True Detective (2014)
New Twist on Cop/Mystery Drama
It is nice to see a TV series which such caliber and brutal reality to a point where we question ourselves in the end. In this show, we have two detectives investigating serial murders and with every clue they follow, they always seem to reach a dead end. Every cop show I have seen such as Law & Order, Homicide:Life on the Street, or even Blue Bloods, they always end with the mystery solved. This mystery is inside an enigma in which the two detectives are being interviewed 20 years later about it and wonder why is it happening again? First we have Det. Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) who is an introvert trying to blend with the police force but disturbs everyone with his views of the world. We also have Det. Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson), who is the opposite who is likable, loving husband and father of two daughters, and has a taste for cheating on his wife to mask his depression and sadness of the case he is investigating. McConaughey delivers another great performance with a combination of mystery and awe. He delves deep into character to a point where you forget the bad movies he was in like Fool's Gold or Surfer Dude. You feel a sense of sorrow and despair with this character when he cares about his job but not about his own sanity or happiness. Harrelson is just the same, giving another great performance with realism and despair of his own reality. Not since The Messenger, did I see Harrelson in such a performance. He shows us a man who is letting a case so horrific and so disturbing that he is letting it interfere with his family life. His character wants so much of the simple life that he is masking the reality of his choices in order to feel a sense of calmness in his home. In reality, he is letting his affair and job undermine his own reality. With a sense of reality and great shots of Louisiana, this show stands alone as one of the best series ever come from HBO. Mystery centers us into this show and awe is what we receive. I recommend this show with the highest honors.
The Wrestler (2008)
Great Movie Great Acting Rourke should have gotten Oscar
I have to say without Mickey Rourke this movie would have bombed. I know a lot of people are disappointed with the ending but sometimes human nature is unpredictable and that is what we didn't expect out of this film. The unpredictability is what makes this film worth watching. Mickey Rourke is worth watching especially Marisa Tomei. Life is a tragedy if you don't know how to live it yourself. Yes this movie is a tragedy but that does not mean you can't take the good from the bad. Either way for anyone give it a try. I do know that a lot of people like this movie because of its depiction of wrestling as a sport and its realism toward what happens to some wrestlers when they fade into obscurity. Mickey Rourke should won the Oscar hands down. Everyone I suggest you rent this movie and see how you feel after watching this film.
