When Calls the Heart: Starry Nights (2023)
What a finale! Best ever! Wow!
Or should I say: Henry Gowan steals the episode? Wow, the actor who plays Henry was so so good. And that message of forgiveness and second chances was so poignant! And, not just forgiveness of others, but forgiveness of ourselves. Isn't that the hardest sometimes?
Thank you writers, directors, cast, and crew for an incredible season! And one of the best season finales I've watched in a long time! It really was beautiful, and took me back to the roots of the show.
Other top performances: Rosemary was wonderful, as was Minnie and Joseph (as usual). Lee and Bill were also stellar. Fiona and Lucas were outstanding too! And yes, we just love Mike and Mei - they are adorable! Thank you Ben and Amanda for making awkward so sweet!
Erin Krakow was also wonderful in this episode. That scene at Jack's graveside, was just so touching. Thank you for finally giving us this wonderful moment of recognition and honesty!
But, oh, that chemistry between Elizabeth and Nathan, that push and pull, will they or won't they, is just so incredible! I was sad when Elizabeth and Lucas broke up, but this is so much better! Thank you for giving us these beautiful scenes. Erin and Kevin are just so powerful on screen together, and I just can't wait for more.
And please, please, oh please tell me that parting scene (Nathan and Elizabeth riding off side-by-side to save the day) was foreshadowing!! Will that set the stage for Season 11? I just can't wait to find out...Yes, please give us more of that!
When Calls the Heart: Long Time Running (2023)
Metamorphosis complete...in a completely awesome way
Lucas steals the show! But what did you expect? The word "metamorphosis" was written on the blackboard in the school house a few episodes ago...foreshadowing, anyone? He has grown into himself these last few episodes, and I am just loving it. Yes, he is meant for a bigger stage, yes he is a hero of a sort, and yes, set him free from his cocoon, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth and Lucas don't seem to agree anymore, while she and Nathan agree without even meaning to. These two are so in sync we are hardly breathing. Elizabeth is apprehensive about being a governor's wife, but Nathan SEES her, notices, and tracks her down. Wow. That scene in the school house. Nathan gets my first mention, for Quote of the Episode (there will be several, sorry, can't help myself): "What do you want?" Everything about this moment is so wonderfully delivered. Their faces, the breathing, the swallowing, the blinking. Every nuance adds power and we can't get enough of these two. Just. Wow.
Okay, a few more Quotes of the Episode (throwback edition): First, Nathan's "That's not all that matters" - a throwback to his "You matter to me" in Season 7? I think so...great job, writers, on bringing that one back and offering us this beautiful parallel.
(Honorable mention here to Minnie's words to Lucas, just because she uses that same word: "You care and that matters." That whole scene with the Canfields and Lucas was just wonderful. Hope Valley at its best, the support and love. So good!)
Next one: Lucas' "to write from the heart", was that a throwback to Nathan's question to Elizabeth by the pond, "what's in your heart?" the phrase that inspired her book, helped her look in her heart, and pull out what she needed to put pen to paper? I think so. Once again, thanks writers, for that parallel too.
Okay a few "tissues needed" moments: Emily and Elizabeth in the school house (that card and the nod to the first one she gave years ago. Hello.) Henry holding Goldie and singing (godfather, anyone?). And my new favorite side coupling, which I'm going to dub "M&M" - i.e. Mike and Mei - just love them together, and Mike's "it's a date.?!" was just so cute.
W. O. W. That tearful scene with Elizabeth and Rosemary. So real and honest, and the most truth we've seen from Elizabeth in 4 seasons. Erin Krakow and Pascale Hutton just nailed that scene, thank you!
Now, back to Lucas. Wow, Lucas, that speech about making a difference. Such a beautiful, incredible redemption arc for him, one that we can get behind. Writers, thank you for finally doing it "onscreen", and for showing us, instead of telling.
The poor guy, he tried to give Elizabeth an out so many times. Why did she insist to accompany him on the campaign trail in the first place? Though, it did eventually make her face the truth. But, wow, my heart hurt for Lucas. He has been so patient this season, picked up her slack, put up with her uncertainty and her dragging her feet. But wow, that scene in the train station. Erin Krakow and Chris McNally were perfection. The depth of emotion was so touching - we felt their paths diverge, the reality of it - but it was so beautiful at the same time. So well done. And yes, a wonderful speech from Elizabeth finally being honest with him too - if he didn't do this he would always regret it, and yes, he is bound for a bigger stage. He can make a greater impact this way, everything he just professed when he gave his speech. She was, in a way, setting him free. The butterfly out of the cocoon, metamorphosis complete. Thank you writers, this was so poignant, so well done.
I have to say, the writers and new show runner, actors, cast and crew, are just delivering so beautifully this season. We got our Hope Valley back. And no matter what happens next episode, it has been such a beautiful journey, that I can only be grateful. Thank you all!
When Calls the Heart: All Dressed Up (2023)
Be safe...Yes, the real Hope Valley is back!
Wow, so much about this episode that was just...good. The real Hope Valley is back, and wow, I am ecstatic. I enjoyed every minute, even more than I thought I would. Reminiscent of early seasons, but even better. Kudos to the new Show Runner, Lindsay Sturman, and the writers for bringing back the heart and the hope to Hope Valley.
Okay, a few highlights: I liked seeing Lucas and Nathan work together. (But did Elizabeth look worried when they said that Nathan would be at the Governor's side?). Mei and Mike Hickam are adorable together - give us more, please. Rosemary and Lee are once again "couples goals", thank you for that!
Dear costuming: Just have to give you a well-deserved shout out. All the dresses were amazing. (Special mentions to Fiona, Minnie, Elizabeth, and Florence, Just. Wow!) And the way Elizabeth loans out so many, like a "remembrance" of sweet moments in the show, over the years, when she wore them. Such a great idea, thank you, wardrobe!
Great medal ceremony, thank you for finally giving some recognition to our selfless, humble, noble Mountie. I loved the way Elizabeth sought him out before hand, saw him and his little struggle, and offered such great advice. And then she's the friendly face he seeks out, once he's up there on stage. Wow, so poignant! He speaks right to her. How did she stay on her feet? Lol. And, what a speech it was. So touching and just right, so Nathan. Loved every word.
Quote of the Episode: Elizabeth's "Be safe". Just one question: is "be safe" the new "I'm in love with you"? Because she totally is. Will she realize it?
Yes, the wrong dress is definitely a sign that something is not right with this upcoming wedding. Yes. She made the wrong choice. Will she realize in time?
And wow, that moment when Nathan sees her in said "wrong dress". He doesn't even care that she looks like a "meringue". Lol. Oh, that a man would look at me like that.
Chris McNally was incredible this episode. I didn't believe for a minute that Lucas was teaming up with the governor, I knew he was playing them, even if he is a great bluffer. But, the writers have given us enough of a redemptive arc for him this season (one that makes sense and happens onscreen) that we know he is now one of the "good guys". (Thank you, writers, for that! Finally! You have shown us that he is a good guy instead of just telling us.) He has become the "hero behind the scenes" that we can get behind. And wow, that speech. So courageous and just selfless. I hope he gets the recognition he deserves for putting himself out there, on the front line of this fight, and standing up for what's right.
Even if I still don't think Lucas and Elizabeth belong together, I am truly coming to appreciate Lucas as a character, and I can't wait to see what's next for him. It's evident that this couple's paths are diverging, but I am totally onboard for that "larger stage" for him!
When Calls the Heart: Deep Water (2023)
Once again, Community at its best.
This is why we love Hope Valley. They work together, pull together, and get it done. Hope Valley back to its roots, and heart - Allie, Angela, and Mei getting the song done, Henry and kids rescue the stage, Lucas and Mike on the dinner/ball, Elizabeth on the attire, Florence on the decor, Fiona on anything radio related. What could go wrong when this group bans together?
Did I mention Fiona was top notch this episode? Kudos to Kayla Wallace who just keeps getting better and better. And I'm so thankful that Mike Hickam finally has a storyline that fits. Yay!
Oh, and yes, I noticed that Elizabeth took notice of Nathan and Allie and Little Jack playing together. Nathan has completely grown into himself, is comfortable in his own skin now, at home in Hope Valley, and she sees it. Sees him. And when she talks about Nathan (with Rosemary) why does she twist that ring on her finger? Is she feeling the way it doesn't quite "fit" anymore? I think so...
I enjoyed Lucas and the way he "read" Elizabeth's "tells". I almost feel sorry for him, because he is always there to do whatever she needs, pick up her slack. But even if he's doing everything he can to be what (she thinks) she wants, I'm still not sure this wedding is ever going to happen. (Which is just fine by me. I prefer Lucas on his own).
Quote of the Episode (there are two and both from Lee, oh, how I love him): "You were just being my Rosie, that's all." Yes, yes, she was just being Rosie. And we love her, don't we? And: "And there is nothing that you cannot do, when you put your mind to it." Beautiful, classic Lee and Rosie, and this is why we love the Coulters. They are couples goals! Thank you for bringing back the true "Lee and Rosie".
And wow, excellent, excellent work by Erin Krakow. We felt her fear and her panic, right along with her- every. Single. Heartbeat - when she thought Nathan was hurt. Elizabeth is growing as a person, and learning to overcome her fears, and she will become stronger because of it. Thank you for giving this storyline another look - I always thought her "grieving" was done too quickly and not quite deep enough, and I have greatly greatly appreciated the nods to Jack this season - the Mountie hat, L Jack's questions, the visit to Jack's gravesite, her conversation there. Thank you, thank you for making it "real". We faithful long-term viewers appreciate it.
And I loved Henry's involvement in her scenes. Who better to confront her than someone who actually knew Jack, and also, has been through his own difficult issues, including the reluctance to forgive himself and move on? His gentle way of questioning her was so sweet, and he's definitely figured it out. Now, will she?
When Calls the Heart: What Is and What Should Never Be (2023)
Getting better and better
I have to say, this season just gets better and better. Plus, the writers found their way back to the sense of community. Yes! And thank you!
Wow. Kevin and Jaeda were just so good this episode - their portrayal of Nathan and Allie was stellar. The babysitting, Allie losing little Jack, but then immediately summoning Nathan. Then Nathan coming to her rescue, figuring it out, but then supporting her, was just lovely.
Bonus: Nathan, Allie, and little Jack looked like a family. Which made us ask why Nathan and Elizabeth aren't together?
And then, the scene between Nathan and Elizabeth, over apple juice. Wow. Nathan just wrecked us - Kevin's portrayal of deep, deep emotions just comes right across and touches us. He has a gift. Really.
And Elizabeth averting her eyes belies her feelings. What is going on? She acts positively smitten! Yay!
Nathan gets Quote of the Episode: "You know I don't think I'm very good at this thing. Maybe I'm not meant to be that kind of guy." You are right, Nathan. You aren't meant to be the guy married to the wrong woman. You aren't meant to be with anyone else - no one but Elizabeth for you. Maybe that's why it's not fitting...
Let's just hope that's where the writers are going with this, because we are totally "in"! These two just light up the screen and we can. Not. Wait.
When Calls the Heart: Best Laid Plans (2023)
Breaking our hearts...
Wow, Nathan. You really know how to break our hearts. But finally, finally an honest conversation out of Faith Carter. She's been avoiding, allusive, and weird all season - but finally found something honest to say. Sad, though, that Nathan gets brushed off once again, and we still don't understand or know exactly what happened (too much took place off screen). We can only hope that the "thing in the way" is a certain school teacher, because their scenes together are still the most fiery ones to date.
Quote of the episode goes to Nathan: "I don't know what's wrong with me." Well, Nathan, have to be honest - we don't know what's wrong either - especially with the women in Hope Valley. Because let's be honest, if this was real life, you'd have women lined up outside your door, reaching all the way to Buxton, wherever that is.
I liked the radio storyline and the fact that Fiona can still do anything. What's wrong with the men in town too? Because this woman is a superhero...and looks so smart, beautiful, and feisty, while doing it. We like her so much.
Another character we cannot get enough of is Mike Hickam. Give us more Ben Rosenbaum, please! He's everything funny, entertaining, and interesting that we never knew was missing.
When Calls the Heart: The Heart of the Problem (2023)
Grab the tissues
Grab the tissues, because Rosemary just totally wrecked us! Yes, this storyline with Rosemary, of the "motherless mother" was just so, so deep. Wow. The scenes with Faith, the scenes with Elizabeth, the scenes with Lee. Pascale Hutton is just so talented. Thank you so much for your deep, heartfelt, touching rendition of Rosemary. She makes us laugh, she makes us cringe, but she also makes us cry.
And yes, finally, a good storyline for Lee and Rosemary. This pregnant, baby birth, adjusting to parenthood story was just so beautiful and fulfilling for the Coulters. Thank you, thank you, thank you, writers! You are finally using both Pascale and Kavan to their full potential and we are "oh so" here for it.
Also, the scenes with Joseph and Henry, and the community park were just lovely. Thank you for moving Henry's arc to the next level, and thank you even more for using Joseph to do it. We love these two together.
Also, another community dinner? You are truly spoiling us! Because "community" truly is the heart of this show, and we cannot get enough of it!
Also, I do need to comment that I absolutely appreciated the way Nathan put Lucas in his place in regards to the "gambling" references he used to encourage/teach the school children, most notably Allie. Yes, I agree, Lucas has lots to offer, but here has to be a better way to teach conflict resolution and negotiation. I really love the way Nathan aka "Papa Bear" stepped in to take care of his own, and shut that down. The fearless Mountie is also a great father, and stands up for what's right. And we love that about Nathan.
I was a little put off by Elizabeth in that scene, who tried to smooth it over by telling Lucas that "we were just teasing". Uh, no. I'm pretty sure Nathan was not teasing. His life was adversely affected by gambling, so he was dead serious and drawing the line, and we like that about him.
Quote of the episode, I have to give to Lucas, because he's a work in progress, like us all. But, he said it best: "I'm not very good at this "kid" thing." No, no, he's not. But, we are here for his journey. He will get there. And if he doesn't, he would also make a wonderful strong male/bachelor for the kids to look up to.
When Calls the Heart: Life is But a Dream (2023)
The road just got rocky...
First, I have to say I love Bill and Nathan. These two actors, Jack Wagner and Kevin McGarry, are just wonderful together. They make for a "bromance" that is at times father-son, other times friendship, sometimes questionable, but always supportive of one another. The way they "communicate", you know, the conversation that is not really a conversation? Saying something, but really nothing? (Though they get it). So classically Bill/Nathan and I am 100 percent here for it. They crack me up! So fun to watch!
Henry with the kids was a highlight this episode. Love his redemption story (finally it's getting somewhere). Martin Cummins is a wealth of emotion, and he puts it all out there. Yes!
Another friendship that had me this episode was Fiona and Mei. So sweet, and I loved the unconditional support there. Reminded me of the great Fiona/Florence friendship back in the days of the telephone installation (when they exchanged Christmas gifts), a friendship I wish we had seen even more of, though I do love the three ladies trio this season (Faith, Mei, Fiona). After a few seasons of her floundering as if the writers didn't know what to do with her, Fiona is back in full force. Love her spirit, her feisty-ness, and her stand for what is right. She's a force to be reckoned with, let her shine!
Next I would like to mention Lucas and Elizabeth. I have made a valiant effort to like them together, but it still doesn't fit. And this episode just uncovered major problems, in my opinion. His excitement, and the look on his face when he told her he wanted to build her and Jack a house, was just beautiful. But she squashed it. Literally dashes his hopes, illustrating that they are not on the same page. She, sadly, gets my Quote of the Episode: "It would never feel like home." Wow, so a life with Lucas would never feel like home? Oops. Hopefully not what she meant, but I can't help but wonder...
I also don't like that they let a mother with a newborn baby babysit Jack. What on earth? They are the ones that should have taken the newborn so that Lee and Rosemary could have reconnected. Why do they need to "get away" and find time together? Don't they have an endless list of kids that can babysit for them? This was very "bold" and selfish in my opinion, and then when they danced, she didn't look happy. Red flags. Red flags.
But, good thing we have Nathan and Allie, and Joseph and Angela, and that wonderful camping trip, to "save" this episode. Wow, they were all so wonderful. And I loved the advice Nathan gave Joseph. Yes, we must pick what we say no to, in order to focus on where we have said yes. Great job, Nathan. He's really growing this season and stealing our hearts more and more. And Kevin and Jaeda are just so great together. Can we get more, please?
Overall, a good episode. I'm assuming they are making the Lucas/Elizabeth road rocky on purpose, and we are here for what's coming next. Thank you, Hope Valley, for giving us a little drama...
When Calls the Heart: Great Expectataions (2023)
Puts the Unity in Community
Once again the writers have hit it out of the park with Lee and Rosemary's story. Wow. Everything was just wonderful - from their impatience in the "waiting", to their worries, to the actual delivery. Love the way the community comes together to go find Faith and then get Rosemary home. And the candles. And the community support. Wow. This episode was so "Hope Valley".
Kudos to Kavan Smith - Lee's depth and vulnerability was so beautiful. And the way he comes running when Rosie needs him. And the way he foregoes customs and sticks by her. So perfectly written, acted, and played out onscreen. Thank you so much for finally giving these two actors such a deep storyline. And such a beautiful baby! We are all crying tears of joy right now!
Wow, don't trust Madelyn St. John. I'm worried for Bill, thanks for creating some suspense.
Love Joseph this season. His leadership and direction is just lovely. Henry on the other hand, says he's tired, and frankly we are too - tired of watching him suffer. Please let him pick himself up out of the gutter soon. This storyline is also tired.
Not a fan of Lucas this episode. He allows little Jack to skip lunch for ice cream, relegating himself, once again to a "buddy". He's going to have to work on addressing the tough subjects of life (instead of just trying to "smooth" them over) if he's one day going to become a father.
But Hyland (little Jack) was really cute. Great writing in the scene with his mother. At least Elizabeth didn't shy away from addressing the tough subjects, even if she didn't know what to say at first. The Mountie hat was such a beautiful scene. Thank you, writers, for finally mentioning Jack.
Highlight this episode was Nathan. "Nathan to the rescue" has a nice ring to it. Loved the way he was waiting on the bad guy climbing out of the window and saved the day. Then later, as he gets to know more about Harry's situation, he softens. Comes to the rescue again helping the "Harry the bandit" work his way out of trouble with Ned and Florence (love them, by the way. They were so cute trying to "drive home the point"!) But this storyline of second chances was well done, and I loved that it was Nathan who initiated the second chance.
Wish he could get a second chance too...because wow, that scene with Elizabeth just showcased exactly how perfect he and Elizabeth are together. Wow. So beautiful on so, so, so many levels! They sparkle onscreen! Chemistry overload! Literally just sitting on the steps of her house, more than 6 feet apart, has us swooning. They are pure magic!
Why are they not together? We are all scratching our heads and wondering...
He gets my Quote of the Episode: "They'll let you know when they're ready." - Nathan. Such good advice...
Love the way Nathan sees Elizabeth. He notices her. Knows something is bothering her. Asks how she's doing, doesn't take her first reply "I'm fine", but waits for the real answer. And then he offers advice to the best of his ability, from his own experience. This is what we have been waiting for, for so long - someone to notice the wonderful single parent he is. He has so much to offer, thank you writers for finally tapping into his potential. Now, what about their potential as a couple too? Their connection is undeniable and we'd like to see more of it!
When Calls the Heart: Oh, Baby (2023)
The Coulters are back
So thankful to have a good storyline for the Coulters this season. Wow, I've missed them. These two actors are just spectacular together, but in recent seasons, they couldn't get a good storyline. Thank you for giving us so much more! Rosemary is just radiant, and Lee is just so perfect in his "doting". So sweet. They are back!
Not a fan of Faith this season. But Andrea Brooks is a great actress, and she does annoying very well. Let me tell you something, girlfriend: If a handsome Mountie wants to protect you, ride everyday in your wagon, and spend time with you, say Yes! Hello! And wow, was Nathan adorable when he finally did end up in her wagon. How could she ever say no to him? What's wrong with her?
Love Grumpy Bill. Or should I say "poor Bill"? Everyone is invading "his" hot springs, and he just keeps losing his patience. But I am glad to see him healing. He brings so much comedic relief without even meaning to. Jack Wagner is wonderful.
Quote of the episode: "How impressive that your act can even fool Rosemary." LOL. Good "acting" Elizabeth...
Finally, finally, a good storyline with the kids. Like the addition of Jamie, an outsider, giving the kids an opportunity to bring him "into the fold" in true Hope Valley fashion. Thank you for including them and writing them such a sweet storyline!
And Bonus: Allie's costumes this year. Thank you for giving her some pretty dresses. Jaeda Lily Miller is such a talented and beautiful young actress. Thank you for dressing her up! Great job, wardrobe!
When Calls the Heart: Hope Springs (2023)
Slow going in Hope Valley
This episode was slow. Primarily because they are really beating this Henry storyline to death. Don't get me wrong, I love Martin Cummins, he's a fantastic actor, and this new Show Runner hasn't had anything to do with his arc up until now. But please, can we move on from these doldrums and give him something happy for once? I'm quite sure Martin has the acting chops to pull it off.
Jack Wagner was however, the highlight this episode. Loved his scenes as Bill, with both Henry and Elizabeth. Just the right amount of touching and was true to his character. This is why we love having him around!
Still loved the gal trio - Mei, Faith, and Fiona, esp when they "catch" Bill at the hot springs. This was pretty comical, especially Fiona! She brings something so light and fluffy, her comedic side just hits a home run. (Loved the other "gal" trio too- Minnie, Flo, and Mo)...
Kevin McGarry was back, showcasing his comedic chops too. Loved Nathan with scout, the ice cream, and his trouble talking to women. He does these "awkward" scenes so well, they just warm your heart. And he's so expressive with his facial expressions. Says it all! Fantastic actor.
Hyland was adorable, as was Rosemary. Loved the "maybe you need a cookie" bit, which eventually led to good advice - about communicating. Although, I'm worried. Why is a couple that's headed toward marriage still having so much trouble communicating? This is troublesome...unless the writers are doing it on purpose? Setting up a "rocky" path for them?
And while I liked Lucas last episode, I have to say I was disappointed this one. The guy takes one step forward and two steps back. Last episode we liked him, he was bringing the community together, showing substance, a possible redemptive arc, and now this episode, it's back to gambling? Why does he fall into Aunt Agatha's trap (even if she was actually funny)?
Quote of the episode: "He's a lovely match for you, but if there were were ever a man destined for a larger stage..." -Aunt Agatha.
It was nice to see Julie again, and I did like Aunt Agatha overall. She came and shook things up, exposed some issues between the engaged couple. Yes, I think Lucas would fit in Hamilton just fine, but the problem is, Elizabeth no longer does. Are they trying to point out that difference on purpose? And yes, I was glad Aunt Agatha asked the question: is Lucas happy? Will he be in the long run? Because yes, he does seem to like "the bigger stage".
The Nathan and Faith coupling is still awkward. The writers are trying too hard with this one, it's just not natural. In their private conversation, about their supposed "break up", Nathan was so earnest and touched our hearts, but Faith is still Faith - oblivious to what is right in front of her. She just can't seem to get on the same page, another couple who's wires are crossed.
I did enjoy Mike, though, trying to spin the conversation so he can spend time with Faith, but it totally backfired. Ben Rosenbaum is funny, his facial expressions are top notch.
When Calls the Heart: Carpe Diem (2023)
Welcome back, Hope Valley
After the last two seasons of confusion, this was a great start. I liked the opening with Elizabeth journaling, we were reminded right away why we like Hope Valley and would like to live there - that community spirit.
Good things: Lee Coulter is back at the saw mill, hallelujah, finally a storyline for him that makes sense - last season his story was muddled and confused, so it's refreshing to have him back to, well, being himself. And I just love he and Rosemary together- they have their groove back! And it's so wonderful to see her pregnant. She's just glowing and I love that sense of parenthood being a "big adventure". Great job with their arc as a couple- we are so onboard!
Quote of the episode: "Oh, Lee! We are on a big adventure." -Rosemary
Another great thing: Love Joseph and Minnie, he's finally got a decent storyline too, between being Lee's right hand man and the Pastor. Yay.
Also love the "gal" trio: Faith, Fiona, and Mei. I think this is pretty great to have the three single ladies living together and supporting each other as friends. Wonderful girl power, which speaks to all the single ladies out there. Great job on creating this "sista-mance" that's just so beautiful onscreen.
And the biggest highlight for me: Nathan and Allie. Wow, so great to see them back together. They just light up the screen. Loved the teasing interaction when Allie tells him to seize the day. Loved the dancing together as father and daughter. And I really really loved the way she leaned back on him, and he supported her, when Elizabeth read her poem to the community. It was lovely to see them together after so many few moments last season. Thank you for taking their arc to the next level! We are so here for it.
Oh, and how could I forget- Scout! Such a great and funny addition. I just love these humorous moments - Kevin McGarry can pull them off so perfectly! The look on his face when he was handed the leash. Classic Hope Valley moment. And I laughed so hard when Allie came in and "adopted" him. No way Nathan is getting rid of him now lol.
The one lowlight for me is still Lucas and Elizabeth, although I have to be honest, he is growing on me. I do like his effort to help the community. He's showing real growth, which is encouraging. Though, I'm a little worried why they aren't agreeing on the wedding plans.
But, overall, I am pleased with the premier. The writers came out swinging, with great new stories (that actually make sense), and they immediately reminded us why we love Hope Valley. Old characters found their way back to "themselves", and new friendships were made. The community has regained it's place at the "center" (thank you so much for this wonderful community dinner!), and "family" was championed. Welcome back, Hope Valley!
Always Amore (2022)
Surprise, surprise
Okay, so there were quite a few cliches in this movie. And yes, there were a few side actors who didn't do it for me (namely the best friend, who seemed like she was reading from a prompter).
BUT the REAL surprise in this movie was Autumn Reeser and Tyler Hynes. Wow! They both delivered in a very big way - individually and then together. Their chemistry was off the charts, from the very first glance. And yes, there were a lot of glances (that would have come off cliche if there wasn't so much fire packed in there!). You could see their humanity, their real reluctance to believe this could be happening, their resistance to trying something new (namely each other), but there was the undeniable chemistry and pull to each other that really came off.
And, wow, Tyler's speech at the end of the movie. I'll say it again: WOW. He brought it all - the raw emotion, the right calculated words, the surrender of what he felt. It was powerful.
And such a delightful change to find in a Hallmark movie. To see some REALNESS, and a real issue dealt with and overcome, in one of these movies. Their pain was real, the desire to overcome it was real, the hope to move on, but no really knowing how. It was all in there. Again, I'll mention Tyler, I have rewatched that ending scene like 5 times, and it hit homes every time. So so good.
And the kiss! Wow! It had fire. Was not just your typical HM kiss, but it fit the both of them and where they were coming from, and the emotion of when they finally got it right. It was swoon-worthy but with depth!
Highly recommend this movie! And will be watching ANYTHING with Tyler Hynes from now on...
It Was Always You (2021)
Fell flat
I didn't review it the first time around, because I usually like Tyler Hynes, and just didn't want to give him a bad grade. But after the second viewing, I just can't give any higher, and it's all Erin Kraków's fault.
From her terrible bangs to her horrible acting, I just couldn't stand her. She was wooden and without emotion, seemed like going through the motions, reading a script. And then there was her character's flaky, grating personality, I barely made it through. Isn't it her job to make her character likable and relatable? And this gal was neither. I just wanted David to throw up his hands and realize he could do so much better.
And though I love Tyler Hynes, he just stole a girl from his brother. No matter how nice and romantic they make it look. Hallmark, are you that desperate for a storyline?
The Wedding Veil Expectations (2023)
Great movie
What a cool concept, to continue this trilogy, so that viewers get to see what happened after the lead couple's walk down the aisle. I absolutely loved that! Yes, the first movie was great, but for that reason, I thought this one was even better.
Peter and Avery's chemistry has always been fantastic, but the fact that they've now been married a little while, added a sweet depth to their coupling. And it was a joy to watch onscreen!
Real-life problems were confronted and dealt with, including completely relatable marriage issues. Over time, due to bumps in the road, job changes and pressures, and the addition of children, a marriage changes and grows. It's only normal, and this couple portrayed that part so well. Kudos to the actors who made it all feel so real, and relatable. We connected to both Peter and Avery and their challenges, and we rooted for them the entire movie.
And Kudos to Lacey for her hilarious portrayal of the nausea! I nearly laughed outta my seat when Avery's boss kept sticking that coffee in her face. I could totally relate and feel her pain! Great job!
When Calls the Heart: Smoke on the Water (2022)
Can't believe
The writing for this show just goes steadily downhill. Lucas runs like he always does, and people are excited about that storyline? This show isn't family friendly anymore and that labeling should be removed.
Martin Cummins is the best part of this episode. He was wonderful, but that was all the good I can say.
Oh, and Kevin McGarry is the best thing to ever happen to this show. But, he's sidelined and only Elizabeth and Lucas' gopher, propping them up since they can't seem to stand up on their own, which is so ridiculous. This is the leading couple that was chosen?
It's telling how few reviews and the low ratings this show gets now. It's because it's no longer good anymore. Steer clear if you are looking for a story that makes sense, or a leading couple that have any chemistry.
When Calls the Heart: Never Say Never (2022)
Gets more ridiculous
I don't even know what to say. How far this show has fallen from its hay day. It used to be family friendly and hold true to universal truths of right and wrong, and the good guy gets the girl, and other important family values.
Now it's a shadow of its former self, where the writers need to hold an hour long interview after every episode to explain what's even going on.
This episode was lack luster. Can't Rosemary ever catch a break, and have something good to celebrate? And how ridiculous will they let Elizabeth's character get? Do they realize no one even likes her anymore?
It's funny how few reviews this episode has, and the ones that our listed are only those from die-hard Lucas fans that are afraid someone will pull the plug on this train wreck. Please either change the storyline to something interesting (bring back the action Mountie scenes!!!!!!) or let it end.
My Grown-Up Christmas List (2022)
Heartfelt and Genuine
The directing, the storyline, the acting was all stellar in this movie. I was pleasantly surprised! The chemistry between the two leads was just magic - even the proposal by videophone gave me ALL the feels!!!!
Thank you Andrew Cymek for this Christmas gem. Our family will be watching every year, it will be one of our Christmas classics!!!!
When Calls the Heart: Rock, A Bye, Baby (2022)
No the same show anymore
Don't waste your time. The writing hasn't been the same since Season 8. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, it just does. It's sad because the actors are really good.
But please: Pull the plug! This ship has sailed. This show has lost its heart.
When Calls the Heart: Recent Memory (2022)
What happened to this show?
Who can understand anything about what is going on? The oil deal, the coal mine, the foundry? What on earth? I am so confused.
Even Bill's double cross was so confusing. What is happening? Who can follow this? Why were they arresting Wyman before he even showed them the money?
Were the people who gave all these ten ratings even watching the same show?
The only good part was the Mountie action and the rifle flipping! It's seems Kevin McGarry is the only one earning his salary. The rest don't have a single good storyline we can follow.
And Lucabeth is still making us nauseous. What is happening to Hope Valley? Gone is the WCTH we all used to love.
When Calls the Heart: The Kiss (2021)
Elizabeth said, "Show me the Money!"
We would have been better off if she'd married Charles Kensington in Season 2. Then we wouldn't have gotten our hopes up that she could discern a smooth talking charmer, from a man of character.
Well, I guess the heart wants what the heart wants. And her heart wants money and a superficial relationship, with zero chemistry. Well, she can have it! Good luck Elizabeth!
When Calls the Heart: Hope Valley Days: Part 2 (2022)
Still lacking
Thank you to IMDB for allowing us a platform to express our opinions, each person has an different opinion and the right to express it. Thank you for allowing it, even the opinions of fans who don't agree with all the unrealistic 10s that seem so over the top, about this show. Thank you IMDB for giving everyone, including faithful fans/hearties that are disappointed in the show, a voice. It is much appreciated.
In my opinion, this was the best episode so far in S9. Because of a few outstanding characters, and not the writing. The writing is still horribly lacking, those episode was better.
Nathan was exceptional, Kevin McGarry's acting chops are off the hook. His face alone, his expressions, his eyes, convey so much. From confusion, to taking a stand, to helping a friend, then helping another friend, to receiving a thank you. We. Felt. It. All.
Bill was so funny, and Jack Wagner exceptional this episode. I laughed out loud for the first time this season, when he was slurring in the jail. He killed it. And the Christmas tree at the end was just "like" him. It was so nice to see everyone gathered there. A touching moment reminiscent of the good ole days, when the show was heartwarming at every turn.
Basically, the jail is where it's at. The best scenes of this episode happened in the jail! Bill, Mei, Nathan, they were all great. And loved Nathan taking care of Bill, and Mei, for that matter. And her thank you was so wonderful. I think, in that moment, he was proud to be a Mountie. In fact, knowing Nathan, it's probably the little victories like these, that inspired him to become a Mountie in the first place. Finally a little joy for the guy whose been the punching bag since S8E2. He deserved to smile, and we loved seeing that smile. Finally.
Jaeda Lily Miller was wonderful as usual as Allie. Can't say enough good things about her acting chops. And she's so grown up and beautiful now. Kudos to costuming, that olive green dress at the end for the photo shoot was just lovely on her.
Erin Krakow plays crazy so well, and in this episode, her character went from manipulative, to pushy, to bossy, from one minute to the next, and then well, as usual, she butted her way into other people's business. But I loved the way Nathan stood his ground with her and shut her down this time, when she came hunting for him. He had his boundary in place, though she plowed through it, as usual, but he held his ground and told her not to worry about him. Don't know why she can't seem to leave him alone.
I normally don't like Lucas, but I respected him this episode for standing up to crazy pants Elizabeth, for once. (about what Nathan had confided in him.) However, I felt sorry for him when she was manipulative and weird with her marriage talk, later on, with Nathan, right in front of him. He really should run for the hills. But Chris did a good job looking awkward and really made us feel how weird the whole thing was. I thought for a minute I was in the twilight zone, but then remembered, it's season 9.
Minnie, Joseph, and Mr Fuzzy the squirrel were a cute and funny storyline. I love them. They put the warm in heartwarming, or what's left of it, in this show. And I loved Joseph's message at church. Bravo!
And Rosemary and Lee were lovely, though they still don't seem to have anything to do. Can they get a storyline, please? So much potential wasted, though do shine in what they are given.
It's sad that Kevin McGarry and Erin Krakow still have more chemistry with one "Hi" in the street between Nathan and Elizabeth, than E and L have with that ridiculous over the top kiss, in the beginning of the episode. It was especially over the top because she tried to manipulate him, and chide him first, for not telling her something that was confided to him in confidence. Tried to boss him around, for next time. Glad he didn't budge even if she did turn around and make it look like he did.
Bottom line, Nathan/ Kevin was strong, intuitive, intelligent, hilarious, and saved the day. In fact, he stole the entire episode.
One last beef: at the end of the day, why is Nathan once again, helping Lucabeth figure out what love is? With his cute but touching quote, about love, from the window? Why is he involved at all? It's like they don't know how to have a relationship without him. Nathan was amazing, was funny, and took himself out of the equation, but it's awkward! Do the writers really have nothing left to write for Lucabeth?
Hope it will keep improving and that Elizabeth gets some kind of redemption arc soon. For Lucas' sake!
When Calls the Heart: In Like a Lion (2022)
Thank you IMDB
I would like to preface my review with a Thank You to IMDB for letting us voice our opinions. For giving us a platform where we can express our disappointment in this show. In fact, my reviews keep getting deleted by others who would like to silence my voice, who don't want everyone to have the opportunity to tell the truth, but I commend IMDB for allowing everyone to express their opinions, whether positive or negative, when it comes to When Calls the Heart.
Now to my review. I watched this show from S1E1, and loved it up until S8. Then new writers took over and completely ruined this show. Now I don't even recognize the heroine, she's no longer a role model or anyone to look up to.
The love story between Jack and Elizabeth was beautiful, and he left the show in S5. But then entered the new Mountie, who was ten times more interesting than Jack. And the love story they told between Elizabeth and Nathan was just beautiful in S6 and S7. Yes he had a secret and was reserved, but Elizabeth was a woman (by her own confession) who looked at the heart and didn't care about expensive gifts. He saw that and knew that about her, and it was evident that it was Nathan that truly knew her and loved her.
But she devastated 70% of the audience when she picked shady, smooth-talking, gambling saloon owner Lucas (The exec Producer gave that percentage on twitter, it didn't come from me), and the audience lost interest and respect for her, as a character. When she picked Lucas over Nathan, it went against all of the preciously held values and the very premise of the show. Since the beginning of S8, Elizabeth is no longer likable nor even recognizable.
I won't watch any further because Lucas and Elizabeth are not believable together as a couple, and they have zero chemistry onscreen. In fact, Chris McNally admitted in an interview that he and Erin failed their chemistry read through test together. Further evidence that he was never meant to be her final choice (because what director in their right mind would cast him in that "endgame" role if they had zero chemistry from day one?) Anyway, as nice as he can be, and as much as they try to whitewash Lucas' character, that lack of chemistry transfers onscreen and makes it cringeworthy to watch.
Elizabeth and Nathan still have more chemistry sitting across the table from each other for 2 seconds, than Lucas and E ever had. I don't know how they are going to turn it off for season 9! Good luck!
But after that horrible, disjointed premiere, I won't be watching. It's evident the writers are still oblivious to their own horrible writing . If you like a good love story, this ain't it! Only angst and heart break and terrible lessons. Steer clear!
When Calls the Heart: Out Like a Lamb (2022)
Be careful
Do the writers know nothing about Canada in 1919? There was prohibition and gambling was illegal. So Lucas would have been in jail, and Elizabeth fired for even talking to him.
Did she forget how shocked she was to hold school in a saloon in the early seasons? And now she's hanging out in one? This is so unrealistic. What are the writers trying to do to this show?
Plus, all the chemistry is with the Mountie and she has zero with the gambler. Why is she even with him? Because of the expensive gifts and grand gestures? I thought the whole premise of the show was the teacher and the Mountie. And didn't she profess over and over in the early seasons that it wasn't the price of the gifts that mattered, but that they came from the heart? Did the writers change and not even watch the early seasons of this show?
How is this show still on the air?
There are too many good things on TV now than this dribble.
When Calls the Heart: Journey into the Light (2022)
Have to be honest
This was better than previous weeks. But as long as the gambler is with the teacher, I can't give more than a 1. It's not a good storyline and not historically accurate. He can't cash out someone's chips in his casino one episode and then babysit a little boy the next. In 1919 this would have never been allowed, for a teacher. She would have been fired.
The Mountie on the swing with his daughter was wonderful. And yes, please shave. And when she called him Dad, all the feels.
Loved the Canfields with the guy from the school board. This was a good storyline and made me miss the old wcth. Just wish they would have gone deeper here. They only scratched the surface. I wanted to see the dinner and some wisdom from Joseph, the pastor. Surely there could have been more.
The whole episode could have been about them, and then the scene with Nathan and Allie, and I would have given it a 10.
Sad the storyline for Lee and Rosemary. This should have been longer and given more depth as well. And, no one believes that he would ever cheat on her. There should have been another reason for their tension. I know that you wanted to get to the chair and the poem, and we loved that part. But the cheating thing was sloppy, maybe should have just stick to the getting tired of each other, or the previous idea that they were spending too much time together. That we could have believed.
Still don't like E and L. No chemistry and no depth. Please stop trying so hard. They are not palatable any way you serve it up. In their case: less kissing is more. Because we still cringe every single time.
