Mother and Child (2009)
A Wonderful Film!
In a year where Annette Bening is winning awards for "The Kids Are Alright", she is just as deserving for this brilliant little unseen gem. Naomi Watts, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kerry Washington are stellar as well. The story of three woman all on the journey of motherhood, is moving, touching, well acted, thought provoking, and superbly directed. It is too bad the distribution was weak and that this film was lost in shuffle. As the viewer you are taken inside their lives and given insight into how we are all shaped by the experiences we have, regardless of the circumstances. The film is well balanced, transitioning back and forth with the three female leads. Annette, Naomi, and Kerry all have many moments to shine given the complex developed script and own their parts. This film is an amazing character study and makes you think about life, love, and relationships.
Jessica and Tammy Deliver Standout Performances
Why this remake which is far more truthful than the 1976 MOW starring Sally Field didn't get more attention is a mystery? Lifetime has aired it a few times in 2010, since CBS failed give it a huge MOW, when it was finally aired in the US. Hopefully it will be released on DVD soon, if you have the chance it is worth watching. Tammy Blanchard and Jessica Lange deserved Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG, nominations for this gem. Both actresses bring emotional depth and humility to the characters they are playing. The subject matter is heart breaking, as the story unfolds and you learn all that Sybil has survived in her past. Her life is unfolding and she finally meets someone who can help. As they begin treatment, both women grow and face their deepest fears. Bringing darkness to the light and helping make history.
The Island (1998)
Kirkland is the bomb!
It is too bad this film has never seen the light of day, save a small run on Dish Network.
The premise is great, JFK and Marilyn in exile together since 1963 on a desert island, where only the CIA delivers supplies.
Kirkland is standout as Marilyn Monroe and surely would have got some awards consideration for her amazing work if the film had been released properly.
Michael Murphy is great as JFK. A real treat for Baby Boomers and Marilyn fans.
Murphy and Kirkland have great chemistry and go at it with much passion in several scenes of heated dialogue and built of tension of the last 30 years.
Rumor has it Kirkland is going to distribute a copies with her Autobiography currently under way.
Kirkland was robbed
Sally Kirkland is standout in this character driven drama. This film is what great films are all about, they tell great stories about people and get you thinking.
The script is fantastic and Kirkland is heart breaking. The film should be far better remembered than it is and film schools should use it in class.
Kirkland should have won the Oscar and had the film had better distribution and some more money behind it, she would have, but CHER had a huge campaign behind her for Moonstruck.
Kirkland is under rated and her two best roles since ANNA have failed to get distribution:
What's up Scarlet and Norma Jean, Jack, and Me.
A must see for film fans and those who love actors...
