Flesh and the Devil (1926)
The tragedy of Garbo's early dramas
In my humble opinion, Garbo's carrier in the USA at the beginning was disappointing, - as she said herself regarding The Temptress, she disliked this movie, and was right, she had taste. All 4 movies are not masterpieces : The Single Standard, The Temptress, The Mysterious lady, and Flesh and the Devil. You can save small aspects of them but the story line makes no sens (for example, she is marvelous with a mask in a garden, and she is a charm to see). But they were just market products, mixing together some ingredients that should earn success, like male heroism, exoticism, charm,... but since love begins abruptly in all, one can't follow why it takes place, what ties them together ; it lacks romantic intrigue, the idyll takes place very soon (for satisfying audience), and I guess the Temptress destroyed also the filmmaker's mind, her last victim.
The Imperial Hotel (1927) with Pola Negri shares some plot aspects with the Mysterious lady (1928), - the Russian / Austrian war context, the spy related subplot, the dreadful general, which suggest some derivation, but Imperial hotel is way better. Regarding her filmography, Greta Garbo preferred The Joyless street, by Pabst.
This film is utterly overrated, because of Garbo.
