White Zombie (1932)
What happened to the Halperin Bros.?
You often here about one-hit wonders in pop music history. The Halperin Brothers are the B-movie equivalent. Not much of note followed their whelming of this terrific thriller from the '30's Golden Age of Horror. This film featured effective use of double-exposure edits and split-screens to provide an impressionist tableau that serves the fantastic storyline. One minor caveat is that, due to the Public Domain quality of many prints, it takes extra concentration to interpret Bela Lugosi's Hungarian/pseudo-Creole accent as Murder Legendre. Memorable quote: "For you, my friend, they are the angels ov death!" Definitely holds up as an ideal Midnight Creature-Feature programmer.
