Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Enjoyable enough but pretty shallow
Firstly, Thor: Love and Thunder is a huge step down from Ragnarok. The jokes continued go get sillier to the detriment of the story.
Christian Bale was great as Gorr but was under utilised and felt like he was in the wrong movie. He would have been better served in a 2 hr 20 min deep dive into what it means to be a god and work on a deeper level to challenge thor to think about the duty of the gods to their subjects.
None of the events had any real weight and didn't really linger after the conclusion of the movie.
This was the best use of Jane Foster and her overall arc for the film was well done and there was a better chemistry between Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth this time around.
There were some strong visuals, particularly the sequence drained of colour except for the lightning of the weapons and Gorr's eyes.
Overall the story had potential for something deeper but most of those moments were played for laughs (some of these worked, others did not). This leaves me losing confidence in the MCU going forward with 4/6 phase 4 movies being at best decent.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Good... Not Great
There was a lot to like in this movie, Elizabeth Olsen once again fantastic as Wanda. The Dynamic between Doctor Strange and America Chavez was a surprisingly good aspect.
The tone was probably the strongest aspect of the movie. Definitely the darkest and most violent MCU film with a great tone developed with the horror elements. The usual MCU humour was of course present in this film but not to the extent as most of the previous films which can often feel too forced and break the tension too many times.
This film isn't the next big event film of the MCU like No Way Home or the Avengers films and anticipation on what this movie would contain and set up for the future will likely lead to disappointment for a few people.
Some of the madness was a little too far for my tastes (a particular fight sequence involving musical notes). The best sequence for me is by far the whole Illuminati section with great cameos, action and deaths.
Overall, a solid MCU entry but certainly not in the top 10. A nicely fast paced movie especially after a number of longer blockbusters in the last few months (The Batman, No Way Home, Eternals, Dune etc. All with runtimes of around 2 and a half hours and over). A bit of an unfocused story and not exactly ground breaking visual effects. Still an enjoyable time
7/10.
Line of Duty: Episode #6.7 (2021)
Don't see what all the negativity is all about
Sure there wasn't a lot of action in this finale but that isn't always what LOD is about. The reveal of Buckles as the fourth man was surprising and many seem to think of it as disappointing. But to me it is a perfect subversion of expectations and when thinking of it on reflection, it isn't completely out of nowhere and there is reason for this twist. Throughout the whole story, Buckles has been the detective placed in charge of an operation that is currently under investigation by AC-12, in series 1 with Gates, series 4 with Roz and now in series 6 he was the superintendent on the Gail Vella murder. A murder which he was involved in ordering.
Furthermore, the casting of Jimmy Nesbitt as Thurwell, a character we never actually meet in person was another brilliant example of a subversion of viewer expectations.
The ending of this series suggests to me that there will be 7th and possibly final series, no longer focussed on 'H' or the 'fourth man' storyline which has been a focus since the end of series 4, but instead can now turn focus on CC Osborne for his failings and cover-ups going all the way back to the first ever episode.
Overall, I loved this episode and season as a whole and hope for season 7.
