The Skeleton Key (2005)
Skeleton Key opens dark places in your mind!
Saw Skeleton Key last night, and I really liked it. I do not think it will be a big money maker... there is not video game to come from it... no toys... no merchandise... no plush dolls... but it is a good little mind F@#*$R. And that is refreshing!
I do not want to say much about the plot, because it does have some nice twists and turns. Not only is it artistically shot, putting you right in the sweltering heat of the deepest south, but it also builds beautifully, and to it's knife turn, back lash ending, that I was so very pleased with.
Kate Hudson, who I'm not really a fan of, was pretty good. I have no complaints at all with her. All of the cast was good, I thought. My favorite, and probably most peoples favorite was Gene Rowlands as Violet Devereaux. She gave a great performance. I don't know if she is really southern or not, but she had the dialect DOWN! (I'm from the MS Gulf Coast, grew up 45 mins out of New Orleans.) Here's a little aside for this one... when you leave... you will have death on your mind. It will most likely stay there for a while. SO... after the movie, maybe go goofy golf, get ice cream, go to a toy store... and get some play dough.... oooo maybe not... could bring the movie back to ya... anyway, do something that can help you switch gears a bit. A dark movie it is, and a dark mood it will leave you with. Not that that's a bad thing. Any movie that can make you feel something other than the urge to drink Pepsi and play xbox, is OK in my book! Congrats to Kruger & Softley (the Writer & Director) on a damn good movie, that made me think when it was all said and done. I had a good time!
Better than the book
This is the one time I can say I liked th movie better than the book. It's not about a shark. It's about 3 very different men in one place at one time with a common goal. A perfect story. An education in film making.
Blood Feast (1963)
The First Gore Fest
This is one of my favorite movies. How can anyone not enjoy it on some level. You may find it gross, or funny, or just be in shock over Connies Mason's cue card reading... either way... it's fun!
