Mickey 17 - An enjoyable journey from Bong June Ho, director of Parasite and Snowpiercer. In cinemas March 7th.
Set in 2054, Mickey 17 is a Sci-Fi based on the Mickey7, the 2022 novel written by Edward Ashton. Mickey is part of a crew sent to colonize planet Nilfheim where they're at liberty to use practices banned on earth, namely cloning. But how exactly does this work and who will they meet on the Nilfheim?
Bong June Ho's stamp is apparent as he seamlessly blends Sci-Fi, dread and comedy into a package that asks profound social questions concerning humanity, colonisation, cloning, science, religion and more. The world we're introduced to is somehow believable for the most part despite some excentric characters and even more excentric moments.
The story and visuals are backed by excellent performances from the cast. Robert Pattison is on top form and the script affords him the chance to show off his versatility. Similarly, Mark Ruffalo once again reminds us that he can deliver comedic performances as well his more grounded performances whilst Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun and Toni Collette were all a lot of fun.
Mickey 17 is a fun watch, that delivers strong performances and poses some worthwhile questions. Whilst some of these may be familiar the overall package feels like a unique one.

The Gorge is an Apple Original sci-fi action thriller. The East and West each send a highly trained operative to watch other either side of a gorge on a year rotation. Nobody knows what's in the Gorge and the two operatives only form of communication is a monthly check in with their leaders via a telephone stationed in their watch tower.
I really enjoyed the premise of the movie. The buildup was slow which helped to foster the sense of isolation and perhaps a character study. However, once the dial was turned up a notch and the action arrived, it felt like the movie transitioned from a deep novel to a computer game and it never recovered from this.
The script switched to heavy exposition but despite this there were many things that felt unexplained. There were also times when the characters actions didn't quite add up with what was happening on screen.
Overall, The Gorge was a really interesting concept, with ok action and fun performances from Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy that whilst enjoyable, felt more like a missed opportunity.

It tried it's best to be a Captain American movie by focusing on the personal stories of its main characters whilst also being a political thriller. This worked well although one has to acknowledge that the characters in Brave New World do not carry the same grandeur as those in previous iterations. As a result, some scenes that were meant to carry significant weight failed to do so. This likely explains why Marvel tried to share the weight of this movie on the shoulders of several characters. However, a number of them came into their own by the time the credits rolled.
I ignored the marketing and the trailers so I didn't mind the time it took to introduce certain aspects of this film but others who indulged, may have a less enjoyable viewing experience. The action was a mixed bag, whilst the hand to hand combat looked laboured, other action scenes involving Captain America's suit and weapons were much more unique and enjoyable. The movie also managed to tie up or at least refer to several loose ends from across the MCU.
Overall Captain America Brave New World, whilst not a Marvel blockbuster of yesteryear, did manage to be an enjoyable entry into the MCU but struggles to shake off the shadow of the infinity saga.
