Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)
Slow, complex, terrible and beautiful as a marsh
I expected the film to be about abuse and crime survival, framed by wild natural hazards. It is much more. The storytelling evolves with flashbacks, with a dark mood all along and a romantic line that provides continuity.
I enjoyed the slow cinematographic rhythm, that seemed to follow the pace and ambiguity of marsh waters currents. Scenery is simply amazing, very rich in conveying atmosphere. With feathers of Crawdads as integral part of the narrative, love, friendship, nostalgia, dear and anguish became intertwined inextricably in my memory of this film.
The protagoníc role - Kya- is brilliantly performed by Daisy Edgar-Jones. Stay for the closing credits to enjoy "Carolina", sang by Taylor Swift, because it is haunting. 8/10.
Inside Man (2022)
Incremental suspense and tension!
I really liked this four-chapters movie. With quick turns and a 50s or 60s nostalgic style in music soundtrack, dialogues and even furniture, this mini series of the BBC enchanted me. I was a little lost at times, with the fast back-in-time narratives and the many characters, but in episode 3 and especially in episode 4 ... the suspense, dilemmas and actions glued me to the screen.
At times, there is a sense of irony, and some comical situations, typical of a very British drama in every sense. Not your usual American full of police cars crime, it evolves at the right pace. Tucci is gigantic here.
Highly recommended.
The Current War (2017)
Edison as a celeb and Westinghouse as Business man
I truly enjoyed this film. The images were right
In splt, and many, artistic. I liked the rhythm, although would have enjoyed more depth in the historical accuracy or scientific explanations.
I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end.
Some slow moments that do not diminish the overall portray of a bygone era.
A top acting scene for Cumberbatch was the explanation asked by Westinghouse of his prime (?) Invention. Magistral!
Wow!!!
Go see this movie.
Incheon sangryuk jakjeon (2016)
An epic portray of the Korea War
Immersed in an epic framework, "Operation Chromite" is a film that serves the purpose to inform the general public about heroic individual, group, army battles that shaped one important episode of the Korean War, not known to all. I did not know much about this war and I exit the projection with the desire to learn more about the historical moment, evolution and implications of this conflict, that till today affects the region. The general MAC Arthur and the protagonist Jung-Jae Lee completely fulfill the expectations of their roles, while the remaining characters are not up to their acting quality, although very good. Some characters are developed as augmented villains, and surrounded and producing evil, end by raising our most basic ad version feelings. The SKorean roles gain our loyalty, and sympathy. I did not like two elements: the intense presence of smoking: MacArthur is practically tied to his pipe, and lights it on one scene. Additionally, cigarettes define the villainous NKorean General, who lights no less than 10 cigarettes (with matches) throughout the story. The second element I disliked was the music: very cliché and excessively westernized.
I particularly liked the last half hour of the movie, where the tension really builds up and captured my full emotion and attention. I ended feeling the suspense, terror, US pride and happiness the Director intended. It was a final raising wave that engaged all spectators! I saw this movie in a fantastic movie hall in Kuwait, and in peak moments the spectators broke into applause, - rare reaction nowadays in moviegoers. It was rewarding and created a sense of victory that -in my opinion- the Director intended to produce. A movie to see! To learn, to enjoy, to suffer, to cry. And to be proud of the liberation efforts of both sides:S Koreans and Americans. Hurray for the good winning over evil
The 9th Life of Louis Drax (2016)
A storytelling haunting story!
Alexander Aja brings us a fantastic story line, developed with beautiful and even magical images that we will remember for a long time. Filled with all variety of feelings that are interwoven in any given life, dressed up with several truly beautiful and magical images, "The 9th life of Louis Drax" is a film that will not let you indifferent. I left the big projection hall, with several reflections about beauty, life, love, destiny, maturity, and caring that will remain with my inner self, most probably serving as platform for many conversations in the future, with friends and family. It is the kind of movie that triggers a reflection, and may help us to think twice in our perceptions. I particularly liked the way the director takes us through a complex story, unfolding it with mastery in the selection of filming planes, settings, time jumps and and pace. I recommend this film, as one of the best of this season!
American Pastoral (2016)
A deep reflection for parents (and more)
The deep emotions that "American Pastorale" triggered in me will not be forgotten easily. And all parents will most probably feel the same. Who has not fear, as a dedicated parent, the fear of misleading his or her child? Of not providing the nutritive space for growing healthy and into a serene adulthood? The face of the extraordinary actress Dakota expressed that feared vision a parent never would like to see. And I felt scared.
I saw this black film in Kuwait, and even censored, stripped off of nudity and sexual-related scenes, it still conveyed such a powerful story that I ended up crying, not for an excessive sentimental mood, but for fear and closeness to a real-life situation that can happen to any family in any country. Magistral storytelling, dark, but so human. Sad. Touching.
Deepwater Horizon (2016)
A must see for workers of the oil industry
Working in the O&G industry, I had to go see this film! I just saw "Deepwater Horizon", and I plainly say it was an experience, with all the meaning of the word. I cried, I felt the fear of the imminent blowout and most importantly, i experienced the humanely terror of trying to survive in a disaster as huge as that, known to us as Macondo. The film does respect the memory of the 11 human losses, and portrays the importance of technical knowledge and experience at operations. BP ends as the only villains. The ecologic disaster is not addressed. Only a couple of incidents with two large birds, trigger an unconscious reflection about the relationship between the ecosystem and the oil spills. The huge effort of rescue the GOM waters probably deserves another whole movie. Go see it, share your own impression!
