Den of Thieves (2018)
Consider me entertained
I have 2 young kids and work full time so it's hard to find time to watch movies these days. If a movie isn't good I'll skip through it or just stop watching. I watched this from beginning to end. It was very engaging. A little over the top at times but I didn't mind. Best Butler movie since Machine Gun Preacher, maybe even 300.
I've been looking around for a while for a TV series or movie dedicated to telling the story of Einstein. I was quite happy after finding and watching the first season of Genius.
What an incredible production... from the acting to the sets to the writing. This show really is fantastic... bravo to the cast and crew.
To the naysayers complaining that every fact told in this show isn't correct, I think you're a scrooge. To translate a story like this, with so much depth and detail, into this medium does require some blurring of the lines. But overall this is really a glimpse into the life and times of Einstein, the greatest scientist and physicist the world has even known.
To the whiners complaining that this is a hollywoodized production, I'm guessing you only watch episode one, or could not get past it. There is most definitely some of that, it's the nature of the business, get over it.
I couldn't have asked for more out of a TV series.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
The lead actor is just bad
I was all for the casting of a female minority as the lead in a new Star Trek series, actually it's a refreshing change. But when I found out it was Sonequa Martin-Green as that lead my expectations dropped to the floor. As a fan of TWD, she was undoubtedly the worst actor on the show. Her acting always felt contrived, wooden, and just bad. Nevertheless I wanted to give the series a chance because I'm a big Star Trek fan.
After giving the show a chance, I'm disappointed to say my low expectations (about the lead) were correct. The poor acting skills of Sonequa Martin-Green take away from an otherwise good production.
You can make a debate about whether or not this series is true to Star Trek, but you can't make a debate about whether or not Sonequa Martin- Green is a good actor. It's like night and day.
The Good Doctor (2017)
Freddie Highmore is great but...
For a TV show Freddie Highmore really did his homework and plays the part very convincingly. I was getting into the show, and I don't mind suspending belief... but what happens in episode 3 on the car is flat out stupid... and I can't watch shows with bad writing for obvious reasons.
The Dark Tower (2017)
Pretty good but could have been so much better
All the negative reviews did this movie a favor (for me)... I went into it thinking it was going to be complete garbage but it was a pretty good production.
Even though it was very thin, I was entertained the entire film. But I was left wanting so much more. Having not read the book I can only imagine how frustrating this movie would be for those who had.
Along the same lines, the movie was too short, I wish they added an hour or so and used that time to build the story, dive into the characters, etc.
The Expanse (2015)
I should like this show but...
I like sci-fi. I especially like space sci-fi. I even like Thomas Jane. And I know I'm supposed to like this show but I just don't.
Scyfy went above and beyond to create an "expansive" universe in this retelling based on the series of books in the same name. But the show doesn't seem to know what it wants to be yet, or perhaps it does and it's just not working, or perhaps the vision of it is an acquired taste. There is too much going on and not enough at the same time. They're trying really hard but not hitting any marks.
In watching this show I feel like I'm at a fancy restaurant being force fed food I'm supposed to like. Perhaps it's just not for me.
A fun movie without logic to back it
Wanted had a lot going for it but lost track of that by trying to make a more action-packed matrix rip-off. The beginning of the movie is what captures the audience's attention by portraying the life of the main character that we can all relate to (unsatisfactory job, unsatisfactory relationship, and unsatisfactory life). Where the movie really goes wrong is failed logic, too many illogical assumptions that that audience has to buy into in order to follow the story-line. Some examples, there's no logical reason bullets can suddenly curve at the minds will. At least in the matrix there was a solid justification to anything out of the ordinary (i.e. the matrix wasn't the real world).
The ending, in my opinion, is a cheap shot... talking to the audience first-hand because they couldn't do it properly in the movie. If the message of movie can't be figured-out by the audience, yelling at them through the main character is only making it worse.
In conclusion, there were a lot of great sequences in this movie, and it's always fulfilling when you feel you can relate to the main character... but the absolute irrational physics-defying action- stuff just made me lose touch with the movie...
Completely unoriginal albeit entertaining enough
When I first found out JJ Abrams was helming this ship I set my sights a little lower. And I'm disappointed to say I was not disappointed. As a moviegoer I don't mind Abrams, he's especially good at making entertaining and well-crafted movies that make money. But as a fan of an existing "movie universe" I knew the end-product would be unoriginal. If there were such things as a conveyor belt / assembly line that could manufacture movies Abrams' model would surely be the very top of its class.
I will not go in to detail to avoid spoiling anything. It's a shame because the movie had a lot going for it. The cast of new characters and the actors that played them (particularly the female lead) were excellent and refreshing to watch. Also, it was a treat to see many of the original actors back to reprise their roles... though even this seems uninspired. The production-value was great, as expected. The special effects were great, as expected. Even the script was fine. But the story was so completely unoriginal, that I found myself going over it again and again afterwards trying to find some originality in it but there was little to be found. It was like they took the original episodes, changed a few variables around and recycled it for the 21st century audience.
On the bright-side perhaps using the same formula which made the original episodes work so well will adopt a whole new generation of young enthusiast fans.
