Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Fantasy made with love by fans.
A film with few pretensions that had the misfortune of sharing the billboard with a blockbuster tank like Super Mario.
It has a basic but effective premise, simple and crude humor but it works. A good cast with excellent performances and that makes the film recommended.
The visual effects are good and you can see the love for the role in each of the scenes, you can see the hand of people who want the product to work and not be merely a low-ball movie.
Despite not being a box office success, it has worked very well in streaming which gives hope of having a second part, this time, I hope better than this one, which is happening but barely.
Vinland Saga (2019)
One of the most epic and incredible stories ever told.
One of the 3 great works of manga that had the label of "impossible to adapt" along with Vagabond and Berserk.
As an anime fan, when I came into contact with season 1, I was amazed: a story of revenge told over the years, with a perfect and real historical framework and with scenes of violence of all kinds.
I think we all thought that season 1 was unbeatable until the unthinkable happened: season 2 complements, improves and is superior to the previous one.
How can there be such a drastic change in the registry? We go from a story of revenge to one of despair, depression and improvement.
"I have no enemies", the mantra that Thorfin repeats over and over again and that develops in a setting as unlikely as a farm.
It's hard, it's raw, it's violent, it's depressing, yet it's incredible.
Thorfin's journey, faithfully accompanied by Einar, with his fall to hell and his return to redemption under the watchful eye of Thors and Askelad from beyond. A Canute who goes from being a spoiled child to being a complete despot and calculator.
All this puts Vinland Saga as one of the 3 best anime series of the year 2023 along with Jujutsu Kaisen and Pluto in my opinion.
I hope 4 years don't pass between seasons like it already did, but on the other hand if MAPPA returns with this quality of story and animation I won't mind waiting...
Gen V (2023)
How to do things well in a successful franchise.
It is not easy to find a Spin off of a successful series that knows how to live up to it. Much less that it surpasses it in some aspects. This is precisely what happens with Gen V.
Spiritually it's like watching The Boys but it also feels different considering the setting in which it takes place.
An explosive first chapter and a plot that develops very well.
With fair and necessary cameos, with the gore and risqué scenes that the franchise has already accustomed us to.
What has been achieved with that universe is not simple and I am grateful that it is already known when and how the mother series will end.
I really liked the characters of Marie and Jordan, as well as Andre (it is a shame that the actor died) although we still don't know how his story will be carried out.
As season 4 of The Boys progresses, we will see how the events of Gen V will connect and perhaps the key to defeating Homelander.
A must for fans and followers.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Good time for video game adaptations.
We are in a good time for animation.
Perhaps one of the surprises of 2023 at the box office along with Barbie-Heimer.
Nothing new in the story of Mario, Luigi, Peach and the others. However, it is a delivery that has everything, heart, soul, good fan service and an animation that is off the charts.
It has a great soundtrack and Jack Black breaks it with "Peaches, Peaches" which was a meme and very viral for months. A separate fact was the non-nomination of this song at the Oscars (regrettable).
I hope that the fact that it was a box office success does not detract from the quality of the next installments.
Highly recommended for nostalgic adults and children (and not so children).
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
Absolute decline of a universe that is far from being what it was
In direct line with the decline of Marvel since End Game.
To think that the first Ant Man movie had been a pleasant surprise and, although the second had been average to a fault, this third part exceeds expectations (for the worse).
We can approach from many places because he is terrible.
From performances, implausible script, the presentation of a bad guy like Kang who instead of being scary ends up being defeated because that's how it was written.
We are introduced to a Cassie Lang who has no charisma, a Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer who are just collecting a check and nothing more. Even Paul Rudd who is always good fails in his performance. Cameo by Bill Murray is forgettable and I could continue describing for parts.
At the special effects level it is also a disaster. The problems that Marvel has presented in these years at that level are well known, but here they were overcome, once again, for the worse. Look at what MODOK is, see what the quantum realm looks like, the facial rejuvenation and an endless number of failures that put this movie in the top 3 or top 5 of worst MCU projects in 15 years.
As with The Marvels, She Hulk, Echo or Secret Invasion, Marvel has to change, if it doesn't it is destined for a failure of biblical proportions...
Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf (2024)
Quite generic, to pass a while and nothing more
It occurred to me to watch this really unpretentious series.
From the same school as Kengan Ashura and Baki and all of them recognized (or not) daughters of Street Fighter and other older series.
The premise is very basic, but something that caught my attention in the trailers were the fight scenes...and what a great surprise it really was.
Not to be confused, it is a rather bad/generic series with a main character who is not the same as the manga or games and who has rather poor development.
The fights and how the plot develops don't make much sense, but the fundamental point that I have been saying about the fights is what stands out for it, above all. The movements are very real, I don't know if they are made with real models, but it does seem like it. At times with very good animation and fluidity, at others, not so much.
It has blood, it has violence (not very justified at times) and unmemorable characters.
It entertained me, but I guess it's just a niche series and only those interested will watch it.
Eric (2024)
Wasted opportunity.
Mixed feelings about this series.
On the one hand, an interesting premise, with a great setting and a pretty good cast.
But on the other hand, a not so...perfect execution, let's say.
We have a plot of the disappearance of a child and what that entails for his parents, which is interesting but which in many moments takes a backseat, giving more relevance to Ledroit's police plot.
Of course they are both interesting but at times they make the series have many open plot lines. And as is known, if we try to cover so much at any one time, more so in a series of 8 chapters, we will have cracks.
Vincent's family drama with his fall into excess, vices and addictions is extremely interesting, with his subconscious in the form of "Eric." We see him in decline and then in his rebirth, I think he is the only character who has a correct evolution.
It is hardly credible that his son would arrive safely after so many days. For a moment I thought it was all in his imagination and I even believed that it would be played on that side, which would have given a macabre turn to the series. I don't like and I don't believe the acting of Vincent's wife, nor the family plot that develops.
On the other hand, I consider the performance of the Ledroit actor to be very strong with his personal story and all the corruption that exists in the New York police. Marlon's case, which is what ends up unclogging the whole ending, is fine, but what about his mother and the final speech where he blames society and time for what happened to his son is not very credible, completely forgetting that he had 14 years and the bad life he led.
In any case, and I reiterate, they seem like two totally different plots to me and that when you think that they are going to come together, under the fact that Edgar's story intersects with Ledroit's parallel investigation, a more "friendly" solution is chosen and less "believable."
Missed opportunity to have one of the best series of the year... special mention to the graffiti artist who was fundamental to the plot and disappeared without pain or glory...
Dune (2021)
When the maladaptable can be adapted. Villeneuve is my pastor ...
It may be one of those maladaptable sagas was defeated. Villeneuve achieved the impossible: adapting the epic history of Frank Herbert that so inspired other famous works.
It is a colossal movie, from the stage, the script, the performances, meet the best of Hollywood and the result is majestic.
It can be accused of slow, it is, at the beginning and half of the movie but for a good reason, to give us a context of everything that is happening. It has action, political intrigue, romance and many epic moments.
It really is the lord of the rings of this generation and a story that will inevitably go down in history, even more with its second part equal (or more) yet.
Reacher (2022)
A bet that went very well
As a fan of the literary saga of Lee Child Delire when the first movie with Tom Cruise was released based on the book "A shot". Although he was not the actor that one imagined by the literary descriptions if he had the charism and the presence (despite the height).
The second movie was a failure and disappointment, so I thought the franchise would have no more adaptations.
When Amazon gives the green light to the project in series format and with Alan Ritchson as Reacher was a wonderful sensation.
These two seasons have adapted two very good books and as the franchise is handled more or less as anthology, the order will never import.
Ritchson has the presence, charisma and the physical bearing, we do not need to be a good actor, we do not need the series to have "Plot Twist" elaborate, it goes to what is going and that is very much appreciated. It is like returning to the series and action movies of the ´80s and ´90s without fear or shame.
Not to be confused, it is a very good series, it is very well written and the characters are charismatic and that is appreciated.
Among so many products that are rather an agenda declared to have one that in simple and sincere with what that entails is a success and this is demonstrated by the metrics making this series of the best of the platform.
I hope soon a third season and see how far you will adapt.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
When animation gives lessons to Live Action
Animated films have never been my strong suit, I admit it. That's why I didn't go to see this movie at the premiere. It wasn't until I heard the recommendations and my fanaticism for the character and Marvel that I decided to give it a chance. What to say? It was a great decision!!! The story, the script, direction, animation, and its big heart. It really is a must for fans, a fresh, new story, broad in its universe, with many characters but without being overused. Kingpin as a villain to match and a lot of sequences to remember. It has just the right amount of humor and drama, a perfect mix between the joviality of Miles and the depression of Peter B. Parker. Also, with a sequel to match, it makes this combo something that is the best it has ever been seen.
Ahsoka (2023)
Less than Andor, definitely more Boba Fett and Kenobi
For all Star Wars fans, and mainly those of us who have seen the animated series, the character of Ahsoka Tano means a lot.
That's why when the news broke that his series would be coming out, we all saw it with some concern. It wasn't until we saw Rosario Dawson portrayed in the Mandalorian that our doubts dissipated and became hope.
The series itself has quite a few problems, mainly with pacing at times. However, I can say that I really liked it, there is fantastic casting for Sabin and Hela, and Thrawn and Ezra also look exactly the same as what we saw in Rebels. And perhaps that's where the problem lies, it's a very niche series for those of us who watched the animated series, at times things are taken for granted that could have been explained more.
Beyond that, the evolution and path of Ahsoka, with that incredible chapter when we see her in what could be (or not) the World between Worlds that we previously saw in animation.
We have 3 sides clearly marked with that middle ground that implies the presence of Baylan Skoll (rest in peace Ray Stevenson) and Shin Hati who at times are important antagonists and who leave many doubts thinking about the future of the series.
The presence of Grand Admiral Thrawn by Lars Mikkelsen is also a very high point of the season.
For what I said above, I consider Ahsoka a good product, it is not on par with Andor for example, but it is not Bobba Fet or Kenobi either, which were huge disappointments.
I will be looking forward to the next season and seeing the resolution of this story.
Gojira -1.0 (2023)
Faithful demonstration that with desire you can do things well
Among so many Kaijuus movies and so much material about this franchise, it is a pleasant surprise to find Minus One.
Not in vain is the success it had, raising 100 million dollars with an investment of "only" 10 million, but also because of how good it looks and the famous critics (with an Oscar in hand).
It is not the classic Godzilla story focused on the monster per se but rather it is part of a deep history such as that of post-World War II Japan.
The human drama of a country devastated structurally but also spiritually represented in the character of Koichi whose fear of dying prevented him from fulfilling his role as Kamikaze.
We witness the evolution of him as a character, as he is a man devastated by the events on the island that led to the death of everyone except him and the mechanic. But we also see how little by little he regains the will to live at the hands of Noriko and little Akiko.
The political plot and social criticism that comes hand in hand with the film is very interesting, which is strongly nationalist but in a good way...Godzilla is a product of the Japanese and they are the ones who must take care of it.
Although the movie has its conveniences, the drama and the visuals above all are very good.
It really left a very good taste in my mouth and we hope to soon see more films of this type in this genre that is not always well received.
Creed II (2018)
The saga should have ended here...
With Creed II I have a problem, it is that I want the focus to be on Rocky and Ivan Drago and not on their children. But I also know what it should be, but basically the meaning of the movie is the reunion between the two former boxers, therefore the rest takes a backseat. I know it would have been counterproductive but I would have liked a more tense atmosphere between the two of them and perhaps, also, some clean fists to liven up the plot. But hey, in the end Rocky is given closure and I think that's where the saga should have ended, no more, no less. Everything that comes later will inevitably be of lower quality due to the lack of the franchise's alma mater. Otherwise it is an entertaining movie and one that Rocky fans will love.
Echo (2023)
Marvel's decline continues
How bad can Marvel be that they think a series like this can be interesting?
How can you believe that a series that applies "clickbait" with Daredevil is a series about shamans?
Have we fans been underestimated for a long time?
All this occurs to me when thinking and watching this series.
Disastrous in its conception, disastrous in its execution. The most interesting thing was seeing Daredevil and Kingpin during the trailer and nothing else.
Be careful, until chapter 2-3 one would think that it was a violent series, with a protagonist with 0 charisma but hey, we would have some dark plot.
Suddenly out of the blue, a series that no one can recommend and that should be eliminated from the canon.
I have seen all the MCU products since 2008 and we know that since "End Game" we have had almost no good products (with the permission of Loki and perhaps Spiderman, which we know was more fanservice than anything else).
He stopped doing what gave Marvel so much profit, the connections.
It cannot be that for 4 years we have not known anything about some characters, movies with characters that did not appear again, multiple projects to which of all the least connected and more in line with a social agenda.
If Marvel doesn't change its ending it will be scandalous, maybe the Xmen, Daredevil and the Fantastic Four have the solution, maybe not, I just know that projects like Echo, Secret Invasion, She-Hulk, etc., are the ruin of this universe.
Halo (2022)
Big change between season 1 and 2, sometimes listening to the fans is worth it
It's incredible how a series can change so much from one season to the next.
Although I was never a regular at the games, I am not ignorant about the comments of the first season and the complaints from fans.
It had entertained me personally but it didn't blow my mind so to speak.
However, this second season was totally different. From an explosive beginning, through an incredible chapter 4 and perhaps the best of the series until the end of the season with the introduction of the "Flood".
Brutal development of many characters, deaths that are totally justified and make themselves felt. That feeling that everyone (except "Masterchief") could die was very latent throughout the season.
Excellent introduction and development of Ackerson, Parangosky as the most hated and with the worst ending and the addition of Private Perez made the season much more bearable.
Everything that bothered me during season 1 was changed and although the special effects are sometimes very average, all the fight sequences with continuous shots and choreography seem super consistent to me.
Many expected Kwan-Ha's death but I think it's very good where she took it and I think many will change their opinion regarding the character.
Of the rest of the Spartans, I liked Kai although at times I wanted to hit her, Riz was up to the task and the death of that great man like Vannak hurt, mainly because of his shape.
As for Coventant, it seems to me that both the Inquisitor and Makee are very good as antagonists and her ending, contrasting in thought and opinion with John, leaves an interesting conflict for future seasons.
I think Halsey, her daughter, and Cortana had less exposure compared to season 1, giving more screen to Soren and his family, which seems like a success to me.
I consider that this series should continue because its creators were aware of their mistakes and corrected them, I would like to see much more about it.
Creed (2015)
A good return that does not forget the roots
After 10 years without movies from the Rocky franchise, she returned refreshed. A great Michael B. Jordan but also a Great Stallone. Personally, I really liked it, but the franchise is Rocky, so without it there is no movie. The entire training and promotion sequence is very well carried out, Rocky's lymphoma and all the consequences of his treatment are very well portrayed. Every minute in the ring is extremely enjoyable and in my opinion it is a great movie. Recommended for all fans of the saga.
It may not be at the level of the first films in the saga but it is an interesting refresh that adds a lot to the lore. Both this movie and its sequel are very good in that, although the next ones that will come seem unnecessary to me...I repeat the saga is ROCKY BALBOA.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
How to make a triumphant return of a saga and not die trying
As a fan of the saga I always wondered why it took so long for this movie to appear.
Without Mel Gibson, who knows if he could live up to any of the previous 3.
Nothing else suggested how incredible this event was going to be.
More than 2 hours of justified violence in a maelstrom of action that never stops until the end.
Let's not fool ourselves, the movie goes where it goes and is not ashamed to show it.
Tom Hardy lives up to the character of Max, his presence intimidates and makes you believe that he is the same as always.
Charlize Theron as Furiosa sublime, stealing the spotlight in much of the plot. Furthermore, with the prequel that has just been released, her character is even more favored by giving us a context that we did not have.
Joe is immortalized as a great antagonist and Nicholas Hoult's character who also has great moments during the film.
It is very difficult for a sequel to be as up to par as "Fury Road", a great example of how to make an empowered female character and make you believe it, a great example that this kind of cinema can be made in this era, a great example of that George Miller should be on par with his more famous contemporaries Spiellberg, Scorsese and company.
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to see this wonder in theaters at this time.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
It is appreciated that you try to shine with your own light
A movie perhaps unnecessary, or perhaps not. George Miller's vision continues to expand and, unfortunately, at 80 years old it is very difficult for us to continue seeing more material of this quality.
He had a complicated mission and that is to live up to "Fury Road" which was a great critical success (not so much at the box office) and in awards.
Furiosa's story is very interesting, she never wants to be a "Fury Road" 2 but tries to shine on her own by doing it partly, not all the time.
I was personally surprised by the division into acts and that the young Furiosa was there almost half of the movie.
I really like the character of Dementus and I think he is a great addition, even rivaling Immortan Joe.
Praetorian Jack is an interesting character with a painful death even though he is not shown explicitly.
Anya Taylor-Joy is very good but she is not Charlize Theron and that is quite noticeable. If I like her work as an actress and everything she gives, it seems like a very good character development.
Great nods to other films in the saga and with a pace that is very fast at times and slower at others.
My biggest problem was with the special effects that are noticeable in this movie but hey, in particular a quite enjoyable experience in the cinema and I hope we can enjoy more of this universe that has many fans like me.
The Exorcist (1973)
Work of art like few others of its kind...or none at all.
A visual marvel, an immersive experience that addresses themes from religion, the supernatural, depression and other topics. Full of symbolism, maximum tension and a terror that over the years has not been able to be replicated exactly, not even in the franchise itself. Very solid performances with excellent direction and script. Necessary experience for any film fan.
Incredible characters like Father Karras, Merrin and Det Kinderman.
It is a very faithful adaptation of Blattys' book but with freedoms at a narrative and visual level that make the experience even more immersive.
This movie and its universe are so incredible that even today it has not been able to be surpassed within the franchise (with the permission of Exorcist III, which I really like) and perhaps not within horror either.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
When things are done well, results inevitably come.
This is a great example of how to enhance a well-known franchise and take it to unsuspected limits.
The history and great origin of the first ape and legend as Caesar was for this universe.
A beginning that may seem minimalist but as the plot progresses it reaches us directly to the heart because of everything that Cesar has to experience.
From the death of his mother to protect him, how James Franco's character rescues him and how he is raised with love until the inevitable comes. And with this the entire cascade of events that lead to the spread of the virus that eliminates 90% of the world's population and gives us the ideal context for the development of this world.
A separate paragraph is the visual by Andy Serkis, what a great motion capture and how well it is done that it moves us.
With what came later it is clear that when you want to do things well, they are done.
More franchises should or should copy the example of how a well-written script can lead us to these works of art.
It may be better? Without a doubt, but as a prologue to the following films it is not bad to start with such solidity.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
A new movie in the franchise that never disappoints
When you read or hear that a new "Planet of the Apes" movie is coming out, you wonder if there are more stories to tell than those already told previously.
Although this franchise may sound repetitive (except for Tim Burton's version from 2001) it always surprises for the better.
The previous trilogy focused on Caesar was already really surprising and this new version starts quite well.
We know that the visuals will be incredible, much more so when you see that the budget is half that of any Blockbuster.
A not so original story, it is true, but marked by tragedy, the hero's journey and the search for consummated revenge.
The character of Noah and his growth from being an innocent ape to everything he ends up being.
The character of Nova, perhaps the most surprising thing about the script and development, seeing how she deceives, how she murders and how she doesn't mind harming Noah's family in order to achieve her goal and prevent Proximus Cesar from getting everything he wants from him. Silo you are trying to enter.
In the end it leaves us with a feeling of hope that there may finally be an understanding between humans and apes although seen and considering the final wink the only thing that is known for sure is that the conflict will continue...
The Terminator (1984)
A work of art that marked a genre, actor and director
I must have seen this movie a thousand times.
It is a before and after in the history of science fiction.
It is a B movie that James Cameron managed to put in a place that few others have.
It's all, plot, incredible effects for the time, if we take out Arnold's performance we can say that it is incredibly acted (even the Austrian colossus is crazy like Terminator).
It is Sarah Connor's path to becoming from an ordinary woman to the most legendary warrior in the history of cinema alongside Ellen Ripley.
It is a film whose plot ages very well, it feels current, it shows all the fears we can have regarding AI and robotics.
It is, along with its second part, one of the best sagas without a doubt.
It's a shame what happened next, I want to believe that this movie was continued, but the 2019 game is the best story ever told in Science Fiction.
Afterwards we can discuss if it is plagiarism if it is not, blah blah, it is the faithful example of everything in the past that was better...
A Quiet Place (2018)
Cosmic terror on a farm with a pregnant woman
I've been wanting to see this movie for a while.
Although I had already taken some spoilers, I wanted to live the experience as fully as possible.
It is a simple story, it gets to the point and unfolds in 1 hour 28 minutes, but that does not mean it is fast or rushed.
The conflicts mark us well, the mystery surrounds the story, the characters develop a little and when we want to remember we are in the final act.
Personally, I really like the resolution, of course we are not going to discuss how it is possible that in that universe with this possible alien invasion someone would think of having a pregnancy...
Beyond that, you can see that it is a low-budget film beyond the well-known actors but that uses the effects and locations very well.
It is also a very good starting point for a universe and mythology in relation to history.
Highly recommended for lovers of the genre.
El caso Asunta (2024)
Slow and predictable series
This series is based on a very controversial and media case from a decade ago.
The death of a 12-year-old Chinese girl allegedly at the hands of her adoptive parents.
The plot starts well, it is a mystery, we begin to see the clues and we are introduced to the characters little by little, although with little depth. There is not much emphasis on the parents' story and we go straight to the crime itself, which is not bad, but in particular it would have been useful for me to know more about the mother's context (it is not mentioned that she was sick with lupus with the connotations in his behavior that it could have had).
It happens to me that as the plot progresses the narrative loses strength to the point that the last two chapters are the most boring and dense. I'm still trying to understand what exactly they wanted to do in the 5th in particular.
All this results in a quick resolution without any mystery, in the end only the facts are told as we know them.
Then everyone draws their own conclusions, a few credits at the end and that's it...
It is recommended to watch later videos of the case itself and its repercussions to fill in the gaps in the story.
Invincible: Atom Eve (2023)
May Amazon show more love to Invincible!!
Very much in line with the first season of Invincible and in the absence of news about the second season, Amazon launched this One Shot focused on the origins of Atom Eve which is really very good.
A raw story, a very interesting character and how she learns about her tragic past little by little.
It follows the tone of the original series and is super violent and with lines worthy of "The Boys" and although it does not completely explode, it becomes a very enjoyable visual experience.
I am not a reader of the comic but beyond the lack of interest that Amazon shows in the series, it is undeniable that the public responds and that each of us is interested in knowing more about this universe.
Hopefully these Spin offs continue to exist while we watch the progress of the mother series and enjoy more and more of this animation for adults that has marked a stage.
