Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
A good ending.
I approve. Good if rushed ending. One needs just a bit of imagination to fill in the blanks.
American Gods: The Secret of Spoons (2017)
Eight episodes is not enough! (Minor spoilers)
I loved the book. A lot. But this is not the book, this is just an interpretation of it, and as such it is all good.
I was surprised by the first episode, although I had eagerly awaited it. I liked it, despite some choices to cut parts of the story out. I must say that Shadow and Mr. Wednesday are spot on, actor-wise.
This episode, we get to see where the creators of this series wants to put their focus, and it looks like Bilquis and her sexuality driven existence will get all the graphical display it needs to hammer home how she works - completed with very happy male genitalia and all. Well, we get it now :)
The star of the second episode was Peter Stormare's Czernobog. He is always watchable, and he channels here a combination of his Russian MIR astronaut and his run as the devil from Constantine. Not someone you would want to meet. He sweats danger. Love it.
The episode started off a bit slow but halfway through it, it started to shine. How will they do this in 8 episodes when they use so much time to focus on packing boxes, shopping, and cleaning bathroom floors? Time will tell, and I'll be watching.
Legion: Chapter 4 (2017)
Strange for the sake of strangeness
The first episodes of this series were kind of interesting. It was a different take on the superhero - a deeply troubled man trying to find himself in a torrent of chaotic events.
We are now on Episode 4 and already the story begins to show serious cracks. Tired old tropes badly executed, like when someone asks a question it never gets answered, just ignored - over and over, and the Question is not even an interesting one to begin with. This is supposed to keep the mystery but in this case it gets old really fast. The way people talk and interact, even the supposedly sane ones..... that is not how people talk or act. Anyone remember the phrase "Save the cheerleader, save the world"? This is less interesting and thought provoking than "Heroes" were.
There is no logic to this episode. Just look at what happens at the end of the episode and you'll know of what I'm talking about.
This week we got a David Lynchian vibe but without the intelligence.
I'll sit the rest of the series out. There are so much better ways to spend 50 minutes than to waste it on Legion.
The West Wing: Two Cathedrals (2001)
The epitome of Good writing
Of the whole series, all seven seasons of it, this is the one that stands out from the crowd. West Wing was always about great storytelling, Aaron Sorkin is one of the most intelligent story writers out there, and here, at the end of a season, he gets to show all his prowess. All episodes that comes before this one had been building up to this crescendo, and what a final it is! Everything about this episode, everything, is perfection. Pacing, mood, camera, dialog, music, even the weather is perfect. All the characters do exactly what is needed. It is like watching a great opera unfold. It is, in a word, Perfect!
I have watched a lot of series in my days. I mention this, not that it will give me any credibility since you do not know me, because I think I have some knowledge about what woks and what does not. There are a few series out there that have that special Something.... 'The Wire', 'House', Boardwalk Empire, '24' to some extent, 'Six Feet Under', 'Dexter', 'American Horror Story', all those had something that aspired to be Great, but nothing comes close to West Wing.
Is this the Best Episode Ever! fro0m the West Wing? Well, it sure does come really close.
Is it the Best Episode Ever, any category? It might just be actually.
West Wing had a lot going for it, no matter what political persuasion you belong to (I am not American, just a Swede). Great writing, great characters, engaging stories, fantastic camera-work, and seriously good music and audio.
I HAVE to give this 10/10.
Do NOT watch this episode as a Stand Alone! See all the episodes that comes before this and you will find this one so much more rewarding.
