Yellowjackets: Storytelling (2023)
And I had such high hopes
The season as a whole has been an utter disappointment. I can't help but feel that this show has succumbed to the one-season-hit-wonder syndrome we see so often. They creators may have a 5 season arc but many of us won't stick around to see it if the writing continues to be this shambolic.
This episode is just a mess. The writing, direction, and especially the editing is mediocre at best. It's obvious that the finale was supposed to be episode 10 that was poorly combined into episode 9. The deaths made little no sense and the resolve made even less. The actors were as good as they could be. The number of plot holes is just embarrassing. Did the writers actually read their script? They sure as hell didn't map it out, that much is painfully obvious.
Just to throw one out there, how is Coach still alive? He hasn't eaten anything other than belt soup in over a month yet he is out hiking in the dark back and forth to the tree without a problem.
Please, please don't fall into the trap of posing 5 new questions/conflicts/dilemmas every time 1 is resolved. That is the hallmark of poor writing. And for the love of God, do not bring back the Adam Martin thread. You had your chance to delve deeper into the mystery behind his infatuation with Shauna and you blew it. Let it die and focus on your strengths, the 1996 timeline.
I won't give up on this show just yet. Every show can have a bad season, IMO Breaking Bad had 2. That being said, if we see a smoke monster.... I'm out.
The Boys: The Instant White-Hot Wild (2022)
Sad ending of a once inspiring show
What an epic disappointment. The Boys has officially jumped the shark. The writer's lack of creativity has become just a bore. The spectacle of the series has faded and all we are left with are predictable plot lines and tired and over used tropes. Retire the show in season 4, you blew what load you had left in Herogasm.
Uncharted (2022)
So, so, so bad
How do you mess this up so badly? You have 4 tried and tested storylines that you could have easily adapted to the screen. But no, just take a few elements out of a few and mash them together but screw with the characters enough so they barely resemble the source material. This movie was a travesty. How the hell did PS and Naughty Dog let this crap get made.
Yellowstone: I Want to Be Him (2021)
Please, tell me what I'm missing
This episode was, by far, the most poorly written of them all. And there has far more bad writing than good in this show's 4 seasons. The writers are incapable of sticking with their own plot lines! The female main characters are the stereotypical crazy women or raging psychopaths. This nothing more than the Sopranos meets a telenovella set in Montana.
Red Notice (2021)
Dumb, filled with plot holes and lots of fun
While there is nothing you haven't seen in this film a thousand times before, it's still very entertaining if you watch it out of the corner of your eye while mindlessly scrolling through Instagram. Can we finally admit that Gal Gadot is a decidedly mediocre actress? Loved her in the first Wonder Woman, but since then.... 👎. Johnson and Reynolds are Johnson and Reynolds and nothing more.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Mediocrity at its finest
So many things wrong here.
This is not horror and it is not insightful or original. Long, slow, boring lectures combined with pseudo intellectual religious debate cast against relatively poor directing and mediocre acting for the most part. Hamish Linklater shines for the majority of it but most acting is just ok. The story is garbled and chock full of plot holes and cliches. In the end, the characters are victims of their own stupidity. And the show is a victim of its own attempted cleverness.
Malignant (2021)
If you watch it as a comedy, it's not terrible
Schlock B movie wannabe complete with plot hole filled story lines, atrociously bad acting, a monster/heroine that defies the laws of nature, and a horrific version of the Pixies 'where is my mind'. It's so bad it's actually funny in parts. Definitely not what you have come to expect from Mr Wan.
