The Box of Delights (1984)
Magical, memorable and wonderful!
If you want to get in the Christmas spirit then watch this in the run up to Christmas every year, now it is out on DVD i will be! I loved the book and used to read it on the train home from work every year just before Christmas, Kay and Cole Hawlings are such wonderful characters, the whole story is a classic tale of magic, wonder, fantasy and a bit of danger, set amongst snow covered country fields with hidden camps, and upper class children who have buttered eggs for supper! I think that the fact the children are slightly upper class makes the whole movie more nostalgic and old fashioned, the setting in the British countryside is just perfect and when you hear that 'the Wolves are running' you actually feel a bit scared! I think this has to be one of the best magical, memorable fantasy story's ever written and will never go out of fashion, it will always remind us of old fashioned Christmas traditions, the innocence of being a child and everything that is magical and comforting that we sometimes lose touch with when we grow up!!
Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (2004)
Bring back the original one and only Dirty Dancing!
Having just seen this movie i am sad!! Dirty Dancing was a legend, on a par with Grease, but to me this second one has none of the magic or atmosphere which was in the one and only wonderful and original Dirty Dancing movie of my teenage summer years! The acting in this one was not bad, but lacked the passion and emotion of the first movie, i felt that the plot was flaky and too fast paced to appreciate the feelings that the two main characters had for one another, they had nothing on Baby and Johnny! Johnny was 100 times sexier than the new guy! also the location was totally wrong, i've nothing against Havana, but it lacked the nostalgic feel and should have stayed in America where the atmosphere was perfect, the music was very much the same all the way through, and had no memorable hits, unlike the fantastic soundtrack the first one had,you still hear that on the radio now!! and i'm sorry but the only spark this movie had was when the gorgeous Patrick Swayze arrived, he did not appear much, but brought back happy memories, however that only served to remind me how sad it was that the second movie was so not Dirty Dancing! I definitely did not have the time of my life! To me there is only ONE Dirty Dancing and always will be.
