Criminal Minds: Nelson's Sparrow (2015)
one last game of chess
Okay now i get why dave rossi had all those wives
this episode was really really remiscent. Im glad we got to have this final moment with gideon to tie the loose things, though it was rather sad. The flashbacks were rlly cute tho the fact young gideon has been played by boy meets world is rlly funny cuz he looks so out of place for a gruesome show. Besides that it was really sweet and in another universe i would hope for a foundations of the bau show with young rossi and young gideon running around crazy and randomly creating terms. The signature was so adorbsies. The lore behind the unsub wasnt as nuanced as theybe been in the past but the lore was so good it gets a 9 star. Rossi was fine as hell damn.
Lady Bird (2017)
coming of age more like i sobbed too many times while watching this movie!
I went into this movie not knowing much other than the cast and that all the girlies on the internet said that this was THE movie. I was expecting a strong plot surrounding the main character. Not really what i got.
I think greta gerwig, and really everyone who worked on this movie, captures the feeling of Existential Dread (AP Lang vocab word!) beautifully in this film. I definetly felt the dread while watching. I initially thought this would be another Manic Pixie Dream Girl story where some quirky girl saves a boy. To be honest everyone in this film needs saving.
There were too many times where I caught myself physically frowning, cringing, or watching with a face of displeasure. Not really at Greta Gerwig, whom of which I know is spectacular, but more so at the plot.
This movie heavily reminds me of Normal People, a book by Sally Rooney. It is really a "blurry" book where it is hard to capture any substantial plot, instead focusing on the coming of age aspect towards the main character(s). This is truly a reflection on real life; I aged with Lady Bird throughout the movie.
But oh my gosh the depiction of womanhood is so beautiful. Everything is so beautiful. I cried at least 3 times throughout the movie. It was just so beautiful. But oh my gosh it also just.. sucks. I feel so at ends with this movie. I understand why it was the hit that it was but it also feels so despicably terrible. It terribly rips me apart with that ending. The plot isnt a mountain its really just a squigly line. I feel so lost throughout the movie because half of it is so predictable and half of it is so... random.
Lady Bird is just so colorful in this world of black and white but I also feel like shes another gray. I felt anger towards her, Timothee Chalamet's character, and everyone in this film. I know it is supposed to have some realism but not to the point where it is painful to watch the movie!
But I still loved it. I still found it a cinematic masterpiece surrounding womanhood and growing up and the need for more while also being nothing. This is a great movie for women made by women. But the flaws had me pushing it from a 9/10 to an 8/10.
Would I recommend it to someone else to watch? Depends. If you love existentialism and living and whatever then yeah this is for you. If you like storylines then no. It hits harder if you are a woman with a mom too.
Extra note: EVERY single character infuriated me. Timothee Chalamet's character was just so stupid. Like genuinly stupid. He was just another man who talks a lot about things he has no clue on how to critically think about (which I know is the point but still!) I found every character annoying except like Miguel Shelly and the dad. Loved the main characters design and the colors of the whole movie it was lowkey aesthetic and pretty and so womanhood !
Criminal Minds: Route 66 (2013)
Really good but could have been better
The concept of fatherhood is persistent throughout the episode, with both Aaron Hotchner and the Unsub ultimately choosing to live for their children. Hotchner meets with his former wife and Foyett in what appears to be an afterlife, and the one word I woudl use to describe it as silly. Foyett and her were enjoying popcorn while giggling at Aaron's current life, meanwhile Aaron is freaking his guts out. When he realizes he can not stay, he gets into a car where a personal driver drives him away- David Rossi. The behavior of the other character's in this afterlife really set the scene for how easy it would be to just live there, but once reminded of Jack, Hotchner dropped everything.
The parallel with the Unsub where he was going to commit suicide just as his father did, but decided not to because of his daughter, showed that he was willing to give up everything, and live a life locked up. He chose to end the cycle. He chose her.
The writing on this episode was spectacular, though I wish there were more focus on the other Agents. Also the time Hotchner spent in the afterlife movie theatre was a bit too long and got boring. Definitely not the best episode out there because of the room for improvement, but it is one of the better ones of Criminal Minds. I cried. Deserves a higher rating to be honest.
