My Village People (2021)
First 20 minutes was pretty good
Didn't expect much, and not generally a fan of comedy, but was pleasantly surprised by the witty dialogue and comedic timing in the first 20 mins. Once they introduced the character played by Sophie Alakija (Ame, I believe), the storyline becomes silly and somewhat confusing), the acting becomes woody, and the dialogue becomes stale. Granted, the girls' makeup and outfits get more polished, but the dialogue between the two main female characters slopes downhill - leave him alone, he is mine, no he is mine, you leave him alone, and on and on. Very interesting concept that could've been a much better movie with more help in the creativity and writing department.
Sijipeuseu: The Myth (2021)
Soooooooo much potential
Original idea. Liked the new age tech plus sci-fi premise, but the director ruined it with the unnecessarily long and overacted drama scenes. We get it. The extensive or unrealistic drag ons didn't add dramatic flair. Not sure if the reason was lazy writing, or director didn't know the value of the show's originality - the show was already intriguing in its own right, so there was no need to add yeast, stupidity (i.e. Bad-ass assassin suddenly unable to shoot protagonists). This show could've been an 8 or 9, but there were too many of these frustrating scenes to take it seriously. I think my review is descriptive enough IMDB. I appreciate you'll weeding out the unhelpful reviews. But consider requiring 600 characters for reviews with spoilers only. 400 to 500 for reviews without spoilers. Add add a counter bar so we know how many more characters to go.
The Gray Man (2022)
Just what the doctor ordered.
Lulls you in slowly with good pacing b4 they ramp it up. Gosling really showed out! Good action sequences and witty dialogue. Granted, Evan's character was a bit over the top esp. W/the ridiculous mustache. As was the tall good looking actor who played Carmichael. But they don't distract from 2 hrs of action goodness!
Virgin River (2019)
Good and Bad - Easy way to pass the time.
A feel-good show about community, relationships, and personal growth w/both likeable and unbearable characters. They weave occassional storylines about important social or medical issues, which is responsible programming that I like. It's not perfect, but it's heart is in the right place.
Resident Evil (2022)
I'm actually enjoying it.
Let's be honest, the original REs aren't rated very high, but we watch it anyway because we love sci-fi, zombies, and action.
The Netflix remake is fresh for today's viewers and gives an origin story, hence the low reviews about bratty teens etc. I'm starting ep 6 as I write this review and each episode so far has had 50%+/- flashbacks, but don't be deterred. Press on through the bad teenage attitudes and kamikaze behavior (their characters are intentionally written that way and you'll see why later if you hang in there), and you may be pleasantly surprised.
Resort to Love (2021)
Love Christina Milan, but this wasn't very good.
Christina Milan is such a gorgeous woman, we all look forward to seeing her on screen. This movie has a slow start with a few funny moments, but the writing is weak and the singing too drawn out. Can fast fwd through several scenes and not miss anything important.
Clean (2021)
I like Adrien Brody
I like AB. But this movie was undeveloped, incoherent, and he was hard to understand in some parts w/the muffled gruffy-sounding voice. None of the supporting cast was memorable, and the storyline was...pointless.
Cool soundtrack though.
The Lincoln Lawyer (2022)
It's pretty good!
Love the casting, pacing, and the lead actor's accent. I too was reluctant to give this show a chance b/c, of course, Lincoln Lawyer = Matthew McConaughey...not some new guy with dark hair. But the show is top-notch entertaining, keeps your attention, and has both moments of intensity and feel-good charm.
Fauda (2015)
Shaky camera-work makes you dizzy
Good pacing and seems like an interesting storyline. Unfortunately, the shaky and swirling camera movements were overboard and unbearable. Had dizzy spells watching 1st episode after wedding celebration, and had to stop watching.
Young Wallander (2020)
Unnecessarily slow and forced
Haven't watched original Wallander or read the book, so went in with a fresh pair of eyes looking for a good crime cop show. This had potential, but the pacing is ridiculously slow to the point of belaboring the storyline. As if it's written for 80 year olds with slow cognition and trying too hard to add tension and dramatic element. It's a cop show, so it's inherently dramatic and tense. Can fast forward 40 secs through several scenes and not miss anything.
Narcos (2015)
Too sensationalized. Watch Patron del Mal
I lived in Medellín, Colombia for a bit and became interested in their history. Happened upon Pablo Escobar: Patron del Mal on Netflix, and I was gripped from start to end. PdM gives a detailed overview of Escobar, from childhood, to his mother's enabling, his relentless womanizing of young girls, and the way he terrorized the country. Surprisingly, it has some humorous parts, but also highlights the suffering of families whose loved ones he assassinated. No gratuitous sex or profanity, just a well-produced timeline of the terror and events because of this insecure megalomaniac lunatic. Watch Patron del Mal to really understand his rise to notoriety, and the gravity of his torment with the people's suffering. The casting is eerily excellent as most main characters look quite like the real people.
The Americanized Netflix version is...how do I say it...Americanized. Made to entertain. Too many unnecessary sex scenes and too much gratuitous cursing that have nothing to do with the storyline. I know it's told from perspective of the DEA agent, but SO much is missing that it sensationalizes Escobar's in a rather disgusting way. Plus, the characters look nothing like the real people.
I5's ok if you enjoyed Narcos. But if you want entertainment, insight, plus immersion into Colombian people's experience, do yourself a favor and watch Patron del Mal.
Spiderhead (2022)
Agree with other reviews- missed potential
Clever premise. Corny, confusing, and aimless execution. Missed opportunity to deliver something worthwhile. Don't waste your precious time. You'll likely regret it.
Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles (2022)
Thoroughly enjoyed Season 1. S2 off to a weak start
NEW REVIEW AFTER WATCHING S2:
Writing/dialogue is stale. Scenes are tedious. Doesn't have the same originality, as if the writers are new or their hearts weren't in it for the love of the project.
OLD REVIEW AFTER WATCHING S1:
I'm not familiar with this character or any previously written books, shows, etc., but I found the show thoroughly entertaining. Engaging w/o being over-the-top, good writing (witty and relevant), w/likeable characters. Hoping for more seasons.
Please Hold (2020)
Scary. Thankfully it's short.
Thought-provoking. Takes the viewer through a roller coaster of emotions ranging from humor to fear to anger. Enjoyable short watch. 10 for Originality.
Svart krabba (2022)
Thoroughly enjoyed!
Noomi Rapace is such a dynamic and believable actress in her roles. The movie was engaging with perfect pacing and intensity for my taste. Clever set of obstacles that the group had to overcome. Love how authentic the physical bruises and sufferings are. Great job makeup department! Would've loved it more as a series with 2 to 3 seasons to explain more about the war (how it got started, what were the conflicts, etc.)
The Equalizer (2021)
Not for everyone
Great to see Queen Latifah and Lorraine Toussaint (Aunt Vi) together on the screen. The show is engaging and light. A feel-good with good action. Some of the acting by newbie guest characters has been subpar, but the positive tradeoff is high visibility for talent that would otherwise not get such a chance. The program can easily be uncomfortable for some viewers as it touches on prejudices against BIPOCs and those same, typically, powerless marginalized underdogs gain some degree of justice and closure in the end.
Uncharted (2022)
Absolutely awful
Was excited to see Holland and Wahlberg together on the big screen. Unfortunately, the writing is weak and juvenile, and the acting flat. Holland put in a little effort, but Wahlberg seems completely disinterested. Treasure hunt movie w/a couple of unexpected twists that couldn't redeem it. The movie was boring.
The Cleaning Lady (2022)
Good start. Slow leak. Left after Ep 3
Clever and interesting premise. Good first episode w/decent pacing and acting, and varying storylines that gel together nicely. Episode 2 starts off strong, but gets silly toward the end. It's like they hired two writers, and one is amateurishly forcing the intensity. Ep 3 feels contrived, and the lead character's hysterical switch is confusing - you're working with gun smugglers and killers. You saw them kill people, why the sudden surprise they're roughing someone up in the kitchen? The son's sickness is overly dragged out, one bad spiral after another just to keep the crisis in play. And the sister-in-law's situation w/her own son is also a bit melodramatic. To round it out, the lead FBI's character has a slimy, desperate, and unlikeable air. Like a former hot guy who doesn't realize he's no longer hot. I tried, but lost interest after the numerous melodramatic twists end of Ep 3.
Good Sam (2022)
Has Great Potential
This is similar to feel-good shows like New Amsterdam and The Rookie. If you like those programs, give this one a chance. First 5 mins of pilot is a bit cheesy, 20 mins in the bickering is a tad annoying, the twist toward the end a bit far-fetched, and the orchestral soundtrack unnecessaryand quirky: but the show has grit, a good message, and will find its footing.
Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022)
Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Very original and etertaining. Writers and animators did an outstanding job on this one! Glad it released to subscribers instead of to theaters. Found myself rewinding several hilarious parts. Particularly loved the detail and nuance added to the dance scene, and Drac and Frank as humans. Great job! 👏🏼
The 355 (2022)
Don't believe the misogynists. This movie was great!
As an action movie buff who disikes gratuitous profanity, it's hard to find movies to satisfy both requirements. This was it! Great action start to finish, and spot-on acting with a couple of twists that even tugged at your emotions... if you have a heart that is! Plus, no unnecessary F bomb's. Saw it with my adult son, and we're both waiting for the sequel. Fan Bingbing was flawless. Go Ms. Bingbing!
True Story (2021)
Better after Ep 1
Not a fan of Hart or Snipes, but found it entertaining enough to binge watch to the end. Ending obvious from onset, with a few good diverting twists. First episode was full of over-the-top gratuitous f-bombs, but it balances out and finds itself by episode 3 or 4. Final two episodes were truly enjoyable. Unexpected and memorable finale.
Sex scene in ep 3.
Heels (2021)
Other lower reviews pretty accurate
PROS: Stephen Amell and unique plot angle compared to other current shows.
CONS: Sloooow pacing, weak dialogue, strained southern accents, depressing soundtrack.
The Green Knight (2021)
Bait & Switch
Everything isn't for everyone. Dev Patel and Alicia Vikander are both dynamic actors, but this movie was absolutely terrible. 1hr in and you're still waiting for something, anything to happen. The trailer is misleading. The title is misleading. Movie is more about Dev's journey to the Green Knight. Extremely slow and too atmospheric, w/too many artistic shots. Witchcraft is the backdrop. If you enjoyed Shape of Water, you may enjoy this. Maybe fanboys and fangirls would enjoy or understand better. Walked out after Joel kissed Dev on the mouth.
