Mrs. Davis (2023)
How not to make a satire
This is rubbish. Utter, unadulterated rubbish. Poorly conceived, woefully written, ineptly directed and, accordingly, poorly acted.
Now, if you want to satirise you first need to have a modicum of intelligence. Satire is not a licence to invent new realities. If you do not understand the threats of AI and future technological developments you simply cannot produce a coherent commentary about them.
However, if you are a VERY forgiving viewer (as most viewers of series emanating from the US these days seem to be) you might be able to overlook logic, science and human behaviour. Then this series might just be for you.
Totally Completely Fine (2023)
What universe are you from?
Looking at some of the glowing reviews for this piece of rubbish makes you wonder what universe you (or they) are from.
From the outset the series seems utterly contrived and unrealistic. The writing is shoddy (and that is being very kind), the direction almost non-existent, and, unsurprisingly, the (over)acting is laughable.
We watched four episodes and could bear no more. We then watched the series Drops of God. And we were reassured that quality writing, direction and acting ARE possible in TV series.
We live in Australia and do not enjoy denigrating Australian productions, but rubbish is rubbish.
Ozark (2017)
Deteriorating
From lofty heights this series has slowly deteriorated. The acting carries much of the interest, but the story-line started to lack coherence a few seasons in. It might just be another example of flogging a good idea to death.
Minx (2022)
Woeful
We read the reviews and decided to give this show a go. Well, we stuck with it for 4 episodes and then concluded that we are from another universe from many reviewers.
Unfunny, strained and inane. The male nudity just compounds the inanity. But we suspect that it was included just to be 'sensational'. Without it the show would be seen to be the emperor with no clothes, so to speak.
How HBO can put such drivel to air amazes us.
Barry (2018)
Brilliant
Very dark but relatable. This a a really rewarding series, with a complex character at the centre. Loveable people can do dreadful things.
We just love it!
Severance (2022)
Terrific stuff
We loved watching this series. Clever and convincing look at a dystopian future, which might not be so far away.
Strongly recommended viewing. Great writing, direction and acting.
