Great Disappointment
16 August 2018
The name of Marina Sirtis is immediately associated to the character Counselor Deanna Troi, from "Star Trek: The Next Generation". The cast has other names from Star Trek series. With this nostalgia and expectation of a good sci-fi, the unwary viewer may watch "5th Passenger" like I did. Unfortunately, the story is awful and the screenplay is a mess with a confused conclusion. My vote is two.

The Tin Star (1957)

The Last Lesson
14 August 2018
When the experienced bounty-hunter and former sheriff Morg Hickman (Henry Fonda) arrives in a town to claim his bounty for killing a wanted outlaw, he meets the rookie temporary sheriff Ben Owens (Anthony Perkins). Hickman befriends the boy Kip (Michel Ray) and is lodged by his widow mother Nona Mayfield (Betsy Palmer) at home. Meanwhile Ben asks Hickman to teach him to be a sheriff since he wants to be assigned by the residents to the position. Ben faces problem with the scum troublemaker Bart Bogardus (Neville Brand) and when a prominent dweller is murdered by two criminals, Bogardus organizes a posse to hunt them down. But Ben has decided to capture the killers alive and give a fair trial to them.

"The Tin Star" is a great western directed by Antony Mann, with the 52 year-old Henry Fonda in excellent shape and Anthony Perkins in one of his first features. The bitter Hickman has a sad past that has certainly affected his behavior and Anthony Perkins is perfect in the role of the insecure Ben Owens. The happy end is a counterpoint to "Shane" that has similar situation of a stranger involved with a boy and a widow. My vote is eight.

Amateurish Film Shot With Webcams, Phone Cams and Handycam Camcorders
14 August 2018
"#Captured" is an amateurish film shot with webcams, phone cams and handycam camcorders. The story of six high school students that use a pornographic site to raise money is stupid and silly. The acting is dreadful and the obnoxious characters seem to be twenty and something years; therefore they do not convince as "high school students". The deaths are ridiculous and the intestines of the fat character look awfully fake. The killer has no development and has an annoying voice. If the guy is a religious fanatic, suicide is sinful in most religions and his act does not make any sense. Last but not the least, the writer of this terrible and sexist story is the lead actress. My vote is two.

A Vampire Movie Like in the Old Times
12 August 2018
The government secretary Lyubchinsky Andrej Vasilevich (Konstantin Kryukov) and his servant Paramon arrive at an old monastery in the Carpathian Mountains to bring an invitation from the czar to the local monk Lavr (Mikhail Porechenkov) to move to the capital. However Lavr refuses since the local village needs his services and Andrej and his servant stumble upon the beautiful villager Milena (Aglaya Shilovskaya) in a lake nearby the road while returning to Moscow. Paramon is accidentally wounded by Milena and she brings them home to treat the man. Soon Milena and Andrej fall in love with each other. Meanwhile the Master of the Vampires Strigev is brought back to his castle in the mountains by two servants with the intention of raising an army of vampires and capture Milena, whose blood is capable to let the vampires live under the sun. The battle between evil and good are about to start.

"Vurdalaki" is a great Russian vampire movie that recalls the good films from the old times, with vampires afraid of crosses, sun and holy water. The story and screenplay are attractive, combining creepy moments with funny ones. The cast is excellent with a great chemistry between the gorgeous Aglaya Shilovskaya and Konstantin Kryukov. The cinematography is top-notch and one of the most beautiful in recent releases. It is difficult to understand why this film is so underrated in IMDb. My vote is eight.

Intriguing and Frustrating
11 August 2018
The astronauts Theo (Brandon Routh), Emily (Caity Lotz), Dvorak (Dane Cook) and Bug (Ben Feldman) are locked in an underground facility imitating a spaceship for 400 days simulating the travel to a distant planet. The intent is to study the psychological effect caused by the long isolation period without contact or communication with the outside world. They experience hallucinations and weird noises on the outside and close to the day 400, they see a stranger in their ship. When the man flees, Theo and Bug leave the facility and they find outside world dusty, dark and desolate. They decide to walk to seek somebody and while Dvorak believes it is part of the experiment, Theo, Emily and Bug believe that something bad may happen on Earth.

"400 Days" is an intriguing thriller with an absolutely frustrating conclusion. There are flaws in the story (how a weak man like Bug is selected for such experience is probably the worst) but in general the film builds the mystery with an increasing tension. Unfortunately the lack of conclusion is a cold shower in the viewer. My vote is five.

Desolation (II) (2017)

Promising and Deceptive
11 August 2018
In New York, the cashier of a restaurant Katie (Dominik García-Lorido) is a traumatized woman since she was raped and got an abortion some time ago. Katie is under therapy and uses pills to keep stable and her best friend is Debbie (Ninja N. Devoe) that works with her. When she meets the handsome movie star Jay (Brock Kelly) in the restaurant, they have a love affair and Jay invites Katie to move to his apartment in Los Angeles. She meets Father Bill (Raymond J. Barry) on the arrival and stays with Jay a couple of days. But he needs to shoot a film and leaves Katie alone in the apartment. Soon strange things happen driving Katie to question her sanity.

"Desolation" is a horror film (or thriller) that has attractive moments, beginning with the gorgeous Dominik García-Lorido (maybe the greatest attraction of this film). The promising beginning holds the attention of the viewer, but soon the plots becomes predictable. However the deceptive flawed conclusion has so many holes that makes "Desolation" a terrible film, losing the initial potentiality of the story. My vote is four.

Gives the Sensation of Déjàvu
11 August 2018
"Un sac de billes" is another film about a Jewish family shattered by the German invasion. The story is not original since the tragedies are very alike and there is lack of emotion with the cold direction by Christian Duguay. After more than seventy years and hundreds of movies about this sad period of the mankind history, a new film about this theme should have something different in excitement or emotion; otherwise will give the sensation of déjàvu for the viewer. My vote is six.

Still Very Funny
8 August 2018
In New York, the housewife Henrietta Robins (Barbra Streisand) and the taxi driver Pete (Michael Sarrazin) have financial difficulties since they got married very young and Pete has not concluded the college education. When Pete receives an inside information from a coworker that the pork bellies will raise their price since the Americans and the Russians are negotiating a great business transaction, Pete needs US$ 3,000.00 to invest in the market. Henrietta decides to help Peter and secretly makes a loan with a mobster. However the price of the pork bellies fall and she is not able to pay the loan. The loan shark promises to kill Pete and Henrietta accepts that her debt be sold to a madame by a higher amount. After many problems, her debt is increased and sold to mobsters and then to a cattle thief. What will happen to Henrietta and Pete?

After forty-four years from its release, "For Pete's Sake" is still a very funny comedy. Barbra Streisand shows great talent performing the role of Henrietta Robins, who gets in a sequence of troubles trying to help her beloved husband. There are many hilarious situations and the film has not aged. My vote is seven.

Don´t Waste Your Time Watching This Flick
7 August 2018
What can be written about the awful "Zombies"? The film is so bad that challenges the aspirant writer to find anything reasonable to be said. The screenplay is terrible and seems to be the sequel of another movie, beginning with two men in a cell during a zombie apocalypse. The one-dimension characters have no development and the situations are odd without any explanation. The direction and the acting are also not good and there are many flaws. But the worst is the conclusion, with the fate of the gorgeous Bena and what Luke learns from Sommers. My vote is two.

Dramatic Supernatural Story of Possession
7 August 2018
"Anguish" is a low-budget film labeled as horror genre but it is indeed a dramatic supernatural story of possession. After the unexpected death of the teenager Lucy hit by a car on the road, the newcomer in town Tess, who suffers from mental disorder, is possessed by Lucy´s strong spirit that is reluctant to move on. The performances are good, but the pace is too slow and disappoints the fans of horror. My vote is four.

Awful
5 August 2018
The gardener Cabral (Francisco Cavalcanti) stumbles with the grave of his boss Dr. Marcio in the garden of his small ranch and tells his discovery to his wife and neighbors. When his boss returns to the ranch, Cabral realizes that he is another man. Soon he learns that the man is the twin brother of Dr. Marcio that was raised by his mother, a notorious prostitute, and now has decided to take the place of his wealthy brother that he killed. Further, his gangsters arrest the employees in a barn to rape the women and execute them later. Will they have the chance to survive?

"Áberrações de Uma Prostituta" (meaning ("Aberrations of a Prostitute") is an awful Brazilian film from the 80´s. The flawed story is so shamefully stupid that seems to have been written by a sick person with mental age of 10 years old. There are excessive nudity and violence mainly against women. My vote is one (awful).

Awful with Fake Rating and Reviews
5 August 2018
IMDb used to be a serious site and an international reference for movie fans. Unfortunately since the last modification, IMDb has become a manipulative site with fake ratings (probably with the use of robots) and reviews (many of them with one or two lines only).

The boring "Blue World Order" is one of the worst movies of the adventure genre. The screenplay is a complete mess and the pace is absolutely inadequate for the genre. The poor direction associated to terrible performances make this flick an unbearable entertainment. However the IMDb User Rating (7.1) lures many viewers (including me). My vote is three.

Looks Like the Pilot of a TV Series
5 August 2018
The low-budget "Island Zero" is a film with an intriguing premise: in an island in Maine, the village is isolated from the continent without the ferry, phone line and Internet. Out of the blue, residents vanish while the survivors have to ration the water and food. What is hunting them down? A biologist may have the answer. The development has moments of soap opera but is not bad and the solution for the budget restriction is smart, making the creatures invisible and saving the costs in CGI. However the conclusion is disappointing and gives the sensation that something is missing. In the end, "Island Zero" looks like the pilot of a TV series. My vote is five.

Based on a True Story
4 August 2018
Films about prisons and martial arts are usually attractive. "A Prayer Before Dawn" is a combination of the two genres and the most important: based on the true story of the English boxer William "Billy" Moore brilliantly performed by Joe Cole. The story of the addicted in heroin boxer that is arrested in Thailand and sent to a notorious prison, learning Muay Thay and winning an important tournament that changed his life gives the sensation of a documentary shot in a prison in Thailand. The plot and scenes are realistic and brutal, totally different from most of the Hollywood productions of the genre. It is not in the same level of the masterpiece "Midnight Express", but expresses the sensation of a Caucasian in a foreigner prison. My vote is seven.

High Wall (1947)

Melodramatic Film-Noir
4 August 2018
The former WWII pilot Steven Kenet (Robert Taylor) is captured by the police after driving his car off the road into a river with his deceased wife. He confesses that he killed his wife and is sent to a psychiatric hospital for medical evaluation. Kenet has a brain injury from the war that provokes amnesia and the justice department needs to know whether he may be charged of murder or not. Dr. Ann Lorrison (Audrey Totter) is assigned to treat him and offers a surgery to cure him but refused by Kenet. When Kenet is visited by the super of the apartment building where the boss of his wife lives, he insinuates that Willard I. Whitcombe (Herbert Marshall) killed his wife in his apartment. Now Kenet wants to recover his memory and accepts to be submitted to a treatment by Dr. Lorrison.

"High Wall" is a film-noir combined with melodrama and romance. The lead story is not bad, but the romance of Kenet and Lorrison has no chemistry and is hard to believe. The black-and-white cinematography is wonderful and the happy-ending is acceptable. My vote is seven.

Betrayal and Payback
3 August 2018
In the post-war in London, the unemployed and former RAF pilot Clem Morgan (Trevor Howard) is invited by his acquaintance Narcissus "Narcy" (Griffith Jones) to join his gang of smugglers and smalltime thieves that uses a funeral home as headquarter. When Clem sees drugs in a coffin, he decides to leave the gang after his last job looting a warehouse. However Narcy betrays him and activates an alarm, but Clem escapes from the warehouse and gets in Narcy´s car. When the gangster Soapy (Jack McNaughton) is driving the getaway car, Narcy orders him to hit and run a policeman on the street. The car crashes a post and Narcy also hits Clem´s head and flees with Soapy, leaving Clem unconscious in the car. Clem is arrested and convicted for manslaughter and sent to a prison in Dartmoor. When Clem receives the visit of Narcy´s girlfriend Sally Connor (Sally Gray) and learns that his girlfriend Ellie is with Narcy, he decides to escape from prison. Now he is a fugitive and seeks out Soapy to clear his name and Narcy to revenge is betrayal.

"They Made Me a Fugitive" is a good British film-noir with themes that might have impacted the audiences in 1947. There is reference to drug; torture of woman; and wife executing the alcoholic husband. The cast is excellent and the performances are top-notch. The beauty of Sally Gray is ahead of the time. The plot is well-resolved but the woman that kills her husband is forgotten. My vote is seven.

Along their investigation they join the gang of mobsters trying to discover who the boss behind the scheme is.

"T-Men" is a great thriller labelled of film-noir. The documentary style is interesting and there are surprising twists along the story. The performances are great and the direction of Anthony Mann is top notch. My vote is seven.

Extinction (2018)

One of the Best Recent Sci-Fi
29 July 2018
"Extinction" is certainly one of the best recent sci-fi, with a great story and a surprising plot point. Peter (Michael Peña) has a recurring nightmare of an alien attack and like Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Total Recall", he has a strange sensation that his dream might be a premonition. When the planet is invaded and the population is really attacked, Peter and his family try to survive and he makes the most unexpected discovery. It is very hard to write about "Extinction" avoiding spoilers but if the viewer likes unexpected thought provoking twists in a sci-fi story, this is the film he (or she) was waiting for. Surprisingly it is totally underrated in IMDb. Maybe the viewers have not understood the plot point. The only problem is indeed Peter´s unbearable daughters. My vote is eight.

Incoherent and Disappointing
28 July 2018
Reading the IMDb User Rating and a couple of reviews in IMDb, the unwary viewer will probably have great expectations with "Ghost Stories". The promising beginning with three scary segments will certainly make him think that made a good choice. Unfortunately there is an incoherent and disappointing conclusion of the lead story, destroying the good segments, and the directors and writers Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman show that they are absolutely lost. Are these good reviews real or fake to promote this terrible flick? My vote is four.

A Film-Noir Based on a True Story
25 July 2018
When the Navy sailor Jim Fletcher (Bill Williams) awakes from a two-year coma in a hospital in San Diego, he overhears a conversation of his doctor and his nurse and learns that he will face a court martial, accused of treason for snitching fellow POWs that were stealing food in a Japanese camp in World War II. He decides to flee from the hospital and seek out his friend Mark Gregory to help him to clear his name. However he meets the widow Martha Gregory (Barbara Hale) and learns that Mark is dead. He calls his other friend Ted Niles (Richard Quine) that promises to help him, Jim needs to travel to Los Angeles to meet Ted. Martha is forced to help him and while driving her car to Los Angeles, two men in another car try to throw them off road. Martha convinces of his innocence and when they go to Chinatown, Jim sees the most brutal guard in the camp, Ken "The Weasel" Tokoyama (Richard Loo). Now he feels that The Weasel may be the means to find what really happened in the camp and he stumbles upon a huge conspiracy.

"The Clay Pigeon" is a film-noir based on a true story despite the flawed but pleasant and tense screenplay. The coincidences and the happy ending make the story hard to believe. The chemistry of Bill Williams and Barbara Hale is fantastic and the resemblance of Bill Williams with his son William Katt is amazing. My vote is seven.

Out of the blue, the ambassador´s son is wounded by a shot. Dr. Lightman and his team together with the secret service do not have much time to find the criminal since there are many VIP guests in the reception that are pressing to be released.

"Love Always" is another great episode of "Lie to Me". The story has many plot points and the logic and observation of Dr. Lightman is engaging and highly entertaining and the episode is well-resolved. My vote is eight.

"Decoding Annie Parker" is a low-budget movie based on the stories of two remarkable women: Annie Parker, a woman that fought her three cancers with courage; and the geneticist Mary Claire King, who believed breast cancer would have a hereditary basis and researched cancer for decades with her team. Unbearable
22 July 2018
On 18 July 2018 I received and email from IMDb with the following information: "With the year more than half over, what are the best movies of 2018? Here are the favorites from the IMDb team". "A Wrinkle in Time" is one of the foregoing list. The worst, I believed in this information since IMDb used to be a serious site.

Yesterday I tried to watch this flick but it is unbearable. I challenge any viewer with brain to watch this garbage to the very end. The awful cast is laughable, highlighting the Afro-American daughter and the Latin American son of the Latin-Afro-American-Caucasian family (a plus fashion in the present Hollywood) and the ridiculous giant Oprah Winfrey in a mermaid costume. The screenplay is among the most boring ever written. The result is an overrated boring film. My vote is one (awful).

Forget the Third Segment
22 July 2018
Divided in three segments hosted by Rod Serling, "Night Gallery" presents two great stories and ends with a terrible segment. "Room with a View" tells a Machieavellian story of manipulation and revenge, with Diane Keaton in the beginning of career performing a nurse easily manipulated by her patient. "The Little Black Bag" tells a tragic story of greed with Burgess Meredith in the lead role. "The Nature of the Enemy" is a totally forgettable short story. My vote is eight.
