Rust Creek (2018)
Thriller with a Heart of Gold
This one's definitely edge-of-your-seat, but there are several truly touching moments between the two main characters. Certainly worth a watch.
Holiday Horror Story
Completely unsung Christmas movie, but with such good scares and effects too!
A Christmas Story (1983)
Wholesome Holiday Classic
If your house is anything like mine, this is on a near-constant rotation the last couple of weeks every December. Really holds up, even after all these years.
The Descent (2005)
Not the strongest movie for the first hour, but really brings it home in the end. Ideal viewing in a small, very dark room. Really brings you into the world.
Wish I'd liked it more...
Saw this long after the hype train dragged it to death for a few years, really wanted to like it more. Good mood and images for the most part, but really not much story and really no actual scares.
Beauty Mark (2017)
Important Movie, Unspeakable Topic, Incredibly Well Made
It's incredibly intense, so definitely buckle up and have a light-hearted comedy queued up to start right after - but if you're looking for a tough, important story that's incredibly well-told and crafted, definitely check this one out and spread the word. Thornton turns in what should be a career-making performance and Cathy Curtin's no slouch either. Laura Bell is outstanding if not a little underused, leaves you wanting even more of her.
Keep Your Distance (2005)
This film was a very pleasant surprise. I must say that I went in expecting much less than I got. It's quick-paced and fairly short, so it barely feels like you've spent any time in the theater at all. Nice, quick little thrill ride. And, the ending! Wow. Who would've ever guessed that... Well, you should definitely see it for yourself. It's wonderful how you walk away from this one rethinking how much you trust everyone! Friends, family, coworkers, everyday acquaintances. You may never look at your loved ones the same way again. I was up at the RIIFF in Providence and happened to catch this there. The acting, the music, the cinematography, the fitting bits of humor - all near perfect. I highly recommend checking it out if you have the chance. If nothing else, hopefully the DVD will be along soon enough!
