I'd heard about this film before, and had wanted to see it for a while, so when it finally came out in my local video shop I rented it immediately.
According to magazine reviews, i'd been promised a realistic High School experience with a shocking yet mesmerizing climax. Oh my yes!
The story centres around a seemingly average day at High School through which we are introduced to a variety of characters- from emotional John, stressed out by family life to loved-up couple, Carrie and Nathan to misfit Michelle to your average teen girl trio of Brittany, Jordan and the other one (cant remember her name atm!). However, in this mix are two slightly darker characters- Alex and Eric- the fiends behind the climactic shootings. We aren't particularly told why Eric would have a reason for the shootings, but we are made aware the Alex- who is somewhat the "mastermind" behind the scheme- is bullied terribly by his other classmates.
The scenes tend to be repetitive- which is something i found slightly annoying, but understood as it is to show how the characters cross in each other's lives. Finally, we come to the scene of the shootins, which is chilling, because the acting is so superb and realistic. To top it off, we are left with somewhat of a cliffhanger in what I like to call the "eeny meeny miny mo" scene-we are left wondering whether Alex kills Nathan or Carrie- or alternatively shoots himself.
For me, the film was far more frightening than any old Nightmare On Elm Street or Friday the 13th movie, simply because it made me aware how possible a situation this is. This is truly a film that will stay with me for quite a while.
