The Vault (2017)
Definitely deserves better rating than 4.5.
This movie falls into multiple genre and I think it succeeds in all of them. This movie works as action, thriller and horror movie.
+ Good cast, not all are well known but roles are well cast. + Every actor did their best even the extras. + writing and Direction is really good. + BGM matches very well and kinda acts as the catalyst to the whole situation accordingly. + There is qite a few twists at the end. + Very short movie, doesn't bore you.
- Never really unravelled the mystery of the masked robber.
- Leaves one or two loose ends.
The script is done in such a way that you feel sorry for both the hostages and robbers. There is a backstory for everyone the bank, robbers, and the assistant bank manager played by James Franco but it takes it's time to show you what's what and who's who. I enjoyed this movie and never felt bored I was entertained very well.
The Humanity Bureau (2017)
Slow burner - Same old dystopian formula with different actors and premise.
You've seen this type of movie before only difference here is the premise. I don't want to spoil anything, this could have been a much better movie but not great or awesome.
Acting is really good, everybody did their part very well. There's a boy he's annoying at times does stupid things for god knows what reason, tries to be smart by asking questions. Nicholas Cage is old, her looks very old and I felt really sad for him by just looking at him. Sarah Lind did her part very well, villains lacks the punch.
The only thing that made me finish this movie was the direction and cinematography, BGM was not bad either. This movie won't make you say wow, those who like dystopian movies and have patience may enjoy the movie. If you have nothing to do and you've nothing else to watch then you can give it a try but be warned it's a slow burner.
Tomb Raider (2018)
Does Justice to the Video game and the legend Lara Croft
I'm writing this review because to a lot of negative reviews out there just because some people don't like Alicia as Lara, well they're wrong Alicia is more believable as Lara. This is not a glamorous movie like Angelina Jolie's previous movies. There is no cleavage show like previous installments. Angelina's movies were based on the games from 1990's and this is purely based on the reboot games, so please don't compare them, it's pointless! I loved both the reboot games and I think movie did justice to the game. At present, for me this is the best video game based movie out there, not a masterpiece or ground braking but entertaining and it does somewhat crack the video game based movie curse.
It'll be easy to understand the background story for those who played the reboot game and for other they have added background to Lara and her father Richard's life which helps. It takes a little while for Lara to learn about her father's location and to get there but the build up is done well. From the starting itself you're told about the legend of Himiko and her handmaidens and more is revealed as she gets to the island. Credit to the director and crew for the cinematography and wonderful action scenes.
All the cast did a wonderful Job and Alicia was great as Lara. There are times when you feel like you're watching the cut scenes from the video game, she's that good. Dominic West as Richard Croft was good, the father daughter relation was spot on. Daniel Wu doesn't have much screen time but he has also done a great job. Walton Goggins did his best like he always does. When it comes to playing bad guys he's one of the best, but I felt like he was a little under used. What makes his scary good is that his character does what he says, if he threatens to kill someone he ends up doing it.
This movie is more of a character study. It explores Lara's background as a child, teenager and an adult and explains well how she becomes the tomb raider we know of. "First kill is always the hardest" Alicia hits the right spots when it comes to express emotions. Alicia is a wonderful actress and she has proved it, this is her movie. There are some flaws too but I'm sure you won't mind it. If you're a fan of Lara Croft you must see this movie and judge it yourself, beware of the fake reviews written by those who are disappointed by not seeing much cleavage.
A good ending to one of the best TV movie trilogies.
I'm reviewing and rating this movie as a TV movie and not comparing it to any mainstream blockbuster. Last entry to "The Librarian" TV movie trilogy is the best one for me. It has a better story, better visual effects and good supporting cast. It's no gem or exceptional but a good entertaing light hearted movie that you could enjoy with your kids and family. For TV standards this movie outdid itself for the budget. Noah Wyle is the Librarian and he always will be.
There's no need to be very critical while watching Librarian because this movie is just plain fun and it succeeds, a treasure hunting movie with lot's of action, weird twists, and a lot of good comedy.
If anyone's having second thoughts about watching this movie after the second one "Return to King Solomon's mines", you definitely need to watch this because this is the best of the trilogy.
An okay movie but could've been better!
As the title suggests story is two detectives solving crimes based on the game of Hangman. Idea is good for an engaging thriller but it falls short when it comes to subplots and it's execution. The movie does an okay job as a thriller and it has a few jump scares that works.
Sarah Shahi as the captain and Brittany snow as a reporter did a good job. Lead actors Karl Urban and Al Pacino looked like they were miscast. Al Pacino looked like he didn't care about the movie and acted as a favor to producer/director. Karl Uraban is supposed to be the gritty hard boiled detective and he just does that more like he's "Dredd". All the detective work is done by the supporting actress Brittany Snow and movie would've done better if she was the main character, too bad for her this role would go unnoticed.
Subplots are very generic, seen it carried out in other movies better. Background score was also generic. What helped the jumpscares was the silence in the background not the background score! There are no logic in certain twists and subplots. Writers didn't think through the movie and left audience with lots of unanswered questions. Precinct looked more like a recording studio and kept changing the furniture for different scenes. Cliched writing and miscasting of lead actors are the main let downs. Directing and screenplay is good to keep you engaged in this cliched movie.
Overall this is a mixed bag with some good and bad performances, weird casting choices, plot holes, generic/illogical plot. Definitely a one time watch, and that too if you're patient. Give this movie a go if you've nothing else to watch.
A good weekend watch
This is a simple movie with it's roots in treasure hunting. The limitations of being a low budget TV movie is visible in certain scenes but it doesn't affect the experience.
This movie is cheesy, witty, entertaining and family friendly. You can watch this movie with your family and have a good time.
All the actors gave a wonderful performance(except the lead actress, felt like she's not suited for the character). Direction was good, screenplay was OK for the theme considering the budget.
There are flaws in story telling and plot, still it's a solid watch(not a no brainer). Sit back relax and enjoy the movie, you'll definitely have a good time.
