Better than expected!
13 April 2008
I read a short commentary about the Darjeeling Limited before it was finished. It seemed interesting, and with the cast assembled I felt it would probably be a good movie. Of course, when I did finally see it, I was excited to see it was another Wes Anderson creation. Following three brothers on a spiritual journey to find their way back to each other, couldn't be more realistic. Siblings often know each other so well, and yet they never really know each other well enough, as is the truth with these three brothers. Still grieving over the death of their father, they argue and come together over and over again. They confront their mother along the way and each other about the events that followed the death of their father. When it is all said and done, no three brothers can come together and find such a spiritual bond as these three. I cried, I laughed, and I fell in love with the music. I can't see any other actors playing in the roles of these three quirky brothers and I can't believe how amazing I felt when the movie was over. I got the message and I hope you do too. I enjoyed this movie so much, I added it to my collection.

Shutter (II) (2004)

Do not miss this Asian film!
13 April 2008
Clearly a happy couple that has a traumatic accident one evening can't remain happy afterwords. But as Jane and Tun try to continue on with their lives, the lingering thoughts of that night begin to haunt them. Tun is played by the very sexy Ananda Everingham. He is the good looking hero that seems as mystified after the accident as his girlfriend Jane does. But while he is more willing to push aside his fear and try to ignore the photos that have evidence of a haunting spirit, Jane is not. Jane, played by Natthaweeranuch Thongmee, is wanting to face the truth head on no matter what the outcome. In doing so, she may find out more than she wants to know. While this movie seems predictable as many haunting movies are, there are still some surprises in store for the watchers. This movie has been compared to Ringu, but other than a vindictive spirit of a woman wronged, there is no comparison. Shutter can stand on it's own as a good thriller. And Ananda Everingham stands out as a leading man to watch. He not only seems very natural in front of the camera, but his boyish good looks won't hurt his career at all! (Wink) I enjoyed this movie and have added it to my Asian Horror collection.

Your hair will stand on end...

Warning: Spoilers
Although this movie seems to be a little cheesy with respect to the characters of the store owners, much of the rest of the movie is extremely creepy. Right away there is a sense that all is not well in this mini-mart. The people working in it and even the customers are at risk to walk out the front door and take something horrifying home with them. While the main characters are searching for an answer as to what or who is haunting this establishment, only the crazy woman with the baby carriage seems to understand the real inner workings of this mini-mart. When the craziest character in the movie has all the answers, you know anything can happen. What gives this movie the creeps is the three screen splice that shows three different characters as they leave the mini-mart and something is leaving with them. During the three screen splice we are listening to an anchorman with the up to date gory news of the day. As he reads the gruesome details the characters are becoming tomorrows news! This movie is a favorite of mine because each time you watch it, you still feel your hair stand on end, again and again.

A Grade 'A' movie in any language
13 April 2008
This movie rated high for me because it has all of the great detective movie qualities. An evil killer played by Cho Seung-woo and two detectives (Yeom Jeong-a and Jee Jin-hee) who are on the tail of his copycat killer. Much like the American styled Lethal Weapon, there is comedy thrown in with this very serious story. Jee Jin-hee's character is similar to the character played by Mel Gibson in that he is emotionally charged, sarcastically humorous with his tough guy antics, and ruggedly good looking. Yeom Jeong-a plays the very serious and emotionally guarded female detective trying to do her job in a male dominated career and with the loss of her lover still tearing at her heart strings. As these two detectives get closer to the copycat they also find a friendship growing between them. Both have tragic tales to tell and when they do it becomes apparent that these killings are close to home for both of them. Cho-Seung-woo plays evil in a very calm creepiness. He is much like the American Hannibal Lecter. As much as you want to dislike his character for his crimes, it's easy to become entranced by his charisma. Another character that seems to be the off beat detective that everyone enjoys to have around is Detective Park (Ji-ru Sung). He plays the true comedian in the bunch. He is the one most likely to fall down on the job, and boy, does he ever! Detective Park is the only one who seems to understand both Detective Kang and Detective Kim. This movie not only has realistic gory scenes, but a great musical score that sets the tone for this intriguing thriller. Being a fan of horror and mystery, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie so much I had to buy it!

A movie you can't watch alone!
13 April 2008
As a fan of Asian horror, I had bought this movie before the American re-make. I was pleasantly scared to the bone by this chiller. Everyone I introduced to this movie found it difficult to watch, because although the gore is toned down, the spookiness is turned up. When i discovered an American re-make was coming out, my first reaction was, "you can't re-make perfection." Just in case I was wrong, I eventually watched the American version and was as disappointed as I thought I would be. So far in the Asian movie re-makes I have yet to see a movie that is as compelling in a thriller or a horror as the Asian version. The real obsessive movie fans will have the Asian films in their collection, not the English copycats. Pulse is an excellent movie if watched in it's true language with subtitles, in the original version.
