Gettobakkâzu dakkanya (2002)

It's so good it should never end!

8 December 2005 - 13 out of 13 users found this review helpful.

The title was not really catchy at first, but the entire show told a different story. Upon seeing a preview of Get Backers in a new cartoon channel, Animax, I first thought they were just people accepting jobs to avenge for their clients, as in "getting back at enemies." I watched the first episode, and it turns out they are actually retrievers, taking back lost or stolen things. The Get Backers duo is basically composed of a mind (Mido Ban) and a heart (Ginji Amano).

Ban is technically the leader, who is smart and initially has two powers, the 200-kilogram grip called "Snake Bite," and the Evil Eye, which is some sort of hypnosis making victims imagine different sorts of things for one minute while something else is actually being done around them without their knowing. More of his abilities can be known as the series goes on.

Ginji, on the other hand, is a compassionate airhead who generates electricity. It may sound rather uninviting, since there have been many other super heroes who can conduct electricity as well, like Static Shock. But don't let this discourage you; Ginji is a very interesting and lovable character. He may seem like a pushover to Ban, but the latter looks after him most of the time, and both are even more powerful if they sense their partner to be in trouble.

There are many more powerful characters in the series, each with their own distinct abilities. The one I liked most is Akabane, aside from Ban. He may have a lusty thirst for fighting, but he is bloodily funny for some reason. Shido is the one I dislike. He takes pride in settling fights without help from anyone, but around half of his work is done by his animal followers. He sort of contradicts his own beliefs this way. However, with his great love and utmost protection for Madoka, the blind violinist, it still makes sense for him to be in the show. I was also annoyed by Fudou, who wants nothing but dead enemies. He only wants to kill people, a total demon. Besides, villains have to be a pain in the neck, so all the more the audience wants him to be defeated.

The sound is very good and story is smooth flowing as well - a perfect blend of action, comedy and drama. We shall see many flashbacks on the characters as we watch on, which are equally interesting and can even make some of us sentimental to our own past. Not only do we get to laugh a lot; we can also learn many principles in life, even without any of those superhuman powers.

If there was a downside to this show, it's because it has to end. Well, the series wasn't actually concluded yet. There are many questions left unanswered, stones still unturned. There have been rumors of a second set of episodes, but it's been around three years since this series was created. We can do nothing but hope for more.

Flight of the Phoenix (2004)

What's with Quaid?

13 February 2005 - 2 out of 4 users found this review helpful.

His latest movies suck. Cold Creek Manor is definitely a waste of time, with no twist, suspense whatsoever. Now it's strike two with Flight of the Phoenix. What's new with this film anyway? The plot is much like Alive, except that they didn't have to devour one another. There are very rare comedy scenes. Almost the entire movie was such a drag, no action or climax until the part where they already flew the rebuilt plane while being chased by the Mongol nomads, whatever you call them. Going back to Quaid, as far as I know, he's into making a comeback, right? Well, I don't think his recent films will make that quite possible. C'mon Dennis, please accept films with much better story lines and overall quality. We already like your acting, but the movies must be good in the first place.

Cold Creek Manor (2003)

No f***ing twist!

27 December 2003 - 2 out of 2 users found this review helpful.

**** Some possible spoilers ****

I knew from the start that this movie would suck. For one thing, a lot of horror/suspense movies are corny lately, and Cold Creek is no exception.

I expected some twist in the latter part of the film, like the bad guy isn't Dale after all or something. But there was no twist at all, which added to the already disappointing plot.

Lastly, they're not fooling anyone with the Jeep they burned. It's actually an older model of the one really used throughout the movie.

Cold Creek Manor is simply a waste of an excellent cast. Very bad comeback for Quaid and Stone.

How to Deal (2003)

Too boring and inappropriate casting

27 December 2003 - 3 out of 6 users found this review helpful.

After seeing A Walk to Remember, I was confident that Mandy's new film will also be good, but it was rather disappointing. Within the 1.5-or-so-hour film, there were only a few 2-second laughs and nothing more.

I also thought that Mandy will be singing in the film, but since she didn't, a prettier, more proportioned actress would have been more fit for the role. Same thing with her leading man.

The only thing nice here is the Can We Still Be Friends revival in the soundtrack.

The Tuxedo (2002)

Not as funny as I expected

27 December 2003 - 28 out of 46 users found this review helpful.

Disappointingly, this film was a step down for both Jackie Chan and Jennifer-Love, whom I actually idolize. Chan was trying to be funny while being 'manipulated' by the tux, but turned out to be corny (at least for me). I'm not sure if he's already too old for the job, but if he goes on with his upcoming movies like that, his name will just fade away from the movie industry, and the likes of Jet Li will very much make a better replacement for him.

The movie also proved that Love-Hewitt wasn't a comedienne after all. She's no match to Reese Witherspoon when it comes to actress versatility (the latter can do both funny and sad movies). She should just stick to drama or other pretty-girl films.

Houseguest (1995)

Too much funny scenes here

9 December 2003

It's quite a shame this film is way underrated at 5.5 stars over 10. While a dumb boring movie like How to Deal gets .2 star higher, I guess many of those who watched Houseguest simply have bad taste.

Oh well, Sinbad's talent can never be better than what he exhausted here. Really funny how he can't help but grab that McDonald's burger from his friend's hands. And that splash of soft-serve ice cream scene, that was hilarious.

I want to see more Sinbad films in the future.

Road Trip (2000)

Trashy but fun

23 November 2003 - 0 out of 1 users found this review helpful.

I just can't appreciate Tom Green's humor that much. Though he's not as corny as Austin Powers, his comedy is just not my cup of tea. That scene where he licked this white mouse is rather sickening.

The real fun was brought by Seann William Scott, and I liked that dialogue of his when he was frank enough to say to the nerd guy that yeah, just lend us your car, something like that. But what I didn't like in his part was that gross alternative for sex which he asked to be done to him in the sperm bank.

Breckin Meyer was the serious, suave character here, and I guess he carried out his role pretty well.

The juicy part was not the locker room scene, but the scene where Amy Smart went topless and had sex with Breckin Meyer, which was thought to be videotaped. But I wish she had just worn a polo or blouse and unbuttoned it in front of him, but braless is still the way to go!

Overall rating: 5.5/10

Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000)

Crappy story-line. Raching scene that could deceive.

13 September 2003 - 0 out of 1 users found this review helpful.

The first phrase:

It's quite nutty for Memphis to gather 50 or so men to work for people no more than 5 who are threatening the lives of his mother and brother. For one thing, Memphis and his gang could just go to their hideout and kill them all. Certainly, the movie focused more on the cars. Even so we can use a much better story-line.

The second phrase:

When you use nitrous oxide in your car, it will certainly drink a huge amount of gas. Accelerating hard to over 160 miles an hour will surely make the fuel gauge dive. In other words, it's impossible to Memphis to travel all those miles without refuelling.
