The Happening (2008)
OK, first of all I am a fan of M Night Shyamalan. I have seen (and bought) all his films except Wide Awake (and I don't count Praying With Anger) and I've enjoyed all of them, even Lady In The Water despite the ridiculous scenarios.
I was really looking forward to this film since it had a really good setup. I watched this some hours ago with a friend of mine who also watched the last two Shyamalan films at the theater with me.
As I watched the film, when it got to the midway point, I started feeling fidgety. Not like I was uncomfortable in the seat but just... the acting and the dialog really wasn't good. But it wasn't as bad as nails on a chalkboard just knowingly unpleasant yet not damaging to the eyes and ears (if that made sense).
Despite the acting and dialog, the opening was pretty interesting. Seeing all those people fall off the building was KINDA cool.
Now I know that when it comes to Mr Shyamalan, there's always talk of the T word which I will try to avoid saying here. Honestly, I didn't care if there was going be one. All I wanted was it to be entertaining.
I didn't feel any suspense in the film until well in the last half when it almost seemed to get good at the isolated house but when the end credits came up I never got relieved of the suspense so I was left hanging. Also I didn't really get the ending until my friend explained to me when we left, after which I eventually got it.
And visually speaking, this hardly looked like a M Night Shyamalan film. OK the scene where a car smashes into a tree followed by a character getting out, sitting on the road and cutting himself with the glass in the same take was cool but overall, it looked like someone else was making it.
So overall, the film was a real disappointment and not what I was hoping for. But it's definitely NOT the worst movie ever, as I've seen far more terrible films that literally made my eyes and ears bleed.
Maybe if I see it again when I buy it on DVD and try looking at it in a different perspective maybe things might be interesting. Why would I buy it? Because I'm a film nerd and I like to have collections.
Oh well, at least I'm still looking forward at the Avatar The Last Airbender adaptation...
P.S. This is MY opinion. You can agree or not, that's your choice. Respect mine and I'll respect yours.
