The Cat Gang (1959)

Typical CFF fare
15 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film seems to owe a lot to Enid Blytons Famous Five books. Here there are only three. They discover a gang of smugglers and track them down and eventually capture them with the aid of an adult. All good fun.

Shootout at St Johns Wood Station
14 July 2019
Basically a lot of cliches of the genre stuck together. However I did enjoy the shooitout on the escalators at St Johns Wood station. My favourite fifties villain,Allen Wheatley up to his dastardly schemes,as usual.

British Key Largo?
8 July 2019
Well not quite, but up till the last quarter of an hour this is a brisk and entertaining thriller. Unfortunately a really sappy romantic interest weighs down the film like an anchor. Robert Shaw features in a bit part as a policeman.

Abysmal
8 July 2019
Apart from the brief appearance by the great Max Wall this is a truly abysmal film. It is unclear whether the makers wanted to remake Brief Encounter or Guns of Navarone. So they make a totally unsatisfactory hybrid. The anachronisms abound.70s hairdos being the least of it.There is no way Ford would be chosen to pilot for a night drop.He would have to be trained for weeks before.

propaganda short
6 July 2019
It is surprising that even in 1943 the government were issuing shorts preaching that careless talk costs lives. They knew that there were no German spies on this country. In fact the Germans would have been more able to reach conclusions from radio traffic than from careless talk.

Good climax to tame thriller
5 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is based on a play and doesn't it just show. The performances are likewise very stagey, particularly Sonia Dresdel. However there is a major flaw. The police would not accept an identification of a victim without further identification, such as dental records. So the deception would be discovered very quickly.

waste of a cast and waste of time
4 July 2019
When you see the cast line you think what a great film this will be.Sadly no. It is tedious in the extreme and becomes downright silly in the last 20 minutes.

idiosyncratic
2 July 2019
Tthis is interesting parts but the film is diminished by the use of various silly devices.Distorted sound, often made further incomprehensible by loud music and a rather odd appearance by the director of the film.

Truly awful
26 June 2019
There is nothing that merits waching in this film. The agent should be played by an older man,but is played by an incompetent, dubbed,American actor. East Germany is played by Spain. Michael Robbins has a small part. On The Buses is better than this.

Not one of his bedt
24 June 2019
It is unfortunate that one of Buchannan's best films,Break The News, has never been on DVD,or shown on tv .Two showings at the BFI are all that has been seen of this film. So in a sense we must be grateful for those of his films which did get shown on tv and are available for us to see.

Maybe it would have been better if a director with a musical flair had directed this.

Dated Unfunny Comedy
23 June 2019
The first reviewer has clearly confused John Fraser and Dennis Price,as the later plays the headmaster. The films premise is totally unoriginal. Even allowing for that the film is unfunny, and overlong at 92 minutes.

Effective B thriller
22 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Donald Houston is a boat owner who is broke. He accepts a smuggling proposition from Bill Kerr which seals his fate. Much of it shot in the dark, probably for economy. Still worthwhile viewing.

A mishmash
18 June 2019
The second reviewer almost guessed the reason this film was made. The British government slapped an 85%tax on American films,as the country was broke. The Americans retaliated by banning export of new films to the UK.The government asked Rank to plug the shortfall.Rank charged Sydney Box to make around 50 films. This was one of them. There are 3 credited writers but it feels as if many more fingers were in the pie.It changes course as often as a destroyer on a zig zag course. As a result this film is supremely unfunny.Contributing to the £12million overdrat ammassed by Rank by 1950.

TPTV is a great channel but occasionally it shows clinkers like this.Acting, direction and script are uniformally poor.

fine cast keeps it going till risible ending
10 June 2019
This is an enjoyable thriller with Margaret Lockwood playing against type.It seems as if the writer ran out of inspiration with the climax. Some have claimed there is a plot point with the will.It would be strange if a husband were not told that his wife had made a will.If Athene Seylers character died without making a will then Eddie would have received a substantial sum plus a life interest in the remainder. So the logic behind the plot point is unclear but not detremental to the film as a whole.

Very Strange
7 June 2019
For some reason this has been re-titled Murder In The Footlights..The story is about the break up of the eponymous. act and then the breakdown of Favid Farrar. He does it in the grand style, eyes rolling and neighing like a horse Not his best performance.George Robey has a bit part.

Twos Company......
4 June 2019
Rather strange film alround.Difficult to know who this low budget film would have been aimed at.Probably too risqué for American tv,and getting a very rare airing recently on Londoon live. Not particularly engrossing despite the unusual subject matter.

inappropriate title
3 June 2019
This film was produced by London Cannon films, part of the group that purchased EMI films and then sold off nearly everything to pay for it This film is fairly typical of the schlock produced by them .Low on budget and entertainment.

Good cinematography

When you have said that you have said everything.I found the sound early on to be rather indistinct and made the film rather difficult to follow. The title was misleading.

Creaky
31 May 2019
Difficult to know what is more creaky Richard Arlen or the plot. The plot is to do with the theft of drugs. The plot itself is slightly absurd wiith most of the action taking place at the desk of Donald Houston, who is the director of an insurance company who is paying out for the thefts.Richard Arlen is well past his prime.Michael Balfour plays his usual villain..

Our Miss Fired
31 May 2019
There are 2 major problems with this film.Fitstly the story was written by Yed Willis,a dramatist.Secondly it is a one joke film La Rue is a man dressed up as a woman. The comedy comprises inane slapstick and weak double entendres.Incidentally the film is set in France in 1940,the photo of Churchill in a bar places it after May 1940.The film was sent out on release as an AA,equivalent to 15.So it is unlikely that the song would have been cut to lower the certificate

Rather strange
29 May 2019
With writers who were at the heart of the British new wave and set in a run down Notting Gill,as it was,I was expecting a touch of social realism. However what we get is a film that after much coveting of an X certificate, tends to go into lurid melodrama in the last third. However it was good to see Kathleen Harrison and Frieda Jackson,Finlay Currie and of course Diana Dors.A cast to cherish even if the film is not

Full of contrivance and flaws
23 May 2019
The film starts off well but then heads off in another direction alas. The problems are manifold, there are flaws in the depiction of the police procedures in relation to collection of forensic evidence.Class in the court scenes where Counsel is allowed to proceed with questions that would never be allowed. Finally the club.as is so silly as to destroy any credibility the film may have built up.I

what was the point?
19 May 2019
It is difficult to understand why the producers of this film decided to make a fictionalised account of the life of this world famous pianist. It is dreary and boring and does the pianist little favours.
