WALL·E (2008)
Definitely did it for me! - An Instant Classic from Pixar
After Finding Nemo I thought Pixar will never make another movie that will touch me as much as Marvin and Dory duo did. Wall-e is their successor, no question. Neither Incredibles, Cars or Ratatouille did it for me, but this year Wall-e has make a huge impact, not only for their amazing "out of this world" animation skills but also for the subtle but yet well made environmental message and the great ability of telling a meaningful story with few words.
As soon as you see Wall-e on the screen, you can't help your self of being all cheering and caring for this little fellow. Great work developing this character and giving a heart and soul to a metal rubbish carrier. Just amazing!. The interaction Wall-e/ Eve was very cute and sad at the same time and the whole story keeps you laughing and entertained the whole 98 minutes.
One of the great things about Finding Nemo which I think was the key of their success, was the fact that you actually care for the characters (especially no being humans) and that chemistry between the 2 very different main characters transcend beyond a clichéd romance. This is the case of Wall-e, a lonely character that for the first time in his robotic life he finally found a true friend. A simple but very profound story that works perfectly and is attractive, not only to kids but adults too.
Wall-e is certainly a big triumph for Pixar and easily an instant classic of animation. I can see a season full of awards for Disney this year ahead.
Australia (2008)
Cold Mountain set in Australia! I have seen it all before. Disappointing
I have the chance to go the preview screening of Australia here in the UK this week and I have to say that I was maybe expecting a bit more from the movie, having Nicole Kidman attached with her Moulin Rouge director and being set in her home country. But I found it to be (in few words) "a very clichéd Cold Mountain set in Australia" Yes! You can say you have seen it all before: the stereotype character, the cheesy lines, the little aborigine kid, the bad guy, the high class lady, the handsome working class saviour and even the music!! (Come on!) I have to said, I was very surprise finally seeing Nicole Kidman attach to this project and realised in the first 4 minutes of the movie that she was doing a British character! And British accent! I found it bit ironic
and put me down immediately.
I wasn't certainly shock at all when Australia didn't get any nods for the Golden Globles last week and surely neither will get any Oscar nominations (at least in the main categories). I am more surprise with some comments saying this film is Oscar worthy, when is the definitely not!.
Nicole Kidman is definitely not in her best, giving us a plane and very clichéd performance of a cold high-class widow that have to face a ruffed time, find love and a new meaning for her life, becoming an inspiration to everyone (again Cold Mountain anyone?), Hugh Jackman looks at his best in this movie but unfortunately you don't get Oscar's Awards for being the best looking leading man in a movie (he will for sure win all the statues!), and yeah, he seems like he tried his best to gives us a believable performance even when the script and the character has the name of Russell Crowe written all over it. I found that Jackman did a decent job but certainly not Oscar worthy. Same with rest of the cast.
Having said that, I found Australia being extremely long running, extremely predictable and extremely clichéd. Mr Baz Luhrmann (not big fan) tried to give us what it could be a masterpiece for the Australian cinema but he certainly is not Peter Jackson! and seeing back Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet you can see that the man tried too much to be original and quirky but end up looking all very theatrical and cheap.
I would recommend to go and see Australia and enjoy the marvellous body of Hugh Jackman that I am sure is the only good thing you will remember in this movie! Mr. Jackman worth every penny of your ticket!
Freddie (2005)
Prinze Jr trying to be Joey??
Don't get me wrong i like Freddie Prinze Jr, I'm think he is kinda cute, and have a couple of nice roles in movies. But i still don't get him as a funny guy...oh wait: a latino funny rich chef guy! since when Freddy is Latino?, i didn't know that...anyway...the point is the series is not that bad, i admit i am very surprise to see Austin Green playing comedy very nicely...and the girls on the show are quite good too. But Freddie as a leading role...he is trying so hard to be like Matt Le Blanc in Joey, and he looks a little bit like him too ( well without some extra pounds..sorry Matty), you can see he is trying to much to be funny...or at least is what i see. Anyway watch the series, and good luck i know Fred is a nice guy, and he deserve success, lets see if with a full season i can change my mind...
