a 1.5 to 2 hour movie, and even then it would only barely pass as "good". Instead, if you want to find out what kind of limp ending this story has, you'll have to trudge through a swamp of boring, self-indulgent garbage littered by nearly every damn character of this god-forsaken island.
The Haunting of Hill House is fantastic, Doctor Sleep is fantastic, but man when Flanagan hits a pothole in his filmography, it's jarring.
You'll think "this will probably get better" or "I just want to see what happens", but it's not worth it. RUN AWAY.
Skin (2018)
What's the point?
This is the kind of movie we precisely do not need as a human race.
Noah (2014)
A "Christian" who actually liked this movie...
It bothers me that when religious Christians see this movie, all they usually seem to focus on is that the film doesn't "correctly" portray the actual story and text. I've heard outrageous complaints raging from, "an inaccurate setting" to, "Noah didn't really do that". When really, if you're looking for accuracy in this film, just go read the biblical story for yourself and see that it doesn't have much detail to it. Really, it doesn't.
Noah's Character didn't have much development in the Bible. It very simply describes him and his family without expounding on their more detailed personality traits, thoughts or actions. Noah was just, and God was gracious to him and his family. Noah did what God told him and then Noah learned how to make wine and got drunk. Concerning him and his family, that's about all we got. If you want a film that sticks to that description, get ready for a fairly boring set of characters, with hardly any personality.
For a biblical story like this to be translated into film, you need to venture into a very creative mindset in order to make it and I believe Aronofsky achieved that. The movie has a completely different take on the story that no one else has come close to. And I view that as a positive. Set in an almost dystopian environment with amazing imagery displayed, Noah has a cool look to it's setting.
What intrigued me the most about this adaptation was the inner workings of Noah's mind, displayed by Russell Crowe. He goes through an understandable wave of thoughts before, during and after his task is finished, making him more relatable than the Bible gave description for.
Plausible events took place in the story, and fantastical events occurred as well. But I don't blame the writers of the film for adding these things, seeing as the original story can be read from a fantasy perspective.
One thing that got me confused though was the origin of some larger than life characters that helped Noah in his efforts. It was explained in the film, but given the source of these characters, it needed further explanation for me and left me a bit confused. Along with that is the source from which the characters receive light and fire. There wasn't a description of this substance and again, it left me bewildered.
Other than those two things, the movie was good. I didn't even notice it's length which is quite long at about 2.5 hours. I was thoroughly entertained with the story, the characters, the creativity of the movie, and above all the message that was communicated. The performances given by the actors were well done, and I especially noticed how Emma Watson's character Ila was portrayed very well among others.
One more thing: This movie is based off of a graphic novel developed by both writers of the film. It is not solely based on the Bible, but also on the creative avenues the writers took. Don't expect a Sunday school retelling of a classic Bible story. And be thankful that it wasn't a C rate movie made with limited imagination, crappy acting and a boring plot. Because generally, that's what you get with Christian films.
