Ricky's Room (1999)
Rickys Room? More like AWESOME ROOM.
Ricky's Room is the quintessential children's program of my generation! The writing is masterful. The set is breathtaking (seriously, how did they build this thing?). The music is up there with John William's score to Star Wars. The kids are surprisingly wonderful actors with real futures in show business. The portrayal of Harold the Hippo is one of the greatest performances in TV, equal only to Bryan Cranston's Walter White. Ricky is one of the deepest characters in all of media. His nuanced representation of George W. Bush at a time when the war on terror was at its peak was fantastic and reminiscent of Marlon Brando's portrayal of Don Corleone. If I was to have one gripe with the show, it would be Niki's performance. I just don't believe her as a rhino. But the incredible story about life, death, religion, politics, family, war and crime more than makes up for it. Ricky's Matrix-like story arc in Season 3 was especially intriguing. The bottom line is, if you like great performances, writing, production value and a deep and interesting story in your TV shows, you need to watch Ricky's Room.
SPOILER ALERT!*!*!*!*!: The plot twist where it turns out Ricky was behind the murder of John Lennon was incredible. I was not expecting that in the slightest and it made for a great series finale.
