Kinds should watch it even today in 2019
11 June 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"Beauty and the Beast" (1991) is a great Disney classic which should be seen by youngest ones even today. It has great music, timeless story, good writing and a heart in a right place.

Overall, there isn't really much to say more about this movie - its a classic and deserves all praises. Good movie overall.

Roma (2018)
8/10
Great craftsmanship but a bit hard to get into
9 June 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

I enjoyed "Roma" (2018) for a few things - superb directing and amazing cinematography as well as very good central performance - those are highlights of the entire movie. So is it enough to call it great movie? On one hand, pure craftsmanship - "Roma" sure is a great movie, but its story wasn't that much involving for me to be honest. It was a bit hard to get into it, because i did not relate to a main character, nor her life, nor her struggles (except the ones that were universal).

Overall, "Roma" can be a difficult movie to watch on some boring evening because of a story which is obviously biographical, based on a memories of a master movie maker Alfonso Cuarón - one of my favorite. On the other hand this movie is so well done that i kinda involved me, despite that main character and a world she lived in were not relevant for me. Its a good movie to see it once mainly because of phenomenal cinematography and directing.

Chernobyl (2019)

Probably the most authentic and raw series I've ever seen
8 June 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

After seeing all 5 episodes of "Chernobyl" i can safely say - this has to be the most authentic and raw series I've probably ever seen, and i saw many of them. Th story itself while was pretty well known by myself, but not that much - it kept me on the edge of my seat during whole 5 brutal, authentic and as real as possible episodes. I'm so proud right now that "Chernobyl" was actually filmed in my county Lithuania, most of it at our decommissioned plant in Visaginas and our capital Vilnius. I heard about this thing being filmed a bit back then, and i thought "nice, some known but not to much actors doing some show about even which kinda no one cares about these days". After seeing this show i can only say - "Chernobyl" is a masterpiece of raw and authenticity.

Overall, "Chernobyl" is a series in which you won't find all "popular" ingredients of series of these days - superheroes, twists, mystery, love and etc. What you get in "Chernobyl" is a pure 100% real take on a devastating and brutal story as it was - noting hidden, 100% real. It is as good small cinema as it can be.

High Life (2018)
5/10
Tedious and boring
1 June 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"High Life" (2019) was very tedious and boring movie. It very slowly paced, and that is not a problem - the problem is that it shows a story which is difficult to understand and even more difficult to care about. Directing was pretty poor because at the running time 1 h 42 min this movie dragged beyond beliefs - i managed to watch the entire thing in like 6 or 7 times - it is that poor. Even Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche - two actors which i really like were wasted in this mess.

Overall, "High Life" is not a terrible movie, but its pretty close. It tries to tell an interesting story, but does this so poorly that i can not recommend this flick to anyone.

Blow Out (1981)
7/10
Directing job was the best part of this movie
29 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"Blow Out" (1981) wasn't as great as i thought it will be after reading its premise. I was expecting a great, small and forgotten thriller, because i have never heard about this movie, which was actually directed back in 1981 by a legendary Brian De Palma which movies i really like.

"Blow Out" has a descent story, a nice acting, OK script but its not a really great thriller because most of the movie it simply lacked - thrills. The ending sequence was good, kinda reminded me of directors other jobs he doen years after this movie.

Overall, "Blow Out's" best thing i think was Brian De Palma. From a desent but not that memorable story of "who and how dunnit" he made some scenes that truly work, especially the very intense ending, but even that one had some flaws. Overall, a not bad thriller to see it once, but nothing that memorable.

Chernobyl: The Happiness of All Mankind (2019)
Season 1, Episode 4

It hardly gets better (and more real) then this
29 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"The Happiness of All Mankind" - the 4th episode of a new brilliant and just might be the most raw and realistic series i have ever seen "Chernobyl" delivered everything that 3 previous episodes did - incomparable realism and grittiness to the time, situation, people, regime and life as it was. Barely ever have i witnessed more raw and realistic depict of the events. Any sort.

Overall, with only 1 episode left now, its not a question of how it will end, as it not what matters to me. This is history we are watching, not some fake stuff. But it is done in so brutally realistic way that it kinda blows my mind.

Great graphics and story but to linear
27 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus" (2017) is a better game then its predecessors, and those where pretty good. This one has better story and storytelling but hey, you don't play "Wolfenstein" for great storytelling - you do it for shooting and some more shooting. And on that this game is very good. There are plenty of guns, and even more plenty perks for you to unlock them all. But for my taste this franchise is a bit to linear - i prefer more open worlds and exploration.

Overall, "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus" is a highly solid shooter with cool story and good storytelling. It features great game play and its only downsize is that it was to linear for my taste.

The End. Thank you HBO for the memories
20 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"The Iron Throne", THE last episode of "Game of Thrones" wasn't the best episode of them all, but it had it great moments. Actually i highly enjoyed first 43 minutes of it very highly - great cinematography, mood, music and directing - it was all there where it left us in "The Bells" (probably my favorite episode of them all). And then the ending came. And i won't spoil anything but i will say it was surprising for me a bit, so say the least - didn't expected that. It was kinda logical conclusion of the events this show brought us to.

Anyway, whether you liked it or not (and from 4,7 IMDB rating i see that you didn't), the show has finally ended. I wasn't the biggest fan of it, yet i highly enjoyed it. First 4 seasons were brilliant in my opinion, and last 4 season stared to be a bit predictable and to "Hollywood'sh". What this last season needed the most is more episodes - not more battles but episodes that would have fleshed out situation we were into and actions some main characters took.

Last thing - no matter how did it ended - i highly enjoyed the show. Thank you very much HBO for an amazing ride and memories, plenty of them, which will stick with me till the end. Great show.

Chernobyl: Please Remain Calm (2019)
Season 1, Episode 2

Perfect
18 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

I won't call second episode of "Chernobyl", named "Please Remain Calm" a masterpiece only because i think masterpiece should only apply to a thing of fiction. "Chernobyl", a new brilliant HBO series is anything but fiction. If you are looking for a new HBO replacement of "Game Of Thrones" with blood, love, sex, sci-fi and etc with some plot twists - "Chernobyl" is as far place as you can search for.

I was born in Lithuania, 788 km (489 miles) from Chernobyl, 5 months before the explosion. I remember my mom told me years later of how she kept me inside of our house when news broke out about the incident broke.

Overall, "Chernobyl" is a simply perfect series for those who are looking to see a truth about true event. Everything, and i mean everything in this show speaks true to its time, place, regime and people. Its a damn perfect series so far.

Not really my subject, but the movie was really entertaining
16 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"Vice" (2018) is a very entertaining movie even if i'm not really into this subject. It had great performances all around as well as very involving and entertaining script and directing. Make up was definitely Oscar worthy as it transformed so many familiar faces into well known other familiar faces - well you got the idea.

Overall, i was really entertained for a whole 2 h 5 min watching "Vice". Its superbly made and acted and even if you are not really into this subject, its highly entertaining.

Great film
13 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

I enjoyed "Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta" (1986) more then i thought i will be. I mean i really like this legendary directors movies (and only kinda disliked one from all of them), but i didn't think that "Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta" will be such a good movie. It has really good story - and involving, mysterious and superbly told. Script was very good as well.

Overall, "Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta" is a great movie for children and big ones. It has great story and storytelling.

One of the best episodes this show has ever pulled of
13 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"The Bells", 5th episode of currently the most hated season by its fan of "Game of Thrones" just might have been one of the best this show has ever pulled of. Many, many plots have came to an end here, and i loved every single one of them. And how surprisingly it turn out to be - for me personally, who does not theorize everything and just enjoys this show for what it is. Visuals of this episode were outstanding to say the least and direction was superb.

Overall, i highly enjoyed "The Bells" - one of the very best episodes of this show. Amazingly staged, emotional and brutal - this is the highlight of this season. Can't wait for last episode.

The Prodigy (2019)

What a pleasant surprise at the movies
10 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

So i just came back from a premier of "The Prodigy" (2019). I haven't seen any trailers of it, haven't read synopsis, no critics or IMDb before seeing it - only a poster from which i knew this is going to be a horror thriller with actress i really liked from that women prison drama / comedy - that is it. And i can tell you, without any spoilers - "The Prodigy" isn't a straightforward horror movie, but a thriller with some scare jump moments. And what an effective little bloody good thriller this is! It was superbly directed, superbly acted by Taylor Schilling and even more by a little Jackson Robert Scott who stole every scene in my opinion - his acting was one of the few reason that "The Prodigy" actually was one of the very best thrillers i saw in a movie theaters in some time now - he was simply brilliant.

Overall, i really enjoyed seeing "The Prodigy" without any expectations. It has very good (kinda original) story, good script, very good acting and directing. This is one of the best thrillers in a recent memory.

Entertaining
8 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

Hey haters and lovers of this show!

As basically there aren't many (any?) who simply enjoy this show for what it is (except me of course!) at this point, i would say simple as it is - this episode was entertaining 1 h 16 min that i spent watching TV. And what a great TV it is (still!). Amazing production design, great acting, very solid directing and writing..., well writing isn't this shows strong point anymore, unfortunately. I do agree that this show started to be more and more predictable starting season 5, and first 4 seasons, well, no one will probably ever top first 4 season of this show but hey - if you are one of the few people still left on this planet at this point who can simply enjoy a still great show for what it is, and not for what it must have been in everyone head and imagination - you will be entertained watching this episode, as every single before. Because the story itself can't be more epic, production values are as great as they can be and a craftsmanship of this show itself is superb, still, as usual. So stop hating, and enjoy for what it is - a really good entertainment.

Downfall (2004)

Great war movie
8 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"Der Untergang" (2004) is in my opinion one of the most memorable WW2 movies ever made. And this is because of 3 but crucial parts, in opinion - great directing and writing and mesmerizing performance by a great Bruno Ganz, who made for me personally the best depiction of Adolf Hitler on any media, in my opinion. As the movie is basically telling a story of the last days of Hitler and those surrounding him in a bunker, it also later moves into streets of Berlin, were Soviet soldiers came.

Overall, "Der Untergang" is a great war film, made by Germans , telling their story. Movie does not preach, it just shows you a history. Great film.

Very dissapointing
6 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

On simple movie making terms "Welcome to Marwen" (2018) did succeed. It is pretty original of how it tells the story, is OK acted and kinda solidly directed and photographed. Special effects were also very interesting. At the running time 1 h 50 min this movie barely dragged. So why is a very average score for it? Because the story it tells is kinda to big for this movie, or to small. I didn't care at all what was going on with a main character in a real world and even less (zero!) of what was happening with him in Marwen. This is not a good thing because this movie was suppose to be an inspirational story but at the end it was just a bizarre one - a hard drunkard gets beaten for talking nonsense, and wearing a women shoes (i kid you not...).

Overall, "Welcome to Marwen" could have been / should have been great as it was directed by a visionary (still) and a great director, but its just failed at the end. Its this directors worst film to date, in my opinion.

Slow, but good and very real
4 May 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"The Rider" (2017) is slow burning character study drama set in present day west. Movie felt to me very real because characters weren't just a fiction - they were either real people either based on real people and their lives. I thought that acting was very solid by everyone and directing as well as script were very good as well. "The Rider" is a very slow burning drama without any action, but its a good one.

Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
Season 8, Episode 3

Except for terrible lighting design, this episode was truly amazing
30 April 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"The Long Night", 3rd episode of the final season was a groundbreaking in term of story. No further spoiler - but it closed in my opinion on one of the biggest question. And the most intriguing plot line for me to be honest as well. The episode was pretty spectacular, but only if you could see what was even happening on the screen because of terrible lighting design - i do understand that by shooting in a nighttime (seemingly), creators saves a lot of costs on special effects (this is an old as the movies goes thing), but still i couldn't fuxxxxing see a damn thing during first like ~30 min. Later it was better because of mostly interior sets.

Overall, i did enjoying this episode very much despite so very dark cinematography. It closed one huge chapter of the story and wanted to see me how it all end. Great episode all in all.

29 April 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms", 2nd episode of the last season 8th was as good as the first one. They both were slow, "no action" but dialog driven episodes - not the worst, not the best. But the ending of this episode lead us finally to a battle we all been waiting for. Lets see how it will turn out.

Big, funny, entertaining and sad for those who are invested into this series
25 April 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"Avengers: Endgame" (2019) was funny, a bit sad, very entertaining, spectacular and maybe a bit too long for me personally. I did enjoy this movie from start till finish though, and while its not my personal favorite from them all, this was a very solid movie in my opinion (and i'm not a huge fan of these movies to start with, so tears haven't been found during my watch).

Overall, "Avengers: Endgame" brings half of the Hollywood famous actors into one big, entertaining 3 hours (!) long escapism. At the end i enjoyed this film much more then i thought i will be.

Great thriller
24 April 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"The Day of the Jackal" (1973) is a great thriller. Done in almost documentary style, this movie was involving for me from the first minute till credits start rolling. Its a very skillfully made thriller shown from both sides - from a hit man and his pursuers. The mystery of the hit man itself was other very interesting thing, and i loved the they kept a secret till end without any revelation - it feels more menacing.

Overall, "The Day of the Jackal" (1973) is a superb thriller that hold up highly well even now first time seeing it in 2019. A great thriller.

Great movie

Greetings from Lithuania.

"The Favourite" (2018) is a period costume drama for those who usually do not like period costume dramas. The script, directing and acting were outstanding. The movie, at running time 1 h 55 min never dragged and was involving from start till finish. And the ending, the very last long scene was truly remarkable.

Overall, "The Favourite" is a superb period piece. Its not as good as "Barry Lyndon", but i enjoyed it more then any other costume period drama in recent memory.

Poor horror flick
19 April 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

I didn't expect much from "The Curse of La Llorona" (2019) to be honest from the get go. I just wanted to watch some at least OK horror movie on a Friday evening. For around 30 minutes or so this movie succeeded in being an pretty OK horror flick for a dull Friday evening in a movie theater, but eventually this movie did not turn our to be any good. It wasn't scary - and that pretty much says everything you want to know about horror movie. The flick also did not had any sense of humor - its not that is necessary, but for this particular movie it could have helped at least. Acting wasn't anything special to say the least, yet i liked Linda Cardellini's performance - she is the best thing about this boring and not scary flick.

Overall, "The Curse of La Llorona" (what a name!) is not scary, not thrilling and not involving movie. Even at running time 1 h 29 min it dragged and was a bit funny in a moments when it shouldn't have been. A poor flick overall.

Good drama
16 April 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"If Beale Street Could Talk" (2018) is a good movie drama. It has a good story, great acting and very solid writing as well as directing. If i would draw a comparison with "Moonlight" (2016), i would say i liked "Moonlight" much more - that was a superb, amazing film while "Beale Street" is a good one. The only downside of it i think were scenes that were repetitive - literally - i do not need same scene to be shown multiple times for me to remember it.

Overall, "If Beale Street Could Talk" is a good slow burning drama with all the core elements in a right places for a movie to succeed.

Not Eastwoods best, but its worth your time
14 April 2019
Greetings from Lithuania.

"The Mule" (2018) wasn't Eastwoods best that is for sure, but its not an issue because this was a very solid movie. It was very well shoot and directed as well as acted. The story was good, pacing was also good - at running time 1 h 49 min this movie never dragged.

Overall, "The Mule" is a good, slow movie. Its excellently paced and if you want to see a true living legend still doing his thing - look no other else.
