Deserves an Award For Most Absurd Characters
First of all, I'm not a fan of people who say the actions of characters in movies are stupid or illogical, or that no one would actually behave in that way, because usually they are talking about a situation that they have never personally been in, and more importantly, all people react differently to situations so who are we to say how the characters should react.
That said, these characters' actions are too absurd to be believed, and the only reason for such behavior is to further a silly plot. For example, the women held captive is going to bop the captor on the head (who is holding her hostage with a gun) and knock him out several times throughout the first 30 minutes of the movie, at which point she could easily grab the gun and be in control, but for some reason she repeatedly tries to run, at which point the captor magically awakens and catches her again, only to be hit and knocked out again, and so on and so forth.
Furthermore, it becomes clear right away that the captor knows she is concealing her identity by repeatedly asking her name and getting angry when she answers, "Cathy." So everyone knows she is not actually Cathy... but Cathy fails to realize this and is flabbergasted that he keeps asking who she is. She was arguably the most frustrating and annoying character to listen to, but one also has to wonder why Luke Evans does not just stop asking her name and reveal that he knows exactly who she is. It's stupidity of both characters in order to try to build suspense/mystery that really ends up being irritating.
On top of all that, the ending is quite unsatisfying. If you thought all this nonsense was building up to some awesome twist or revelation, you'd be wrong.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Come for the Action, Stay for the Comedy
If there's one area where superhero movies generally fall short, it's in the storyline and dialogue, while the fight scenes and special effects never disappoint. Ragnarok is the exception as they have finally put together a story that remains gripping throughout the film, largely due to all the laughs the movie provides.
I thought it was peculiar whe I heard the new Thor movie was being directed by Taika Waititi, who is known for comedies including the amusing well-known film, "What We Do In The Shadows". I have to give credit to him for showing his unknown talent in making terrific action scenes, but for also bringing a better comedic touch to the Marvel universe. I noticed IMDB Trivia points out how Waititi says probably 80 percent of the film was improvised or ad-libbed, so I reckon he deserves credit for adding funny lines and letting the actors have fun making the film.
Waititi doesn't only deliver in terms of comedy though, he also creates some of the neatest fight scenes I've seen from a Marvel movie. In particular, the fight between Thor and a fellow Avenger was very well done and a pleasant surprise to me when they encountered one another.
In the end, it's the most enjoyable superhero movie I have seen (and I've seen them all), because unlike the others that have cheesy, dull dialogue separating the stunning action sequences, Ragnarok is never boring between the action scenes. In fact, it's practically a comedy that is enhanced and made better by the action when it comes along. In other words, you're not just sitting and waiting for the next duel to come along, but you're excited when it arrives.
Some of the other superhero films, on the other hand, have been obviously hastily written, as if they came up with a few cool fights and then quickly wrote up a weak storyline with shody banter between characters to connect the fight scenes. With Ragnarok, I was never bored for a second and (shockingly) never had to roll my eyes even once due to the usual sappy, overly sentimental segment that is meant to touch our hearts, which had become fundamental to these superhero films.
Ultimately, Ragnarok brings the action as expected, but it also brings the comedy, and does so in a perfect balance, to create the best overall superhero movie to date.
Liberated: The New Sexual Revolution (2017)
An Extremely Deceptive Look at Young Adults
The filmmakers desperately search for people who will tell them what they want to hear (and many seem to be joking and duping the filmmakers) in order to portray young adults as sex-crazed maniacs. In reality, research has repeatedly shown that young adults are increasingly having less and less sex than previous generations. As such, a better documentary would examine the reasons why young adults are no longer engaging in sex and why they are having trouble dating, maintaining relationships and connecting with their peers on an intimate level. Instead, the film tries to deceive us by interviewing spring breakers on a beach and making it sound like they have casual sex on a daily basis, but there's no actual evidence of this being true even as they try so hard to find morally casual people letting loose on vacation, and in reality, the people in the film may be virgins who are being depicted in a misleading manner. Ultimately, even if you can find a few rare instances of people engaging in casual sex, they certainly are not representative of the majority of people in this age range.
The Jim Jefferies Show (2017)
A Refreshing View of the News
This quickly became one of my favorite shows if not my absolute favorite. Fans of John Oliver, Trevor Noah, Bill Maher and/or Seth Meyers will love it. Jim covers a wide range of topics and provides an informative, yet amusing, perspective on them. It's good to have another voice of reason on television, and somehow comedians have become the main voices of reason these days with mainstream media outlets becoming increasingly unreliable and untrustworthy. Much like his stand-up performances, his comedy on the show may offend some viewers who can't take a joke. In other words, if you're one of those overly sensitive, die-hard Trump supporters who starts sobbing and griping whenever you hear a critical joke about Trump, this show isn't for you. Jim is going to unapologetically call out Republicans, Democrats and anything else that is silly or illogical in the US.
How Do You Know (2010)
How Can It Not Be Adored By Viewers
Needless to say, I am stunned that this movie has been received with anything but glorious praise. It was precisely the type of romance I enjoy (similar to Spanglish). It's not overdone, sappy romance. However, there's plenty of well constructed lines relating to love that will make you think and give you perspective. Owen Wilson is consistently hilarious throughout the film and I haven't enjoyed seeing him on the screen this much since Bottle Rocket. There's a perfect balance of comedy and passion, and this movie works great for both sexes. It's certainly not your typical rom-com, but that's what makes it so brilliant.
