Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016)
Outrageous and hilarious. Loved it.
Let me start by saying....if you didn't like the show, you won't like the movie. If you didn't watch the show, you're probably going to be very confused. Some may dislike, some may enjoy.
The AbFab movie is for AbFab fans. Our favorite disasters are back in all of their glory, and are fortunately joined by a handful of the major players from the TV show. There are some great new cameos, as well as some to-be-expected friendly faces. The whole larger- than-life atmosphere, quick whittled hilarious humor, and the outrageous story line was non-stop fun. Lumley and Saunders step into their roles without missing a beat, and the entire film felt so happily familiar yet fresh and new. A scene at the beginning of the movie featuring Saffy at the kitchen table shortly followed by Eddie and Patsy raising havoc started it off just right, and the whirl-wind adventure that followed did not disappoint. All I have to say is thank you, AbFab cast & crew. Well done.
Xena: Warrior Princess (1995)
more than you would expect
The best thing about XWP is that it is honest. Fans of the show know it to be, yes, campy and cheesy, with some over-dramatic sound effects and bad acting here and there. And the show doesn't hide from that. It owns it. And once you get past that, you begin to see more depth than you expected. Getting through season 1 can be a little rough. Its a low budget with mostly green actors, and you can see that in season 1. The trick is to get through that, and you begin to see these actors seriously come into their characters, and an amazing relationship begins to grow. If you are willing to keep an open mind and go on an adventure of love, action, and friendship, then this show is for you.
Lucy & Renee made this show what is was. They are so different but the chemistry is amazing. The journey they made as actors through this series was tremendous. I have said for many years that television has been missing a strong female actress like Lucy Lawless. It is nice to see her as the manipulative & beautiful Lucretia in the Spartacus series.
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011)
Simply put, it is just fun.
Sure, there are times I want to sit down and watch something deep and smart and layered. There are other times where I want to sit down and watch something that will take me on an adventure, and just have some fun. I get that this show tries to be smart and layered, and some of the characters and some of the plots have their moments. However, if you only expect that, then you will be disappointed. It is over the top, bloody, sexy fun. John Hannah plays Batiatus very well. He can annoy the crap out of me I can also feel slightly sympathetic because he is in over his head and frankly not as intelligent as he pretends. Lucy Lawless plays his wife Lucretia, the brain behind the house of Batiatus at times. She does an excellent job and is as beautiful as ever. Television missed the strong female actress. Hannah & Lawless definitely carry the story at times when it is becoming weak.
Outside of that, all the other actors carry their weight at most times, and mostly just prove as entertaining.
Thor (2011)
Let down.
I am the type that only goes to the movie theater when I feel that the move must be seen on the big screen. Action movies or movies with amazing scenery usually are the ones, like LOTR, since the theater costs so much. Which is why I usually go see the Marvel films in the theater. They are always fun, and seeing them on the big screen makes them more fun. Thor...well. Not fun. Boring. Not enough action. Any "funny" or exciting part, I had already seen a hundred times in the trailer. Anthony Hopkins may have been the only good thing about it, and that is just because he is Anthony Hopkins and he can do what he wants. Everything else, well, not so Marvelous.
