Overlord (2018)

Historically Ignorant. Woefully So
31 August 2019
The military forces of the US were not ordered to integrate until 1948 by President Truman. And it would be quite some time after that when it would be completed. The scene of an Afro-American Non-Com ordering a white soldier is ludicrous. I just wonder why the Afro-American actors agreed to appear in this trash. I understand it if a Brother needs a job, but, Really?

Tatort (1970– )
As good if not better than most US crime shows
25 November 2018
Working my way through the Cologne series after watching the Kiel series on MHz. I especially like these series due to the pacing and stories. Moreover, I get a tour of different parts of Germany. If subtitles are not a drawback then I recommend Tatort. I kind of hope that MHz will show the really early ones from the 70s and 80s

The Bullwinkle Show (1959–1963)

Too grown-up for kiddies
21 October 2018
It's been over 55 years since I started to watch this show. I gotta say I enjoy this show more as an adult than I did as a child. I mean lines like: "meanwhile on Veronica Lake there sailed the Ruby Yacht of Omar Kayam" is just too much and wasted on kiddies.

Timely film.
11 August 2018
When this film came out I was reminded of my second semester of 7th grade at Horace Mann junior high in Colorado Springs 50 years ago. Martin Luther King was recently asssasinated. I'm sitting in class, home room, when this kid behind me said "they shot that nigger dead". Having just come from Los Angeles and an integrated school I was sad and shocked to hear him say that. Lee's film does a spot-on job of showing how stupid and dangerous racists are in this country. I also realized, later, that racism is learned and not something we're born with. The current administration is supporting these groups in an active way and this worries me. By the way, the fros and clothes were a delight to see.

Kabul Kitchen (2012–2017)

Waiting for season 3
7 June 2018
I just finished the first 2 seasons of Kaboul Kitchen. Got to say it's one of the best shows I've watched in a long time. Actually, I feel sorry for people who don't like subtitles. The scripts were top-notch. The acting was also. I know I'm a bit vague but trust me! I spend a lot of time watching foreign programs and this is one very fine program.

Gripping, but...
27 May 2018
I thought that this was one of the best shows I've watched in a long time. The characters are well drawn out and it seems that each episode bought a new twist. I never for sure knew who was who. I know this is a bit vague. My only quibble is that the subtitles are in a yellow font. Very difficult at times to read.

Dear White People (2017– )

Very, Very Funny. But maybe not if you are white.
29 April 2017
Last night I watched the first five episodes. There were moments where I howled with laughter. As an older white guy I won't pretend to totally understand the black experience of living in any country where you are a minority. Especially in the USA. Having said that I believe I can appreciate a good program such as DEAR WHITE PEOPLE. I found the casting spot-on. And let it be said this show isn't all about white and black but also about becoming an adult and dealing with love, straight and gay regardless of color. The characters are, for the most part young adults having just left mom and pop and going out into the adult world.

Alpha House (2013–2014)

Trudeau does have an agenda
24 October 2014
I'm now on the second season of "Alpha House" and it's as good if not better than the first. I noticed that some reviewers have said that the characters are Democrats playing Republicans but I don't think that is fair. I am old enough to remember when our political parties were not so beholding to outside money and that I had a sense that both parties were working in good faith. It's not that way now. Whatever, I enjoy this show because I see how it relates to how our politicians, GOP and Democrat, and the media work. But in a humorous vein. It's not overly cynical. I found myself admitting that I would vote for Biggs because he is reasonable. I believe that this is what Trudeau has in mind. The GOP has been taken over by right-wing extremist who answer only to big money, i.e. Koch Brothers. I hope it comes back for many seasons to come.

First satirical Movie ever done about a soldier's life in US Army Europe.
8 September 2004
I waited 3 years to see this film. According to the Daily Variety's review it was almost impossible to find a US distributor. I can see why. In this day and age of over-blown patriotism, "Buffalo Soldiers" is a hard sale to the general public. However, the film is a nice bit of satire and it doesn't try to be anything else. I spent 4 years in the US Army Europe during the 70's and believe me there were some very enterprising enlisted men and some dense non-coms and officers. Of course not like the characters in the film. The scene with the tank and the drugged out crew is horrible but great to watch. I can see why the US Army did not lend it's support to this film and I understand it. Why use tax-payers money for this? I am glad it came on cable so I could finally see it.
