on par with Jurassic Park 3
In a lot of ways the movie starts like Jurassic Park 2. A lot of parallels in the story. but it adds a lot of new stuff to the story so its not too close to the second movie. But although i really liked Jurassic Park 2, this one here has a lot of problems. A lot of people make really stupid decisions that are not rational. decisions that are so stupid, you only do them because it was written in the script. no sane human being would do that. and those bad decisions just to move the story forward really destroys the movie in many ways. otherwise the special effects are great and you get some decent action here and there. its fun to watch once and never again.
The Dragon Prince (2018)
Great show. you should really try it
I want to keep this short. what really stands out in the show is that the "bad guys" are not necessarily bad. they make bad choices and use dark methods to achieve their goals. but they are not (yet?) really evil and rotten to the core.
then there is real character development for most characters. great animation. great story. it could very well be the background story of an epic anime video game. so overall its definitely worth giving it a try.
pretty good but still lots of flaws
Well, i don't remember too much of the original show but in general the show is pretty good. i like the changes they did to the show. a continuous story that makes more sense than the original. so the show has a solid base to build on. the things i don't like is the drawing style. in the original they looked like real adults and had its own style. but now it looks more like an anime and all characters are teenagers. its not a bad style but doesn't feel right somehow. and the show isn't dark enough. i'm sure the original was much darker than this one. its slightly too colorful for my taste.
one of the highlights is probably the relationship between She-Ra and Catra. I really like how they handled this. its not all black and white, good and evil. its more complex. i'm actually rooting for catra :-)
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)
One of the best in 2018
You take a couple of people, all with different agendas and put them in a hotel. then everything goes wrong. thats basically the story of the movie and a really great one! of course the movie plays with the viewer. stuff is happening and of course you expect certain things to happen next and BOOM. something totally unexpected happens... Thats something you don't see very often in movies. The movie plays right in Tarantinos League. The Story is well written. great music. great scenes. great editing. definitely something too see more than once.
A solid 8 from me after first viewing!
Still great in 2018
This is one of the rare occasions where i can review a movie that i've seen as a kid at the movies almost 30 years ago. it made a big impression on me back then. batman became my favourite superhero to this day! i might add that batman ist the only superhero i like because i'm not really into superhero movies :-) and it has a lot to do with the style of Tim Burton. Its a dark movie. It has a lot of that Comic Book DNA but they don't overdo it like in the third and fourth batman movie of that Era. Sadly when watching this at 1080p you recognise a lot of matte paintings used for background, drawed animation used in some scenes and a lot of miniature action scenes. but putting this aside the movie still holds up today as a true classic Batman Movie from the 80s. The Cast is great. Especially Jack Nickolson as the Joker is amazing.
My Rating as an 11 year old was probably 9. nowadays its more like an 7.5 so i gave it a solid 8.
2012 looks like a masterpiece in comparison
Its not as bad as everyone says but it really is far away from being any good.
its your typical disaster movie. not a tiny bit realistic. lots of things break. lots of people dying. and in the middle of it a plot with no original ideas. it gets a 5 from me because its a decently made movie. with a much better script this could have been better.
Could have been better
The Movie starts pretty weak, boring actually. the costumes looked cheap. the visuals weren't very interesting. something felt wrong here. its your typical CGI spectacle with nothing really "new". its hard to explain without spoiling anything. the writing was also not the best here. especially the relationship between the two main characters felt forced at times. the movie took over an hour to start becoming at least a little interesting. its something you watch one time and then never again.
Cars 3 (2017)
Good Sequel! Better than the Cars 2
The first Cars movie was awesome and it jumpstarted a lot of rip-offs tv shows for children. talking cars or talking planes everywhere nowadays... cars was the origin and of course there have been two sequels to that movie. while the first sequel felt forced onto the franchise this one here fits perfectly. a great continuation about how his career would develop over the years. he's not a rookie any more... he's not as fast as he used to be... he needs to find out how to solve this... the hints about where the story goes are subtle and reach the right conclusion in the end. and its feels like this might also be the final movie for the franchise but who knows...
it a solid 7. if you loved the first one you will love this one as well
The Fall (2013)
Not for everyone
To be fair i only watched the first two episodes. could not watch any more of it. it was simply very boring! the story is good so far but nothing great or special. what really drives me away is the very dry approach to deliver whats happening. very dry and well... very boring in a way. its kept very realistic. for some people this might work and it could be an 8. but if you are like me you expect something else... something less... dry... i don't know how to explain. just try it for one episode. if you are bored as i was, leave it.
Deep Impact (1998)
Tries too hard...
Remember Armageddon? That was a great movie about an asteroid on its way to earth. an action movie to be precise. this movie has the same background story but puts its focus on a couple of random people and their fates. but some of their story line feel forced and the outcome was no surprise. at least they are trying to be more realistic in terms of what could happen in such event. overall the movie is just okay... not really bad but also not great. you might watch it once on the tv and then probably never again
Good movie but no surprises
Normally you don't expect too much from sequels but here I was surprised how good this movie is. maybe not as good the the previous one but its definitely a different movie and thats a good thing. the story makes sense and the events of the movie are the result of bad decisions by individuals.
However the story wasn't perfect and had some flaws in how a couple of humans behaved. But they needed to get the story going so i might forgive that. The CGI was great and believable too.
one thing that was a little over the top was the state of the city. a little too overgrown by nature in only 10 years. but its just a detail. overall a very good movie!
This Is 40 (2012)
Do you like seeing people shouting and fighting for 2 hours? this is for you!
Seriously, i don't remember a lot of normal or even funny conversations in this movie. actually this movie is NOT a comedy! its a drama movie! all the time people shouting and fighting over stupid things. it was so bad i almost wanted to leave the theatre in the middle of the movie which i usually never do. i don't remember much of the story but at least i remember there wasn't any story worth telling. just a glimpse into the life of a dysfunctional family where everyone is unhappy.
Should be cut into 10 minutes and added to second Hobbit movie
What i remember of reading the Book 20 years ago the main story is basically over after the first 10 minutes of this movie. After that they just tie up some loose ends and return home because this was actually the main event. The finale! This one feels like its just made to make a lot of money. Nothing more. Of course this movie is still entertaining but if i every watch the Hobbit Triology again i will stop watching after about 10 minutes into this movie because the remaining 2 hours are not worth watching a second time.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
"Trust no one"!
That could be the subtitle of the movie and the title of all the bad press this movie got! the bad press is not necessarily wrong but they exaggerate things a little too much.
In fact Its really a solid Sci-Fi Movie set in the Star Wars Universe. Not more, not less. The actors are all well selected! Han is believable and so is Lando and Chewy and everyone else. They all play their parts perfectly and i can't imagine any other actors in those role except the original actors of course when they were younger.
The only character i didn't like was that droid. i thought she was extremely annoying but the droid has limited screen time so its not another jar jar.
The plot is kept simple but has a lot of twists here and there that makes it fun to watch.
The main thing i have to critizise is dialogue and "fan service".
Yeah it might be fun to show a scene or two that makes you remember that almost exact scene from the original triology but its only fun the first time you watch it. the next time its probably only annoying. they should completely stop doing this! Episode 7 was a enough as an homage. that should suffice.
The dialogue was also no fun at times. people just don't talk like this. with improved dialogue the movie could have been much better. Especially in extreme situations less dialogue is better than too much of it.
My actual rating is a 6.5. with better dialogue, less fan service and a better droid character this could have been a 7.5
Sick Movie. Prepare yourself for the worst before watching
I just remembered this movie and thought i could write a review after seeing this maybe 20 year ago. I know... 20 years? how much could i remember? well, this movie was very disturbing so it left an impression. I'm a fan of splatter movies. When watching Dead Alive i was laughing the whole movie because it was so funny. But this one is different. No Humor here. Its a serious and very sick movie with explicit and disgusting scenes. i watched it on VHS so after maybe 30-45 minutes in i clicked on fast forward and watched the rest of the movie with 3x speed just to get it over with. i will never watch this ever again. The movie just feels too realistic.
Maybe Adam Sandlers best of the decade?
I don't know why i still watch his movies. maybe in hopes that one is good for a change? in this case it is really is a good movie. not great but good. the only problem is that is doesn't offer anything new. its just your usual romantic comedy movie. Too bad Adam Sandler doesn't make more of those these days...
If you like Adam Sandler movies go and watch it!
Friends from College (2017)
Not what you expect
I try to keep it short. I have seen only 2 Episoden and i won't continue watching. I expected some sort of comedy or something... i don't know... what you get is far away from funny... its strange, awkward and extremely boring. its a show no one really needs. maybe it tries to be intelligent or something like that... maybe some sort of drama? but it fails at that. i don't know what else to say... don't bother watching this. chances are you don't like it too.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Not good, not bad, just sad...
Compared to Alien 1-4 and Prometheus this move is the weakest. It tries to be everything in a way but doesn't succeed in anything. it should have focused on one thing only like Alien set the focus on suspense and horror or the second one focused on action. but here... the first half of the movie was more or less a 6 or 7. it builds up to something and as soon as you get some major intel about whats happening here... wtf? but not the good kind of wtf just the bad kind... There was almost no character development. for that there were just too many characters in that movie. i think around 15 people... but i only remember five or maybe six of them. The CGI of those Aliens was also not really great. And when you saw the Alien everything was cut very fast so not much to look there anyway. also a lot of questions of prometheus remain unanswered. and the continuity to the first Alien is messed up and doesn't fit any more. bye bye jockey i guess? well nothing more to tell without spoiling anything... A 6 out of 10 is the best i can give.
Was this made for TV?
I was a huge Poltergeist fan when i was a little kid and was really scared of the original movies when i saw them on TV in the late 80s or early 90s. It had everything a good movie should have. a good script, good actors, good director... this one had none of those. the actors feel unmotivated. the script was rewritten to add the typical 21century Hollywood movie formula and the director didn't know what he was doing anyway...
don't watch this remake... stay with the original! its scarier anyway, even today!
I have to admit i only waited so long to watch this movie because of the bad reviews. now i finally watched it and i have to say that its not as bad as you might think. but its no masterpiece either. its one of those movies that did't fully reached its potential. but to really like this movie you probably should be at least in your late 30s and have played those games when you were a kid back in the 80s. i don't think people, especially kids today would really like this movie when they have never played them. that being said if you are in your late 30s or older, give this movie a try. a good 7 four you. if you are under 20, don't bother watching... you won't like it. for you its probably only a 5.
Ridiculous but still funny
The first movie was kinda bad and very strange so i didn't have any expectations for this sequel. but i think they actually improved to the first movie. its still ridiculous but a lot more funny somehow. the pacing of the movie was slightly better. but its still a movie you only watch once and probably forget about it.
Year One (2009)
As bad as the ratings suggest
Wow. After only 7 minutes in the movie you know why the low ratings. its just awful. i usually like the main cast but here they feel totally wrong from the beginning. this humour might works when you are a child but not when you are an adult. sadly the movie continues to be bad. there are some nice bits and pieces here and there but mostly not worth your time.
Van Helsing (2016)
Thats what i think at least once or twice in an episode. "come on! wtf?". lots of bad choices for dialog and things happening. it often feels forced and they desperately want to make it interesting but it doesn't work all the time. so what is this show about? Well, Superheros everywhere, Zombies everywhere, they probably thought lets mix a superhero with zombies... oh wait. zoo many zombies on TV now, lets make them vampires instead so they can speak although they fight as stupid like zombies. Walking into lines of fire, almost never take cover from gun fire. like the change from zombie to vampire was done after filming and they weren't able to change the script in time. everything else works like expected. any new characters or groups are expendable and die fast. the core group usually survives. the only get rid of the less interesting characters after a while. the "superhero" gets bitten a lot! in almost every fight she gets bitten but she is resistant so it doesn't matter. i finished the first season anyway but don't think i will bother to watch any other season if it comes to that.
Designated Survivor: Pilot (2016)
Not bad but not great
So i just saw the pilot and i'm not sure what to think. its not really bad. it got good actors in it, the idea is at least a little fresh but not all of it. it builds up some story lines that will be probably developed in the rest of the season but isn't as interesting as you want it to be. some things are actually kinda wrong... *Spoiler* So the whole Congress blew up. All American Politicians dead and his son is attending a party somewhere... I'm pretty sure if something like this happens every party stops immediately and no one is dancing any more. *Spoiler End* But i hope that the next Episodes will have better writing and that the Plot thickens. The show has potential but it might takes a couple of Episodes to determine if this is a good show or not
First word to describe the show that comes to my mind is "Boring". Just a couple of Episodes put together that have something to do with love. At times it feels like something you might improvise and film with a couple of friends and then cut it down to 30 minutes. I think the majority of people won't enjoy it too much. If you want to see a Show where each Episode focus on another person then you might try "Skins" (UK Version). But this one... The only reason i watched it was because Jacqueline Toboni and Kate Micucci was in it. Not much else to tell about it. Maybe try the first Episode yourself and if you don't like it don't bother watching another one. it won't get any better
