The Gates (2010)
Viewing with Caution
Granted I am only basing my Opinion on the Pilot. This show seems to suffer from an Identity Crisis. I for one do not buy into the theory that ABC is jumping on any bandwagons over True Blood (romance) Vampire Diaries (romance) or Twilight (... romance).
You really have 3 story lines going on, Gated Community with Dark Secrets (been there, done that). Police officer looking for a new start in a new place (been there, done that). And then the 'Kids Element' (90210, One Tree Hill ......) been there, done that. The Supernatural Elements don't define the Show, only the characters and that barely.
Does it have Promise? Too soon to tell, it will depend on which storyline they try to mature. It's only my opinion but if they try to keep all three running the show will not last a full season
Legend of the Seeker: Prophecy (2008)
Not what readers of the Book would expect
The Legend of the Seeker (at least as much of it as is shown in the 30 minute preview of this first episode) Differs in many ways from what is told in Wizards first Rule. Those who insist that a movie/TV show 'must' follow the details will find a wealth of things to dislike. Having just recently finished reading the last book of the Sword of Truth I can understand why they would object.
However, If you can set aside preconceived notions and watch the series unfold and tell it's story in it's own way without expecting it to follow the books you will find much to like.
It is not a series about the books, it is a re-telling of the story for a TV Audience. And in at least my opinion has the potential to tell the story well.
edit: sadly after watching this episode in full as well as the second episode "Destiny" I would not recommend the show to anyone who has already read the books.
Legend of the Seeker (2008)
unwise to draw too much from teaser clip
All any of us have so far is a cast list (incomplete) and a rather short teaser trailer, lets not go off the deep end judging the whole series based on it.
1.) If you like Terry Goodkind as an Author do you seriously think he would gamble his reputation (to say nothing of vision for Sword of Truth saga) by allowing his name to be connected with this series if he did not approve of what they were doing?
2.) No Movie much less Television series can completely represent a written novel (many things just don't translate visually). Many things cannot be shown, and others must be added for dramatic impact.
3.) Casting decisions? Ever consider that they might have done the best they could to match the characters in a dramatic sense rather than Visual, or that they were limited to some degree by who was available, willing, and also able to dramatically portray the characters? Give the show a chance, watch it, if you like it good, if you don't then you can post comments about what in your 'professional' opinion they could have done better.
