Ray Donovan (2013)
... the Roy & Mickey show..
..looking back have no clue why this show slipped past.. now only into watching the start of the second season.. it is an incredible production.. the casting and script writing are the best you'll find today
..and Jon Voight has found the high point of his career in the role of Mickey Donovan... when you see well known actors on screen, many times it's hard separating the actor from the character... not here, there's no way anyone else plays this part.. every year he should get the 'best' award.. at some point he could leave the show.. and we'll not miss the loss of another as great as we will him..
..this show continues on with the quality exhibited so far, it'll go down as one of the best all-time
Pine Gap (2018)
..Pine Gap what..??
..ask an average American, what is Pine Gap.. most would not know a bit..
..this show tells an interesting story relevant to this day.. and does it with good acting and a carefully put together script.. and production values with few faults
..not a documentary.. just well done spy-drama.. with a pretty good balance between the basic spy story.. and the personal lives of the characters involved
..shows taking you to a place you've not been previously are rare in today's TV landscape... would be nice if this one were to stick around for a few seasons
Playing for Keeps (2018)
..this one can last.. keep them all together..
..seems no matter what these folks down under set their minds to doing... they most times pull it off exceptionally well..
..this production has been building steam since the opening episode.. and you know a show is really good, when you wished they had released the entire season to streaming... because waiting that week seems never ending..
..the entire cast is terrific.. and there has to be a special mention regarding Madeline West.. for any woman, not yet forty years old.. looking as amazing as she does.. having a solid acting career.. along with a family with six children.. (one son and five daughters.. ranging from a thirteen year-old down to twins that are four).. now that is absolutely incredible..
... it's a show that's good and getting better.. always fun to watch.. to the powers that be.. please don't let this be a one or two season and done.. let it run..
A Place to Call Home (2013)
.. it was good.. and it was time..
..so it's over.. it will be missed... it wasn't always great television, but for sure it was mostly all very good TV
..the cast was solid across the board, and all production values high
..when there is just sooo much not worth watching that seems to never end... to loose one that was looked forward to week to week leaves a void..
..Australia keeps putting out high-quality shows... keep 'em coming.. you have a most grateful North American audience thanking you..!!
800 Words (2015)
..agree with Erik
..is it gripping TV.. of course not.. but while there is sooo much lesser stuff still on-air.. this one could really have been given more life..
..for three seasons, they all made it entertaining and most all times wide-audience friendly.. would one or two more really have been so bad..
..best of luck guys.. and like Erik said.. you did deserve better from the powers-that-be..
..and how can you possibly cancel a show with Melina Vidler in it..
The Split (2018)
... deserves to run several seasons
....yea.. clue to it all would be the shag day before the wedding.. all that follows is just looking for a way out.. never mind it takes awhile and some kids..
..another very good UK series.. created-written-directed by women.. with a near-perfect cast & script
..does the Sundance TV & BBC One partnership give us more episodes.. good news, they both have said 'yes' to a second season next year... can't wait..
.and more than a few viewers were upset with her actions at the end of S1.. but to maintain reasonable interest for S2, how else was the story-line to go.. now there's numerous ways for the narrative to proceed
Sé quién eres (2017)
.. you are going to be quite pleased
..for this type of foreign language film.. the timing of subtitles is critical
..in a tense psychological drama.. when you need to read all the dialogue, and follow along in the movie.. that timing can make or break the experience.. no fear, like most all else with this production.. it is right on-the-mark
..all the cast does extremely good work.. the plot and script will lead you all over the place.. the actors are the ones keeping you engaged each episode..
..and she might be slight-of-body.. but she captures the entire screen every scene she's in... Susana Abaitua will have quite a career if she handles it right..
The Other Guy (2017)
..not much new ground, but well done overall
....it's a good show when considering all the genre..
.. the cast is solid, and they all do good work..
..if there's any gaps, it's the logic in getting away undiscovered for several years ..how and why, on either side, would and could this be possible
.. and major unanswered question from S1.. why'd it take her so long?
..they've inserted the major plot-line for season two ..here's looking forward that they get a chance to make use of it..
..two down... how many to go..??
..open-relationships are nothing new in films..
..and this crop of actors attempts their best in pulling it off..
..but only two episodes in and the cracks are beginning to show..
..it is one thing when the partners are single, or w/o children.. ..and another entirely when married, with grown children ..capable of understanding what mom n dad r up 2..
..let's see how this plays out through an entire season..
Tin Star (2017)
..it's very unusual to watch an entire first season of a production
..and you're still not knowing if you really like it or not..
..Roth is again worthwhile viewing.. as is the rest of the cast..
.. and the location is spectacular..
..it's the story-line getting darker and darker ..and not quite on the mark.. actually kinda foolish
..they have a second season to attempt recovery ..here's hoping they make the most of it
..it's the guns..
..we all desperately want to find new and different programing to get into watching...
..so this one comes along, and after a couple episodes you keep putting up with all the tired story-lines, cliched dialogue, and insecure acting.. ..but patience can only be stretched so thin.. and once you start forwarding through most of the episode(s), you come to the realization, it's well past time to pull the plug..
..truly it's incredible it got past the first season's episodes... gotta be the guns..
the starting promise didn't hold..
..season one, with the likes of Thorton, Hurt, Bello, Thirlby, and Parker helped make that season worth watching.. the second season, absent most all those names, just doesn't hold up in similar fashion..
the secondary players are all good, but they were all already part of S1, adding and complementing the high profile names.. without them, their absence is just too much to overcome..
and while there was kinda a 'Goliath' factor in S1.. S2 seriously lacked any... and without a real good villain, the three-four lesser ones just didn't measure up to carry story-line weight...
Jack Ryan (2018)
.. you wait for it to get better.. it doesn't
..it's a huge disappointment when the best thing you can say about a production refer to the locations..
.... the story-line is basic.. the script unmemorable.. casting suspect.. acting mediocre..
..being highly hyped and anticipated.. a full letdown..
..the look on the lead's face for most of the entire series sums it all up... vacant
Sharp Objects (2018)
... coda extremely helpful
..a show you are going to have to watch..
..then read a couple finale reviews..
..then go back and watch the ending again.. through ALL the credits
..one review said that final hour is one of the best you'll come across.. ever ..unquestionably so, and should you have picked up on all of it.. the first time round.. your powers of observation are VERY impressive..
The Affair (2014)
..she got under their skin.. and rightfully so..!!
Taking her out of the game after S4.. pretty much has ended it, and they should have made it the series finale. But they all always want to get S5 in the can.
Sure, S5 will in all likelihood be well done, but removing one of the two main characters it was always all about, just screams..'The End.'
It appeared at the final several episodes they were shooting a setup of what would be a longer running series. With an ending that is abrupt, awkward, and unsatisfying.. yet the biggest problem with these kinds of productions, are the weak story-lines and writing. Without these main parts, there's a big hole to fill by just design & production, which negatively impacts character development, and work of the actors.
As for the acting, it overall was passable. The cast for the most part got the job done, in light of the hindrance concerning the material given to work with. It's a cast of characters that do not draw you in.. just not being all that interesting, likable.. (or 'hateable' as the case may be). You just don't care much about what happens to them.
Unquestionably, she is the star, with a majority of weight falling on her shoulders. But lacking a well developed villainous character to foil against (till near the end), the show looses what well scripted and acted bad-guys would have brought to the production. And wearing a lot less makeup then in Castle, her beauty at times is still a distraction. Feeling more high-end fashion model, than rogue government agent fighting to overcome forces of evil. (Wearing that executive producer hat while starring not always being a compatible thing.)
Does it run many seasons.. the first one doesn't show lots of promise. But they're geting another, most likely on the strength of previous series goodwill that she brings to the table. Its proven here in this one that she can act drama, but unless the story-line and scripts improve, viewers are going to be dropping off through the course of the next season. If the audience she brings to this production are going to remain engaged, they'd need to see more smiles from her once in awhile... and the kid that's supposed to be hers, has to come up with other sides to his character than just forlorn looking little boy (and horror-film character). In addition, the boring dark sets with music to match, also need toning down or elimination.
Leaving most all the doors open for next season (obviously, the one including family expansion), there's numerous ways they can proceed and improve S2. Hope they do, but the basic stories being told need dramatic improvement.. and that's not that easy a turnaround.. we'll see.
.. you will not remember much.. but her.
You will watch the movie, and time will pass.. and the only thing you will remember is her.
It's what makes this film fantasy.. no way this woman could ever go years without men constantly being on her trail. There is not a scene of which she is on-screen that you are not drawn to watch only-her... and you really don't care much at all what she is saying.. you are just there captivated.
Band Aid (2017)
..she's just getting started..
..this woman has such insight..
..the world has just begun to peer into what she's letting them know..
.. she keeps continuing on.. it will be a fun-wonder.. .. just going where ever she wants to.. .. no knowing what comes next..
.. we all just get brought along for the great ride..
The Escape (2017)
...more than midlife crisis, when you want a completely new life
..yea, spoilers I guess.. not lots to spoil..
..she's got a husband offering only unemotional sex (unsatisfying for her) .. and wants her to be only a homemaker in addition.. ..she wants more intellectual & personal challenges, and she's very depressed .. (to her, he's uncaring, distant, boorish, and selfish-in-bed)
..so she runs off (on a one-way ticket) to Paris.. ..picks up a guy in a museum ..right off has what looks like satisfying sex with him.. .. then next morning discovers he's married ...she's married.. he's married.. both have kids ..he tells her it's complicated with his wife.. she says get lost
..she's depressed (again).. and guilt-ridden (this time for real) ..while having a mental breakdown out on the street ..she meets an older woman that rescues, mentors, and tells her ..to change completely her life.. try changing it with him (the husband) ...and if that doesn't work.. then change it w/o him (hint)
..hubby goes to meet her.. they hug w/o saying a word.. ..look on her face says.. I'm sorry, but we're over.. and they travel back
..next scene, she's in her own personally-decorated flat .. (across from Trattoria Mondello in London).. ..getting ready, and goes out (like on a date?) ..she's forlorn upon hearing children playing in a park nearby.. ..(seeing as she must have given hers up by now.. she thinks of them) ..then she gathers her composure, turns with head up, and walks briskly away.. the end
..so it seems, this is much more than your average mid-life crisis.. ..in that she definitely doesn't want to be married to him anymore.. ..'and' apparently doesn't want custody of the kids either..
..all actors are okay in their roles.. no big challenges, but satisfying work ..kinda interesting 100 minutes.. she's by far the best part of the film..
..most of this genre of films are about the man walking out on the family.. ..here the young wife & mother.. not being able to cope any longer ..needs to 'escape' by herself.. and now awaits her new life
..hey.. it's the movies.. .
L'amant double (2017)
.. just how many video libraries does this film find a place..
..the movie does not happen without Vacth..
..if you do a search for photos of her..
..you will come across dozens and dozens of images..
..looking as if she just stepped out from a scene in this film..
..it is her trademark 'look'..
..without a doubt a French film through and through.. ..even should you find her alluring.. ..this production will test the patience of most moviegoers..
it definitely takes two..
..the first season was alright.. it was not until the fifth episode of the second season that we totally appreciated how good it is, but only when they are both a part of the proceedings..
..it takes the talents of both Azaria and Peet to make this production work..
..those shows without her were just lacking her infectious spark.. ..without her it's like only half the team is on the field.. ..hope she sticks around.. if not, lots of folks won't be either..
..the future of online programming at its best..
..this is BBC crime-drama at its best...
..all the way through, right up to the very end..
..the writing and acting is perfect..
..this is a story having been told many times before.. ..but this time in a way that lets you feel is fresh..
..for a young actor only 25 years old.. ..she's done some substantial work.. check her credits.. ..she'd be a full-fledged star in this country.. ..better to stay put, and keep appearing in top notch work..
..bravo.. all round !!
..all the parts did good.. !!
...it's a good film... with a good script.. using solid actors..
..time spent watching a billion dollar blockbuster..
..or a great little film like Permission..
..we age.. we change.. ... .. more possibility of differences becoming substantial...
..this work shows lots of similar depth & quality ..as the Williams-Rogen movie.. Take This Waltz..
You Me Her (2016)
..good and gets better.. (till the very end)..
..this show just came along and blew up in the third season.. before that was good, but after a couple of episodes of S3.. it just found it's high grove, and right till the end of this current season, it is one of the best in many ways...
..came as a total surprise, as many of the best one's do...
..put a cast of complex good actors together... ..give 'em a worthwhile script.. ..with interplay between their characters to the right moderation.. ..kinda sounds simpler than it is.. (like most rom-coms) ..MUCH simpler than it is..
..no.. name others coming close.. ..great ensemble casts are few and far between ..it did falter a bit in the very last episode.. they could have had a much more interesting show, but decided to go with the boring traditional ending.. it was sooo much better than that for all of its three seasons..
hope it gets the opportunity to continue, although that final episode sure did feel like a wind up..
Fidelio, l'odyssée d'Alice (2014)
.. the mind of a male
..a woman playing the mind of a male... we're not totally sure till the very end.. then the look and the smiles...
.. it's a film cannot be watched just once.. especially since you're reading subtitles and jumping back to watch..
... the flow being chopped up every few seconds, so more gets filled in once knowing the dialogue, then being able to more easily watch..
..the actors and performances keep it together.. yet don't go beyond.. ..how many times you watch it, and the rating you give it, are probably both to change..
