Twin Peaks (1990)
whyd it have to go downhill :-(
the first series of twin peaks is probably the greatest thing ever filmed (that first 7 episodes or so, from pilot to cooper getting shot my josie) but after that it spiralled totally out of control, i think if it had been helmed tighter by David lynch and perhaps kept to a 14 episode run it would have been the one off greatest TV production ever. instead it starts of great, promises so much but delivers a watered down wishy washy run of far too many episodes, i mean by th end of it laura palmer is only seen in the end credits, until the last episode that is (thats deliciously creepy that one, ) id like to re-edit that series into a tighter self contained serial about laura palmers murder and nothing more. but at least the first series is phenomenal, and what about angelo badalamentis music.
blacker than the sky on a moonless night :-)
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!classic trek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think this movie needs watched twice, the first time i watched it i thought "what have they done?" it was like someone was trying to make a star trek film far too stylish, kind of like the matrix meets the new James bond movies. I wasn't impressed. But being a huge fan of star trek not because of sci-fi, but because i love what the essence of star trek is "to boldly go where no one has gone before", i thought id watch the DVD again before i gave it back to my mate, if you really loved something so much once in your life you can never totally forget it. Anyway the second time i watched it i thought it was great, yes its made in a slightly different way to all other movies, but all the elements of what makes for classic trek is there: action, adventure, bonding, the sense of the family and of caring about each other, loss and sacrifice and most importantly a chance for a new future. I really really do think the mixed reviews for this movie are unjust, its easily the best with the next generation crew in it (i know first contact is brilliant, but on the other hand why bring back the Borg and have a time travel story? things that have been done to death on star trek. its hardly going where no one has gone before.) so yes nemesis is great, a great great set of actors assembled together for one last time, in a story which pushes them and there ship to the limit, sees a self sacrifice in the finest "human" spirit and the chance for new adventure in future. I think that they should continue to make star trek movies but maybe only every milestone such as every 10 years when its a 40th or 50th anniversary and each time introduce new characters, new stories etc and show that the adventure does in fact continue. i mean i never watched much ds9, no voyager and haven't even seen enterprise, you can get diluted with too much of something, but star trek should never go away. I think a well made intelligent/action adventure movie every few years should keep the franchise growing, and more importantly keep gene Roddenberry's vision and spirit alive. So to sum up, watch nemesis again and think of the cage or where no man has gone before, think classic trek but with modern edge. if nemesis is the last star trek film then i personally think its finished on a high.
live long and prosper! :-) PS - I'm gonna watch my favourite star-trek movie tonight, st3 the search for Spock, i think the best ones are the ones that show the closeness of the family and what they'll do for each other against a back drop of space, thats why st3 and nemesis are the 2 best movies respectively between the 2 crews
