Sad Rather Than Funny
I thought this was very well done, and an excellent take on the Frankenstein theme. However, I thought the story was one of great sadness, though most people talk about how funny they found it. If you think about it, there's nothing funny in seeing a little boy witnessing his pet's death due to a car accident. The fact that he later brings the dog back to life doesn't make things better, it only makes them more problematic. Again, if you think about it, such a process would entail handling the dismembered remains of a beloved animal, which is disturbing and unsettling to say the least. Instead of learning to face the reality of death, Victor instead tampers with the natural order of things and brings back Sparky as a kind of mutilated zombie.
Don't get me wrong, I really liked this short film. Not so much because it was a great work of technical genius, but because it finally put a poignant face on the old Frankenstein story. However, it's definitely a lot more dark and disturbing than people give it credit for, and I found the plot to be far more sad, depressing, and even shocking than one might expect from something often marketed as a children's movie.
